If you live in Florida or you're planning to go to Florida, there's a nasty surprise
waiting for you in the water.
The Florida department of health has issued a warning that there is a quote, eruption
of stinging microscopic sea lice, and I'm going to tell you everything you need to know,
here for you on IO.
Welcome back to inform overload I'm Charlotte Dobre.

Right now.
I'll wait.
Alright so…apparently there are tiny flesh eating creatures infesting Florida's coastal
area.
These creatures are nicknamed sea lice, but they aren't lice at all.
They are actually larvae of a type of jellyfish, thimble jellyfish.
The larvae, even though they are small, they shoot out the same cells that jellyfish sting
you with with their tentacles, Nematocysts.
Nematocysts actually have a barbed venomous hook.
The problem is, you can't really see these larvae with the naked eye, so if you're
swimming, you can just end up in a swarm of them out of nowhere.
A single person can be stung more than 100 times after the larvae gets trapped between
skin and bathing suits.
If you come into contact with nematocysts, you'll experience a really, really itchy
rash that should go away eventually, but for the time being, could erupt into painful blusters,
cause nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, muscle spasms, headaches and difficulty sleeping.
The treatment for these stings require you to go to the hospital for antihistamines and
medications.
Oh, and you won't be able to go swimming for at least a week, maybe two.
According to the director of Pensacola beach's public safety, they aren't very intense,
which is why we call them sea lice and not sea hornets or sea wasps.
The national institutes of health recommends applying vinegar to your skin to prevent bites.
Another preventative measure is don't wear huge swim trunks or a one piece.
Those types of bathing suits trap sea lice.
If you have swam in an area affected with sea lice, Once you're out of the water,
take of your bathing suit immediately, and shower with warm water.
Don't shower in a bathing suit that has Ben exposed to sea lice.
If you're wondering if your favorite beach is affected, lifeguards are going to be putting
up purple flags to alert swimmers.
So far, the worst affected beaches are in Pensacola, but its believed this could affect
most of the beaches along the 400 kilometers or 250 miles of Florida's southern coastal
area.
This isn't the first time the coast of Florida has been affected.
There's been records of outbreaks of sea lice for the last 100 years.
They are often found in the warm waters of the Caribbean sea and on the gulf coast during
the summer between April and July.
But for some reason, in the last 4 years, the amount of sea lice has gotten worse.
