(Richard) Hello viewers, we are here in
sunny Carlsbad, California, and today we have got an incredible episode for you.
An amazing talent, Kathleen Carrillo. Kathleen,
(Kathleen) Hi. (Richard) Thank you so much for having us in your studio today. (Kathleen) Thank you, thank you for having - for coming.
(Richard) Well, I see, I hear this wonderful outdoor
studio, you are full of nature here, (Kathleen) Yes. (Richard) so what inspired you
to have an outdoor studio? (Kathleen) Well because we have a beautiful yard here and beautiful
bamboo and so I found the perfect spot to put it in. I love nature
I'm inspired by, I have the breezes from the lagoon, and so it makes the perfect space to
create. (Richard) Well wonderful, it's beautiful, it's actually really relaxing
and I'm sure it gives you a tonne of energy (Kathleen) Yes. (Richard) to paint, and paint a painting. (Kathleen) I'm
into Feng shui, so this is like the perfect Feng shui. (Richard) It feels it. So,
I noticed in your bio that you had said your parents are very
creative. I'm sure they were very influential and supportive. (Kathleen) Absolutely, I
had a father who was in the TV industry, and my mum was in the
cartoon industry and so they both were very creative, talented people and so
I was blessed with encouragement. (Richard) It's wonderful to have that
backing - so beautiful. Where did you go to college?
(Kathleen) The University of Oklahoma. I was
raising a family, and going to school and running my business so it took me
seventeen years to get my education. (Richard) Well, marathon not a sprint, right?
(Kathleen) Absolutely. (Richard) Okay, well I'll tell you what, the viewers I'm sure are really anxious
to get at it and I know you are. (Kathleen) Yes. (Richard) So I'm going to get off
stage, give you centre stage (Kathleen) Okay. (Richard) and let you paint away and show us the magic
that comes (Kathleen) Alright. (Kathleen) from inside you. (Kathleen) Thank you so much. (Richard) You're welcome.
(Kathleen) Certainly the paintings that I do I always have a purposefulness
to them, and one of my most closest to my heart
imagery is all about women and the balance of the feminine
principle and the empowerment of women. So I'm constantly doing pieces
about women. And the thing I'm going to work on today will
start out she's a Hawaiian girl, she's holding flowers,
but more importantly it's the way that she looks at us.
She's, its from a collection I do called How Does Your Garden Grow.
And it's the woman and her eyes
is speaking to the audience and the person that's looking at the painting and asking them,
how does your garden grow? Are you living your best life? And so that's
the purposefulness in this work. So
before I get started, I want you to see over here when I work on a painting
I don't work from one single piece.
First of all, I like to do a painting or a face
with a black and white photograph so that I can interpret the way
that I want to, and I can change it and I'm not stuck with trying to
match skin tones, put certain kinds of colours in. That way I
am free to sort of create something that's more my style.
(Richard) That's actually a great little gem for all the viewers out there.
Because they know that they can have several different photos that they can
compile into one composition. (Kathleen) Right. Right here, this is one of the sweet spots I
divide my canvas into thirds in my mind. I don't grid, I never
grid because I'm too... I can change my mind at any
time, but I put her face right in that sweet spot
where those two lines converge. It's either here,
or here, here, or here. So when I
start I've already... this was a canvas I had started and it was
something that I didn't like, but I love painting over other paintings, because it gives me more
texture and I'm no so afraid to
make a mistake. It's easier to wipe out something because the canvas
is already if you will, dirtied up.
I started working on it and then I go in and I do a
line drawing sort of to reference where my face is going to be. Where
the shoulders are going to be. Deciding that I'm going to put a hand in here,
add flowers and then things direct to that face, that focal point.
(Richard) Well I think that's a wonderful suggestion, because a lot of artists
they don't do that prep work before they get into a painting, so this is
wonderful to see. (Kathleen) Yeah, and it's also you're not so afraid to
mess things up, because it's already messed up, you can see that. Alright,
so I'm going to start with behind my figure alright,
and I'm just going to start with a bit of a lighter side now.
And once you can
see I am working with my non-dominate hand, so I'm not as
concerned about finishing as I am about getting
and flushing out the colour on my canvas. (Richard) What mediums are
you using right now? (Kathleen) Acrylic, I always use acrylic. Oh, I start out
with house paint. I start all my canvas with house paint.
Because it's less expensive, and it says if
you're putting gesso, or coloured gesso on your canvas so that
it's not so precious. And then I come back in when I
start to finish up the piece and I add
my Golden Paints, or my Liquitex
any of those. The better
paint. Okay, so this is a water area back in here.
(Richard) Viewers, look at those big, beautiful, bold strokes she's
putting down right now. (Kathleen) Yeah it's... (Richard) Gorgeous. (Kathleen) The
bigger your canvases also the easier
it is to do that, so fun. (Richard) Lots of energy.
(Kathleen) Okay, (Richard) Well that's another great
little tip right there. Instead of throwing the canvases away, just repaint. Paint right over
the top of them. (Kathleen) Absolutely, canvases are way to expensive to throw away right?
(Richard) Yes. (Kathleen) Dark
side of her face, so the shadow side I'm going to work in some of these shadow
colours. (Richard) So do you have colour combination
in mind before you start or you just (Kathleen) No, I'm thinking about (Richard) whatever happens, happens?
(Kathleen) this is high contrast, so I know that I'm going to put yellow
in the skin tones on the highlighted side, so I like to work with the
violets in this instance on the shadow side so a little bit of
red in it.
And with my highlights in here.
You see I'm not worrying too much about following
my lines on my...
(Kathleen) It's already starting to take shape. You've got a light side, shadow side. (Kathleen) Right.
That's my
mouth area right in here.
(Richard) That gives it a nice movement.
Gives it a nice feminine movement. (Kathleen) Oh, yeah.
The angle of the neck yes, I think that its
a really beautiful curve.
(Kathleen) It's just
layering over and over. Sometimes I'll work a bit of peaches into it,
the more yellows, the yellows are really strong beautiful lights. When I go to my bedroom
of paints, I will start to using Lemon Yellow in these
shades, because Lemon Yellow is just... makes the skin tone
glow. There's bit of highlight right on the tip of her nose here,
the bulbous part of her nose here.
(Richard) It already has a nice glow to it. (Kathleen) Yeah, it's starting to flush out
and you notice how there is that dragging dry brush
look on the canvas. It really helps to you can see another colour
through it. So sometimes it's good not to cover your
full canvas. I'm now going to do a bit of drawing
because I'm going into these smaller areas here.
Get some colour in those eyes and then work some
dark around the outside of it. And usually when I start to
go down to the real small details, I
will go into my better paint, but I still want to be able to have her looking at me.
Maybe even a
bit of highlight where the sunlight's hitting the eyes.
(Kathleen) The tiniest slightest
angle can change the expression on an eye.
Actually I want a little more of a laugh to it.
So I'm going to highlight up a little more.
(Kathleen) So here she
is, close to being finished. I've put
all the, a lot of details in, she's become very Polynesian looking,
and you can see she's got her
flower bouquet and you can see the
Bird of Paradise and I've added some jewels and of course we've put the
very Hawaiian, it's not the lei, but it's another very special
kind of neck piece that I believe is a wedding ceremony neck piece.
So she's got that sense of in her eyes
a sense of contentment I feel like, but yet empowered - you can see the smiling in her eyes,
but not necessarily in her mouth.
(Kathleen) Well Kathleen, it's been a fantastic episode. I love the energy
in your paintings. (Kathleen) Thank you. (Richard) You are an amazing artist we just enjoyed our day
so much here. (Kathleen) Thank you. (Richard) You have this series of collections
that are stunning, and you also offer giclees. (Kathleen) I do.
I have over a hundred images available in print. (Richard) Wow.
(Kathleen) Either a hand embellished, which I go in and actually hand paint on each one of them.
And they are signed and numbered limited editions. Or I have available
open edition prints that are in smaller sizes. (Richard) Wow, wow, so many choices of
(Kathleen) Yes. (Richard) gorgeous work. (Kathleen) Thank you. (Richard) How about your gallery? You have a gallery
and your website, give us that so clients can commission you? (Kathleen) I have
a Gallery in Puerto, Mexico, and
I just signed a lease to open another gallery
here in Carlsbad, California. (Richard) Congratulations. (Kathleen) So I am very excited about
being in both places. It will be a challenge but we'll work it out. (Richard) You're
an artist - there's always a challenge. (Kathleen) Yeah. (Richard) Once again, thank you for having us here for
this section of your show. (Kathleen) Right. (Richard) We are about to get on a
plane and go to Puerto, (Kathleen) Oh, yeah. (Richard) and film your
Gallery down there, talk a little more about Kathleen's artwork which is
just stunning. So we will get back to you
when we get down there. (Kathleen) Yes, and it will be during an art walk
as well, so maybe we'll take a little tour down the street as well,
and we'll have people coming into the gallery for the South Side Shuffle. (Richard) Wonderful.
(Richard) Hello viewers, the magic of
Hollywood, we are here in gorgeous, sunny, beautiful
Puerto Vallarta at a fantastic gallery of Kathleen
Carrillo's. Kathleen, (Kathleen) Hi. (Richard) thank you so much for having us. (Kathleen) Yes, it's a pleasure.
I'm so happy you came to see the gallery and Puerto.
(Richard) Well, it's been fantastic so far. So the whole
series that you have here, I see a lot of gorgeous paintings,
but I'm really struck by the jungle series you have. (Kathleen) Yeah,
I was influenced by living in the
jungle. I built an artists retreat centre there on the river. And
you would sit on the balconies and at tree level and
you would see these exquisite tropical birds. And so it gave me this
inspiration for a series about the jungle spirits and the symbiotic
relationship between those birds and being in nature and how important
it is. Well they are absolutely gorgeous, the bold, beautiful colours. The
strokes, you're so a courageous painter; you are such an inspiration.
(Kathleen) Thank you so much. (Richard) So we are looking forward to filming the rest of
the gallery here and showing the whole day, but before we do that,
talk about your lifestyle here? (Kathleen) Well I spend
the season here which is from November through April. And
because it's too hot in the summer time, I'm in California. I
have another gallery there. Here, I have an apartment right upstairs
(Richard) How wonderful. (Kathleen) Which is very good for an artist, because sometimes you have the inspiration
at three o'clock in the morning and (Richard) Yes. (Kathleen) you come down and want to work. So I have my studio
here, my apartment and the gallery as well. (Richard) Oh, wonderful, that's
a great life, and we all would love to sign up to that life I know.
(Kathleen) Yeah. (Richard) Well thank you so much, and lets walk around. Lets take a look
at what else you have to offer here. It's an incredible gallery so
if you're in Puerto Vallarta, come and visit, come and visit this is
phenomenal artwork.
(Richard) I noticed you had a fantastic opening last night
for your Friday night art walk. When is it? How is it? Tell
us a little about that? (Kathleen) Well I've always been in a community where there was a great art walk
once a month. Here in Puerto Vallarta, we have one every other Friday during
the season. Last night was the premier
of walk, the South Side Shuffle, and we had
a gang buster crowd. A lot of people were excited to see what new things
I was doing. And had a couple of sales last night. We had a woman who came
in that I am working on How Does Your Garden Grow of
her specifically, and she was so excited and when she got here, she was just wowed
by the image so that was exciting. (Richard) Well the energy in the galley was fantastic.
(Kathleen) Yeah, there was a lot of great people in there and it was nice to see,
because last year we had a difficult time because a lot of construction here. So
a lot of people have come back in and they're very excited about what they've seen.
(Richard) Well, wonderful. (Kathleen) It pleases me.
(Kathleen) We have eight collections that I'm working on all the time. But the most important
collection that I've been working on my whole career is
images about women, and how
you know early on it was about women's liberation, about women in
pathfinding, about women in life accidents, and now the latest
being the How Does Your Garden Grow, is about women
being in their full power, not only in their
strength, but also in their femininity and the balance of the two. And that
it's so important that each of us, even men be in touch with both their
yin and yang, their masculine and their feminine energy. So that is a, that's my
passion; my passion series, the series that's most important to me.
Because I think that the feminine energy needs to come
forth in all areas of the human experience.
And that softness, together with that strength
to create a better world, and I think it's really important. (Richard) So that is an underlying
(Kathleen) That's the theme under that clutch (Richard) theme under all of your paintings.
(Kathleen) Yes, basically, basically, and sense of joy.
You know, my Architectural Whimsy Collection is from my
travels, you know, when I go and travel and look at these amazing
places. I love interpreting them not by the way that
they look, but by the way that they make you feel. So when you see
those whimsical buildings, those whimsical buildings are like people
speaking to one another, dancing. The joy that I receive when I
travel is that I think in some ways the sense everybody that comes up
to that painting if they've visited that place they can relate to that, so that's what
the... (Richard) Your buildings have a lot of energy, they look like they're moving, they have personality
to them. (Kathleen) They're dancing. (Richard) They're not just stagnate. (Kathleen) Yeah, yeah. (Richard) Here we are in the
gorgeous studio of Kathleen Carrillo. Kathleen,
(Kathleen) Thank you. (Richard) tell us a little about this peaceful, inspirational
studio you have here? (Kathleen) The studio is fabulous, it's just behind the gallery
and of course I live upstairs so it's perfect for when I want
to get down here and get ready for one of my workshops. (Richard) Yes.
(Kathleen) I teach six one-day workshops during the season here,
which is between November and April and they're full days -
ten to five. And by the end of the day each of the students takes
home a beautiful painting that's painterly, colourful, bold and they've
learned something, yeah. (Richard) That's wonderful.That's wonderful because your style, your technique is so powerful.
I love your bold, beautiful strokes, your colour,
you're actually amazing with colour harmony. (Kathleen) Thank you.
(Richard) It's just stunning to look at. So not only the classes,
but you also give outside workshops. (Kathleen) I do, I did
take groups to Europe this year we went to Italy,
for one week-long workshop. The
students finished two paintings, and we do some
exploring, and we do some learning how to photograph to do good compositions. (Richard) Oh,
beautiful. (Kathleen) Yeah, and then this next year in June, I'm going to be going to France.
One week in week in Sarlat, and one week in Aix-en-Provence. So
it'll be a wonderful experience for those of you who would like to paint
on location (Richard) Yes. (Kathleen) and go
to an inspired place. (Richard) I was going to say that trip has to be phenomenal. (Kathleen) It's fabulous.
(Richard) Beautiful, beautiful. So with all of the gallery
action that you have here, you have an art walk coming up
I hear. (Kathleen) Yeah, we have art walks every other
Friday night. It's the South Side Shuffle, so when your, if you do
visit Puerto Vallarta, this is the place to come. It's Old Town, it's
fun, it's funky, it's pretty. A lot of galleries really, really a
beautiful place to visit. (Richard) How wonderful. And Carlsbad Gallery?
(Kathleen) Oh, I know, I just opened a brand new gallery in Carlsbad. (Richard) Congratulations.
(Kathleen) Thank you. On the north end of States Street, and the grand opening
will be February the second that's coming up. And
I'm very excited to invite people there to do workshops, and
to come and see my work, (Richard) Wonderful. (Kathleen) and see me panting maybe while
I'm in the gallery. (Richard) Well speaking of paintings, I see behind us here you
have a commission portrait. (Kathleen) Yeah, it's
one of the Garden Girls, but it happens to be
someone who asked to have themselves painted as a Garden Girl,
so that she could have herself empowered in her masculine and feminine energy.
And she's very excited about it, she
may come into this outside chapel tonight and check it out. (Richard) How
wonderful. How do the viewers, and patrons, collectors,
how do they get a hold of you? (Kathleen) Well, I have a website, Kathleen Carrillo galleries
and of course, if you're in Puerto Vallarta, we have gallery in
Old Town. And then in Carlsbad we have the gallery there in
the north end of States Street. (Richard) Wonderful.
