Hello, I'm Fran and we'll learn how to make a Coptic Sketchbook
The materials we'll need are:
Cardboard
Needle and wool (or waxed thread)
Glue* (This is optional, read below why)
Watecolor paper, or any paper of your choice
So, let's begin!
First, we're going to mark and cut the covers of our sketchbook
I'm going to make a long one, of 16x8cm covers (2 covers!)
let's cut our covers, be careful!
Then, let's take out the paper from the pad and make some signatures
They must be the same size of our covers
Make the sheets double size from the longest part of the cover (32 cm) and cut
Fold your sheet in the middle, and let's make 5 or 6 signatures*
To make one signature you need at least 2 sheets
Grab one sheet and write some marks of half-inches apart to make the holes for our thread
Following this marks, write onto the spine of all stacked signatures using a ruler
Write on the cover, 1cm apart from the spine side, the same marks as our signatures
and make the holes with a big needle or wood needle
Make the holes of each signature too!
Now, take the wool and measure at least 6x times of the width of the cover
Knot it and let's stitch it up!
First: pass the needle through the first hole of the signature n°1
Then, pass the needle through the first hole of the cover, from outside!
Take the needle from inside the cover
Stitch around the thread
and back into the first hole of the signature
Get into the second hole of the signature
Stitch around the cover from outside to inside
Loop around the previous thread
and get back into the signature
Repeat this process with all the remaining holes of the signature
Let's stitch the next signature n°2
Stitch into the second signature from outside
Stitch into the next hole of the same signature from inside
Loop around the previous stitch from the first signature
and back into the second hole of signature n°2
Repeat this with the third hole of the signature n°2
Loop around ~
and back into the signature
And repeat the same steps for each following signature!
For the LAST signature we need to stitch both signature and cover
First, stitch from the outside of the cover
loop around the previous seam of the signature
Enter into the signature in the first hole
stitch into the next hole
and back outside again to the cover
Enter into the second hole of the cover
Loop around the previous seam
and back into the signature
and repeat the same steps until the last hole of the cover
To close our stitches, get back into the last hole of the signature
let's make a knot
and cut the remaining thread
and we have our sketchbook ready!
But to make it special, we can draw, paint and customize our covers
I painted turquoise because I love that color
and drew little dots over the cover with gold paint
For each sheet, I cut the edges with a round corner punch from Kadomaru PRO
and that's our first handmade sketchbook
this bookbinding allows you to open flat each page and it's super comfy for drawing ♥
