A child who fell into a rhino exhibit has been airlifted to hospital.

The incident happened at Brevard Zoo in Melbourne, Florida, USA.

Brevard County Fire and Rescue [BCFR} said a trauma alert was issued for the boy.

The one-year-old boy was airlifted to Arnold Palmer Hospital for treatment.

His mother was also also injured and taken by ambulance Orlando Regional Medical Center.

It is not known how the boy fell into enclosure or the extent of his injuries.

Officials told Spectrum News the mother was injured trying to rescue her child.

Brevard Zoo said in a statement that the family was taking part in Rhino Encounter, a hands-on educational experience.

The zoo says a series of steel poles separate participants from the rhinos during the experience.

The zoo says the child stumbled and fell in between two of the poles.

"At this point, the snout of at least one of the rhinoceroses made contact with the child," the zoo said in a statement.

The zoo says it is suspending the event and will review procedures.

"Our number one concern is the safety and welfare of our guests and our hearts go out to the family," said zoo executive director Keith Winsten.

BCFR said in a statement: "BCFR responded to the Brevard Zoo today for a child that fell into the Rhino exhibit.

"The child was trauma alerted to a pediatric hospital & mother was ground transported to an Orlando hospital for treatment.

"Further info being referred to zoo officials."
