Yep, that's perfect and... what? My lights are broken?
That's really sad...
Anyways, it doesn't matter.
How did I do the impossible?
I know, I know, it's not actually impossible to be accepted into the university of your dreams.
It's just ALMOST impossible.
And to put it simply, I have no idea how I got accepted by Columbia University.
So that's all. Subscribe!
Ok, maybe I can give you a few tips to have a good application
but I can't make any promises.
But to start off, how are you doing? I hope you're doing well.
It's been a while since my last video, no?
I took a long time to do my applications.
It's normal, I know, but it's a bit excessive
when we have to be under a lot of stress while we
research universities
visit universities
decide whether or not a third cousin counts for legacy
write essays
complete a portfolio
revise essays
cry in a corner because our grades aren't good enough
rewrite essays
search how to live as a homeless person because all the universities will reject us
rewrite essays one more time when there are two minutes before the deadline
and finally, submit the application
No? That's just me? Ok...
But don't forget to look over the application again before submitting it because
I didn't do that and after, I realized that I made a mistake.
it was... traumatic
...and there. I've finished all my applications.
ah... and now... wait...
no. No.
I made a mistake!
NOO! NO! NO!
*hyperventilation*
in fact, it's still traumatic.
I can only hope that they don't look at the mistake.
But apparently it didn't matter because on the decision day, it was something like this:
In fact, it was exactly like this because I recorded it.
Before I start, when I'm anxious, like now, I hyperventilate a lot and I whispered in the video strangely so sorry for both. Also, I censored the video, so if you do not hear the audio sometimes, that's why.
So now that I'm an expert, apparently,
I'm going to give you some tips to have a good application.
1. Firstly, start early.
It's very simple, but very important.
I waited to start my application and we'll only say that
I was so obsessed and stressed that all the details of my application are perfect
that my friends were very worried about my well-being.
It's not bad to be detailed, but if I had started early,
there wouldn't have been so much stress with that.
2. Find a university that you actually want to attend.
I know a lot of people that applied to universities that they didn't really like
and to do that, you waste a lot of time and energy.
If you have uncertainties, it's probably not the university for you.
Also, make a list of all the things you really want in a university.
What things do you like specifically?
For me, it was interesting architecture and an urban environment.
So Columbia was perfect along with the benefits of
being in New York, so there's a very dynamic relationship between the city and university.
it's up north,
and there's a subway do I don't have to drive because I hate driving.
In my own utopia, there are no cars at all.
...maybe one or two, but that's something for a different video.
3. Express your individuality in the essays.
It's not enough to simply respond to the questions. Everyone does that.
You have to incorporate elements of your personality.
For example, I wrote my common app essay on the stained glass
I created from the inspiration of the National Cathedral.
Interesting things like that.
Speaking of interesting things, here are a few funny things I put in my application.
Columbia asked for the books I read during my free time
and, among others, I put this book
of all the stained glass in the National Cathedral.
It's just images.
Yes, there is some text, but it's not difficult at all.
Columbia also asked for the publications that I read
and I put my school's newspaper.
The funny thing is that I write for this newspaper so maybe there's some conflict of interest there. I don't know.
In one of my essays, I said that suburbia (in the United States specifically)
is "architectural purgatory"
It's not completely wrong...
Columbia also asked for the other things that I like
so I put Calvin and Hobbes, that's not bad...
but I also put a youtuber
Hey Vsauce! Michael here.
Yes, yes, I put Vsauce.
Looking back, I'm surprised that they didn't reject me for any one of those things.
Anyways, those are all the tips I can give you.
Again, I can't make any promises.
I'm a high school student for crying out loud.
What do I know?
But I know one thing with certainty:
you don't have to be valedictorian
have a perfect SAT or ACT score
all the AP courses in the world in your transcript
or even a 5 in all AP courses
or a perfect GPA
to be accepted by a good university.
Because me, I have none of that.
In fact, there are many people in my school that have better things than me
and that was one of the reasons it was really surprising that Columbia accepted me.
So hopefully that will give you some confidence.
And Columbia, thank you for the acceptance.
I am very very happy to study at Columbia
It's really a dream come true.
But for this video, that's all! Subscribe!
