TRUMP GOES ROGUE ON MUELLER,RESIGNATION ON THE WAY
new reporting Chuck Schumer the leader of the Democrats in the Senate says the headline
we must protect Robert Muller and what about those new leaders in the
house Mike Emanuel with new reporting on that Mike well chef Chuck Schumer's saying that
he finds the timing of all this very suspect he says any attorneyMgeneral
should not be able to interfere with the Robert Muller Russia probe inM any way Schumer was
talking about the
election shakeout the midterm election and was asked about this breaking news was handed
to him here's his reaction from literally moments ago protecting Muller and
his investigation is paramount it would create a constitutional crisis
if this were pre lewd to ending or greatly limiting the Muller investigation and I hope
President Trump and those he listens to will refrainM from
that Jeff Sessions a well-known figure on Capitol Hill was the United
States Senator representing Alabama for 20 years so a close colleague for a
number of years with a lot of these lawmakers Texas Republican Senator John Cornyn a member
of the Judiciary Committee saying moments ago quote
attorney general sessions has selflessly dedicated more than 40 years to serving the people of
Alabama and the nation as our country's top law enforcement
official he has been integral in fighting the opioid academic epidemic keeping violent
criminals off our streets and supporting victims those who know him his
commitment to the rule of law and his deep and abiding concern for our country so bottom
line a lot of shock on Capitol Hill because this is somebody they
served with for a long time although they did expect that there would be a shake-up
coming and now the focus of course will be on confirming a new
Attorney General with all these things going on in the world Mike Emanuel thanks are we
approaching a constitutional
crisis I think we're on the verge of that what raises my concerns as a person has been
so vocal against the investigation that was going on now
putting in charge a day after the election Democrats sounding the alarm after jeff sessions
is pushed out as Attorney General some on the Left are calling
for an emergency hearing on his firing as well as his temporary replacement suggesting
that Matt Whitaker has been hostile towards the Muller
investigation joined now by South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham
Republican and member of the Senate Judiciary Committee who was also with the President
Trump today at the official swearing-in of Road judge Cavanaugh senator always good to
have you with us thank you for being here thank
you you see you heard the reaction from Senator Joe Manchin and I would just remind you as
many have been reminding you today of what you said back
in July of 2017 here's this if Jeff session is fired there will be holy Hill to pay any
effort to go after Muller could be the
beginning of the end of the Trump presidency unless Muller did something wrong so given
where we are now what do you say now so when was that point you I of 2017 changed
yeah so what I've been saying for months is that everybody every president deserves an
attorney general they have confidence in and they can work
with I like Jeff Sessions I've known Jeff for a long time I hope he
goes and runs for his old Senate seat in Alabama it's clear to me it's not working was not
working between attorney
General Sessions and President Trump so for months now I've been saying after the election
if the president wants to change Attorney General's he has every
right to do so I spent most of the morning with the president to my good friend Joe Manchin
congratulations on winning your race I am NOT alarmed at all about mall are being interfere
dwith I think mr.
Whitacre was a good pick I think he's going to be as fair as impartial as Eric Holder
and Laura rattle Lynch work the bottom line is
this is hysteria more than it is anything else I am here to tell you and everybody else
that mr. Miller will be allowed to do his job and hopefully that investigation will
come to a conclusion here pretty soon here's what Nancy Pelosi said she said
it's impossible to read Attorney General Sessions firing as anything other than
another blatant attempt by President Trump to undermine and end the special counsels
investigation did he give you any assurances did you discuss this at
all today anything you could share with us with regard to that I am highly confident
that the attorney the the interim attorney general is going to
honor the ability of mr. Miller to finish his job I hope he'll do it sooner rather than
later and Nancy Pelosi is looking this at this through the eyes of
somebody hates Trump that finds evil at every turn that's the San Francisco perspective
I can assure you if the shoe were on the other foot
and this was a Democratic president
wanted to pick a new Attorney General nobody would say much about it at all is there any
chance that Mark Whitacre who as I'm sure you have been you know
hearing about has said a few things that have raised eyebrows in terms of the scope of the
investigation he has said that it shouldn't go outside of the campaign
it should not extend into the finances of the Trump family and a president Trump he
just you know thinks that that's out of the purview of where this
investigation has gone is there anything in what he said in the past
that concerns you about his ability to be the interim Attorney General or indicates
to you that he has any intention of limiting this investigation
in any way absolutely not the point he was making is that the special counsel doesn't
have writ large he has confined I think to his mandate
and that is to investigate whether or not the Trump campaign colluded with the Russians
during the 2016 election in an illegal well whether or not there was any
obstruction of justice not to look at every deal that the president had
as a private citizen before he became a candidate I agree with that but here's the point mr.
Mulder I think is in the final stages of doing his report I have a
lot of confidence in Bob Muller I'm going to meet with the interim Attorney General
mr.
Whitacre next week and I'm gonna have him assure me that he's gonna let
mr.
Muller do his job and if there's any interference you'll be the first to
hear about it on fox news I don't think that's going to happen I'm not concerned about that
if I were I would tell you do you think that mark that Matt Whittaker
is going to be an interim Attorney General as he is right now or that it's possible that
he could keep that position I guess look ahead to the confirmation process
for me a number of names thathave been put out there Chris Christie
Pam Bondi trey Gowdy also mentioned on that list how do you see this working out I'd hate
to have to choose between those three because there are all such good
candidates I talked a pretty good at length with the president about the Attorney General's
selection he deserves someone
that he trusts that has confidence in but the American people also have to have confidence
in this person and they gotta get through the Senate we're going to have an increased
majority in the United States Senate I don't expect many Democrats to help you
know everybody who is talking about Jeff Sessions now the Democratic side
all voted against him so this is just politics Jill mentioned discredit voted for Jeff Sessions
so there are a lot of names and you mentioned three there's a lot
more than that maybe mr.
Whitacre
makes his way on the list I don't know but I do know this I voted for Holder and I voted
for Lynch because I think every president deserves the ability to
make qualified appointments including Donald Trump Brett Kavanaugh was qualified by any
measure what they tried to do to him was despicable so I'm going to
stand by this president's ability to make a selection this choosing you know
I wonder if you think that going through this process of a new Attorney General could turn
into a similar thing than what we saw in the Cavanaugh investigation
or do you think that the election that we saw this week has maybe changed some people's
minds about how to
go about that well the second kick of a mule normally doesn't help you if you don't realize
but now that the effort to destroy Brett Kavanaugh by Liberal Democrats on the Judiciary
Committee actually destroyed trump state Republicans then you're not really paying much attention
to what happened so there will be a pic by the president
he will have the same right as President Obama and every other
president to pick somebody that he has confidence in and they have to get confirmed if they
try to do to the Attorney General what they did to Brett Kavanaugh
then it will it will backfire as it did with Cavanaugh all right
before I let you go as you know after the midterms the day after pretty much the midterm
the presidential 2020 race sort of and Michael Moore I don't know
you know if you listen too much to what he has to say but you know everybody pretty much
weighs it more closely I'm sure you do you said that he thinks
the president Trump is a tumor on our democracy that was one of the nicer things that he said
and he also had some suggestions for who he thinks should be
the candidate in 2020 I'm sure listen to this and let me know what you think we have to
run a beloved American yeah we have to rely on a beloved Obama became beloved the night
of that convention and
he was beloved from that moment on Eddie when he gave that speech we need to run somebody
up an answer Eddie whether it's it's got to be like a Michelle Obama or
it's got to be a Solis Oliver see what do you think about those ideas so far senator
the Michelle Obama is a very talented person I'm sure she'd be a formidable
candidate it's going to be hard to beat Trump one of the reasons President Trump is doing
so well it's because of people like Michael Moore who remind
us at every turn what would
happen if you put the Democrats in charge people like Michael Moore would have a bigger
say in your life not many people are jumping up down at that idea
that Michael Moore will be a frequent guest of the White House you know he's eeling pretty
good because he looks at the midterms this has you know Michigan
Pennsylvania Wisconsin alternate blue those are formidable changes that we saw in the
midterms in terms of 2020 quick thought on that for me I think president Trump's going
to be hard to beat midterm
we basically defied expectations we actually drew the majority in the Senate name one time
that's happened maybe once in the last hundred years and the losses
in the house were a lot less than historical so I'm ready to govern and I'm ready for 2020
I'm all in for Trump and here's my advice to the Democrat Party
keep listening to Michael Moore he will steer you in the right direction
Senator Lindsey Graham always a pleasure sir thank you very much good to see you tonight
thank you thank you very much
