Here's The Double-Standard The Left Doesn't Want You To Realize
Liberals have been up in arms lately over the revelation that some immigrant families
are separated at the border when found crossing over illegally.
Despite the fact the children are removed to keep them safe, the Trump administration
is taking a major hit from liberal media sources and protesters alike.
But there's one very real double-standard the media doesn't want you to see.
Lost in this debate is any acknowledgment that President Obama's administration also
used detention facilities when illegals were caught crossing the border.
Current U.S. immigration laws entail the temporary separation of families that arrive with children
to different facilities in order to prosecute the adults while keeping the children safe.
The policy of prosecuting immigrants for crossing the border illegally has been in place for
several presidential administrations–including Obama's.
The Obama administration alone prosecuted and captured over half a million illegal immigrants,
all whose children were taken and held separately from their parents.
Personal accounts from immigration lawyers prove that Obama was also concerned with unaccompanied
minors traveling to the border–and wanted to create a deterrent.
So did the Bush administration.
So while the Trump administration is being slammed by critics for its zero-tolerance
policy of separating children from adults who illegally enter the country, this issue
is hardly a new one.
In truth, the Obama administration actually expanded the system of detaining and separating
families–mostly mothers and their minor children–to deter a surge of Central Americans
from crossing the border.
This resulted in many minors being temporarily placed in centers at the time.
Photos similar to ones taken recently were released as a matter of public record and
show similar cramped quarters and hysterical families–but Obama's justification was
that they had no choice but to implement policies intended to deter families from entering the
U.S. illegally – something Trump administration officials have also argued.
The main difference?
President Trump's administration is separating children from their parents who are being
prosecuted criminally for offenses that were once considered civil violations
The children are not being charged, and instead, are being kept safe in the custody of officials
from the Department of Health and Human Services.
Attorney General Jeff Sessions said it best when he spoke at the National Sheriffs'
Association this week, "We do not want to separate parents from their children.
If we build the wall, if we pass legislation to end the lawlessness, we won't face these
terrible choices."
Earlier this year, even the leftist American Civil Liberties Union announced it had obtained
thousands of government documents that had shown evidence of "the pervasive abuse and
neglect of unaccompanied immigrant children detained by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection"
during the Obama presidency from 2009 to 2014.
And while President Trump is acting to keep children from the dangerous action of crossing
the border altogether, former President Obama's plan was to jail these children as a deterrent.
Matthew Kolken, an immigration lawyer, confirmed, "The Obama administration's strategy was
to expedite deportations of refugee children oftentimes without a lawyer, and jail refugee
mothers without children as a deterrent."
The double-standard currently being presented by the media is very real.
While the blame is all being placed on the Trump administration, Obama's actions were
far more derogatory, and other administrations started this issue in the first place.
