Ginsburg to skip State of the Union to speak in Rhode Island

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is skipping President Donald Trump's first

State of the Union address while she travels to Rhode Island to speak to a group of law

students.

Ginsburg is scheduled to speak on Tuesday at Roger Williams University School of Law

in Bristol.

The talk will only be open to students, faculty and staff, although members of the media are

allowed.

During her trip to Rhode Island, Ginsburg also is set to make stops at a synagogue and

at U.S. District Court, both in Providence.

Both stops are closed to the media.

The trailblazing, 84-year-old justice is the subject of a new documentary called "RBG,"

which just premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.

Cynthia Nixon calls for Americans to 'take to the streets' if Trump fires Mueller

Actress Cynthia Nixon says if President Trump fires special counsel Robert Mueller, the

commander in chiefs opponents must take to the streets.

We must make the firing of Robert Mueller a stark line in the sand, the former Sex

and the City star said at a Monday event dubbed the Peoples State of the Union,

and if Trump crosses it we must take to the streets as never before!

Nixon was among the celebrity speakers at the anti-Trump event, scheduled the night

before his first State of the Union address to Congress.

The New York Times reported last week that in June Trump wanted to fire Mueller who's

leading the probe into Russian interference in the 2016 election but ultimately backed

off when White House counsel Don McGahn threatened to quit.

[Russian President] Vladimir Putin, and [President] Donald Trump and his enablers

in the GOP Congress may think they have us on the ropes, Nixon, 51, told the crowd

in New York.

They may think that our belief in true participatory democracy is waning, that we

are complacent, that we are distracted, that we are just too beaten down from this horror

show year weve had and the sickening prospect of three more like it, the actress continued.

But we are here to prove them wrong!

There is no cavalry coming.

We are the cavalry! Nixon added to cheers.

If we want our democracy back, we have to get out there ourselves and seize it.

The Peoples State of the Union, hosted by We Stand United, MoveOn.org Political Action

and Stand Up America, featured a bevy of Trump critics, including Spotlight star Mark

Ruffalo, actor John Leguizamo, director Michael Moore and actress Rosie Perez.

Leaked government Brexit paper suggests UK economic hit - Duration: 3:19.

Leaked government Brexit paper suggests UK economic hit

The UK economy will grow more slowly outside the European Union, no matter what deal is

struck with Brussels, a leaked government document suggests.

BuzzFeed News reports the Whitehall analysis found growth over the next 15 years could

be up to 8% lower than if the UK stayed in the EU.

The document is said to look at the likely impact of different scenarios.

Government sources say the UK will not be worse off, and its preferred bespoke trade

deal option was not analysed.

Laura Kuenssberg analysis: May's Brexit backdrop EU sets out Brexit transition demands

Brexit: All you need to know According to Buzzfeed, the leaked document,

titled EU Exit Analysis - Cross Whitehall Briefing and drawn up for the Department for

Exiting the EU, suggests almost every part of the economy would suffer.

But Conservative MP and leave campaigner Iain Duncan Smith told the Today programme the

paper should be taken "with a pinch of salt" as almost every single forecast on Brexit

has been wrong.

"It's an incomplete report... deliberately leaked because it gives a bad view," he said.

The paper is likely to sharpen the debate in cabinet as the least bad option appears

to be to remain close to the EU - the "Philip Hammond option", said the BBC's assistant

political editor, Norman Smith.

But the broader impact on the political debate was questionable, he added, as the public

have so far proven "remarkably resistant to these warnings of economic woe".

The report suggests UK economic growth would be 8% lower than current forecasts, in the

years ahead, if the country left the bloc with no deal and reverted to World Trade Organisation

rules.

'Significant caveats' It says growth would be 5% lower if Britain

negotiated a free trade deal and 2% lower even if the UK were to continue to adhere

to the rules of the single market.

All scenarios assume a new deal with the US.

The government sources point out that the document has not modelled the effect of a

bespoke deal covering trade and financial services - the government's preferred scenario

- and it does not attempt to anticipate the outcome of negotiations.

The BBC understands the Treasury contributed to the document but sources say it is part

of a much wider range of work going on in Whitehall.

The source said: "An early draft of this next stage of analysis has looked at different

off-the-shelf arrangements that currently exist as well as other external estimates.

"It does not, however, set out or measure the details of our desired outcome - a new

deep and special partnership with the EU - or predict the conclusions of the negotiations.

"It also contains a significant number of caveats and is hugely dependant on a wide

range of assumptions."

The chairman of the European Research Group of Conservative MPs, Jacob Rees-Mogg, said

that economic modelling so far had been "highly speculative" and often inaccurate.

Similar analysis carried out by the Treasury ahead of the Brexit referendum predicted large

scale job losses if there was a vote to leave and had been "comprehensively wrong", he said.

But Labour MP Chris Leslie, a member of the Open Britain group which campaigns against

a "hard" Brexit, said ministers had to publish their analysis in full.

North Korea will be able to hit the US with nuclear weapons in a 'handful of months', CIA director w - Duration: 3:16.

North Korea will be able to hit the US with nuclear weapons in a 'handful of months',

CIA director warns

Donald Trump's spymaster yesterday warned that North Korea could have the ability to

hit the US with nuclear weapons in a 'handful of months'.

Mike Pompeo, the director of the CIA, also said he wanted America to get back on its

front foot by stepping up covert action overseas - pledging to do his 'damnest' to

steal secrets from foreign powers.

Speaking from the CIAs headquarters in Langley, Virginia, he revealed the US President

is briefed on the most exquisite truth that the CIA has learnt almost every day,

and is curious about the facts.

In a wide-ranging interview with the BBC, he warned that he expected Russia to target

the US mid-term elections later this year, but insisted the US would be ready to push

back.

Mr Pompeo, a Trump loyalist who was handed the job in January last year, said Kim Jong-Un

and North Koreas nuclear programme were high on his agenda.

He went on: We talk about him having the ability to deliver a nuclear weapon to the

United States in a matter of a handful of months.

Our task is to have provided the intelligence to the president of the United States that

will deliver to him a set of options that continue to take down that risk by non-diplomatic

means.

The President and senior officials were mindful of the fact that all-out conflict could lead

to massive destruction and loss of life, but that many things were possible in scenarios

for removing Kim Jong-Un or preventing him being able to launch nuclear missiles, he

added.

When asked about President Trumps use of Twitter and frank language about foreign policy,

he said: When you see this language that the president chooses to use, there are many

audiences for it and I assure you Kim Jong-Un understands the message that America is serious.

In bullish remarks, he spelled out his vision for an unburdened and unleashed CIA, describing

it as the worlds finest espionage service in an ever-increasingly uncertain world.

Building on how he wants the CIA to operate, he told the BBC News at Ten: We are going

to go out there and do our damnedest to steal secrets on behalf of the American people.

And I wanted to get back on our front foot. Quizzed about his relationship with Trump

and his capability as President, he revealed he briefs the Commander-in-Chief most days

when both are in Washington DC.

He said: We deliver nearly every day personally to the President the most exquisite truth

that we know from the CIA.

He is very focused in the sense that he is curious about the facts that we present.

He is curious in the sense he wants to understand why we believe them.

He dismissed claims in the recent book Fire and Fury, which raised questions about

President Trumps abilities as leader.

Its absurd.

I havent read the book.

I dont intend to.

The claim that the president isnt engaged and doesnt have a grasp on these important

issues is dangerous and false and it saddens me that someone would have taken the time

to write such drivel, he added.

He said there had been no significant diminishing of Russian attempts at subversion in Europe

and the US.

He also said he was concerned about subversion by Moscow in the upcoming US mid-term elections

in November.
