Chelsea 0-0 Southampton: Maurizio Sarri's Blues draw a blank at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night - Duration: 5:23.

Chelsea failed to kick-start the New Year on a high after being held to a goalless draw by a stubborn Southampton side at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night.

The Blues dominated possession but only managed to carve out five shots at goal, all of which were kept out by an impressive Angus Gunn in goal for the Saints.

While Chelsea remain in fourth place in the Premier League standings following the 0-0 draw, they only lead Arsenal by three points

For Southampton, though, the point was crucial in their fight against relegation though they drop into 18th place because of Burnley's win away to Huddersfield.

The day started with good news for Chelsea fans after the club announced the signing of winger Christian Pulisic from Borussia Dortmund.

Chelsea revealed the USA international would not be joining the club during this transfer window, rather in the summer, which led to supporters questioning whether the deal was in any way linked to the future of Eden Hazard.

While it is believed that the two are not connected, Chelsea fans had certainly come prepared to show Hazard their love for him as they displayed a huge banner before kick-off against Southampton.

The Belgian started the game brightly from his usual position on the left flank as Alvaro Morata came back into the starting line-up due to the ankle injury to Olivier Giroud.

And the Spaniard, whose own long-term future at Stamford Bridge remains in doubt, had Chelsea's first shot on target when in the 12th minute, he headed Cesar Azpilicueta's cross straight at Angus Gunn.

Despite their precarious position in 17th place, Southampton showed they were not intimidated by Chelsea when Danny Ings drove over the bar four minutes later.

But chances were not forthcoming in a game that lacked pace and energy in the first half

Hazard will certainly feel he should have scored when his powerful effort from close range was only kept out of the back of the net by Gunn's head while Marcos Alonso drove wide in the 42nd minute.

But Sarri would not have been too pleased with the way his side dominated possession but failed to convert it into goalscoring chances.

To add to his woes, Chelsea's winger crisis deepened after Willian picked up a knock in the first half and had to be replaced by Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

The hosts' lack of cutting edge seemed to inject the Saints with confidence after the break as Stuart Armstrong produced a shot that Kepa Arrizabalaga had to save not long before Hazard was again denied by Gunn at the near post.

After Jorginho's tame effort was comfortably claimed by Gunn, Sarri reacted by replacing Ross Barkley with Cesc Fabregas - who nearly made an instant impact when his ball released Morata, though the striker's resulting goal was chalked off for offside.

Morata was again involved as Chelsea launched a counter-attack, powered forward by Loftus-Cheek, but the striker could only drive at Gunn after latching onto the England international's ball.

It was to be the final chance for Chelsea, who saw a late penalty call for a foul on Alonso in the area turned down, as the Blues were left frustrated in their search of their first win of 2019 while the Saints continue fighting against the drop with a much-needed point.
