Excerpts from a lecture by Canadian political scientist Arnold August at the weekly Trabajadores

... Venezuela. I'm watching Telesur almost every day,

reading everything, whether it comes from Telesur, Granma, Juventud Rebelde, Trabajadores.

I think that in the analysis of Venezuela,

there's a very important element that's been missing.

I'll explain what I mean with an anecdote.

Yesterday...

My wife couldn't come along on this trip for health reasons.

I spoke with her from Caracas the day before yesterday,

and from Havana last evening, several times.

She's usually a very calm person –

not like her husband, always riled up about politics.

But she was upset.

She was angry about the propaganda against Maduro,

that we read in the Canadian press.

That's pretty well to be expected.

But what really bothered her, she said,

what she really found disturbing —

See, we have a lot of neighbors, friends,

who aren't necessarily revolutionaries or Marxists,

but at least against US foreign policy, progressives.

And every one of these people, without exception,

agrees with the anti-Maduro discourse.

"How can this be?" I asked her.

Because governments like Canada's are supporting Trump's anti-Cuba policy!

Some European countries are supporting Trump's interventionism against Venezuela,

to put a friendlier face on imperial policy.

And the role of a country like Canada --

putting a patina of credibility on Trump's anti-Venezuela policy --

is very important.

But at least one person around here is denouncing this.

When I was in Caracas two days ago,

I spoke in front of a Chavista audience,

denouncing the Government of Canada for its policy

of supporting Trump.

But I wasn't speaking only for myself.

I was speaking for the 3 million trade unionists,

members of one of our national unions.

The union issued a declaration against Trudeau's and Trump's policy,

and in favour of Venezuela's sovereignty.

In favour of Venezuela's right to choose its own path,

and against political or military intervention in that country.

Another union with 380,000 members,

a public-sector union,

also issued a declaration stating, among other things, and I quote,

"We oppose US imperial policy against Latin America."

... the population of Caracas in front of the statue of Simon Bolivar,

yesterday, February 4.

In Canada, there were demonstrations in Vancouver,

which got national TV coverage,

in Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal, my city,

with the thermometer at -20° or -30° and snow falling.

But people were heard chanting in the streets of Montreal,

"Maduro sí, Yankees no!"

I think Cuba needs to know this,

to know that Canadians are fighting against imperial policy.

But how can it be that Trudeau is on Trump's side,

supporting intervention in a country like Venezuela?

Trudeau's current policy is different.

Normally -- well, we're in a different context.

Normally -- and this is a bit of a joke, but --

We usually talk about solidarity with Cuba, that's true.

But in this case I'm asking for Cuba`s solidarity with Canadians...

... in the fight against this policy.

Trudeau's pro-Trump policy.

A policy that could even lead to military intervention.
