One of the most traditional and fun Mardi Gras events
in southwestern Louisiana
is something called Iowa Chicken Run
It looks like we're going to run after some chickens here
I have no idea what to expect
Look at me!
What happens here?
What is gonna happen?
We're all gonna line up in the parade
and we're gonna walk out to the store
And Mr. Rodney, my father-in-law, right there
is gonna do a dance and he's gonna
throw the chicken up
and the kids are gonna run and grab it
Only the kids run after the chicken?
No, not only. The adults can run too

We gonna throw some chickens. I wanna see y'all run some chickens. Ok?

Some of them get away and some of them we end up catching. But the most funniest thing is
as you pass through highway, two days later
and that same rooster that we lost is walking across the road. Like, I'm saved! I'm saved!
We're going on a hayride and each one has it's own bathroom

How hard was it?
Not that hard. The kid caught it
I'm just helping my cousin bring it back to the trailer
So what's your favorite part of all this?
I don't like to run the chickens
It's going from the yard to yard. You know? And dancing...
and they giving us food to come back and make the gumbo. That's, that's my favorite part
So, I like the begging
Because if they don't have anything to give us
then we don't stop. We keep going. So you have to show us either a bag of rice...
something that goes into the gumbo
Right
And then once you get back is when you normally prepare the gumbo
for everyone to eat, who participate in
But, because it's gotten so much bigger, we just go and pay for it out of pocket
So, whatever... We go and get back... Sometimes we have to use what they give us if we have a big crowd
You know, because later on tonight, a dance is gonna happen, and people are gonna come out
and the gumbo is free. So you actually eat all you want

Along the way they also get some donations to prepare a gumbo. That's what all the celebration was about

All chickens survive in the end
So this here is a whole day event
Now they're going to get all the ingredients
that they collected,
prepare a gumbo, eat together, celebrate!

We're gonna go actually to our next location as there's more Mardi Gras to see here, in Lake Charles
