A third of the way through yet another Premier League season. The table is taking shape
Much, as it stands, is as expected.Man City top the pile. Liverpool giving chase
Cardiff and Huddersfield thrashing against the quicksand. So far, so predictable
Yet in the heart of the table, something remarkable is happening. So quietly you might not have even noticed it
But it's there, rumbling along, while all eyes are distracted by the glory and despair at either end of the division
Bournemouth are slowly, consistently, going about their business under Eddie Howe and have found themselves in the mix for European places
Seventh is sometimes enough for that. Burnley qualified for the Europa League that way last season
The Cherries, though, have spent most of the season in the top six, gatecrashing that most exclusive of clubs to which only the richest are invited
And while results did not quite go their way on Sunday, victory over Arsenal will put Bournemouth a point behind the fifth-placed Gunners

Bournemouth, like many clubs who punch harder than tradition dictates they ought, have often relied on the whole achieving more than the combination of albeit decent parts
Team spirit, hard work, some good football too.But Howe has nurtured a cluster of individuals who are producing incredible levels of performance
Ryan Fraser played for Bournemouth in League One. He cost about £500,000. Now, he shares the lead for Premier League assists (6), has created more 'big chances' than anyone else and is behind only Willian, Eden Hazard and David Silva for overall chances created
Fraser has scored three goals too.Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil, who Fraser will face on Sunday afternoon, is miles behind despite his £42
5million price tag and £300,000-a-week wages.Team-mate Callum Wilson has six goals in his first 12 games
That earned him his first England call-up and he marked his debut against USA with a goal too
Wilson has had the most 'big chances' of any striker this season. More than Harry Kane, more than Mo Salah, more than Sergio Aguero
Only Glenn Murray and Aleksandar Mitrovic have scored more for teams outside the 'Big Six' had scored more than, although Wilson has a game in hand
He's also created seven big chances of his own with four assists. For a pair who cost £3
5m combined, their return is spectacular.Josh King, who scored eight goals last season, has chipped in with four already this time around
Youngster David Brooks has three as does Junior Stanislas. The big question for Bournemouth is whether they can sustain it
Or will they eventually get noticed by the bouncers and bundles out the door and down the steps into the middle of the road where they belong
To be able to predict that, we need to know if they deserve to be where they are now
Is sixth justified? Or is it a flukey false position? The underlying statistics tell us that Bournemouth are in fact punching at their weight not above it
Bournemouth have scored 21 goals this season. Only Man City, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool had scored more after 12 games
And only City, Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham had kept more than Bournemouth's four clean sheets
And when it comes to 'Big Chances', only Man City had created more than the Cherries' 38
A delve even deeper and there's a case that Bournemouth could be higher still. The term 'Expected Goals' is adored by stattos and abhorred by the likes of the Soccer Saturday pundits
The metric which analyses the quality of chances created and conceded by teams – regardless of whether they end up in the net
We all know how fine the margins are in football. The inside of a post here, an unfathomable miss there, a ridiculous miracle save
Expected Goals (xG) tells us how well a team is doing behind all that. And Bournemouth are doing very well indeed
Howe's side were ranked fourth for expected goals per game (1.91) heading into the weekend, behind only Man City, Chelsea and Liverpool
When those expected goals are turned into expected points, Bournemouth were also fourth behind those three unbeaten sides
Arsenal, by contrast, are ranked 11th despite being 10 Premier League games unbeaten
Unai Emery's side are not performing all that well but are grinding out results.Bournemouth's fixtures so far have been relatively kind
The real test is on the horizon. Arsenal today. Man City and Liverpool among their next four games
Add Tottenham and Manchester United in their next eight. If Bournemouth are still mixing it beyond those tests, fans might just be ready to dust off their passports
