An out of control Chinese space station is expected to crash into earth at some point
in the next few days.
Problem is, no one knows where the debris from the space station is going to land.
What is happening, this is Inform Overload, where we overload you with information.
I'm Charlotte Dobre.
The tiangong-1 was China's first space station, it was launched in September 2011.
but the Chinese lost control of it back in 2016.
Since then, the European space agency has been monitoring its decent.
Its been pretty hard to figure out what kind of damage this space station could do because
we know very little about the Chinese space program.
We don't know what the space station is made out of.
It is going to reenter the atmosphere between March 31 and April 4.
It is highly probable that debris from the space station will also crash into earth in
some places, likely lower Michigan in the US.
So what are the chances that the tiangong 1 is going to drop out of the sky and squish
you like a bug?
According to aerospace, the chances are extremely slim…like we're talking a 1 in a trillion
chance.
For some comparison, there's a one in 1.4 million chance of you being struck by lightning.
That being said, Its extremely difficult to predict what will happen when the space station
re enters earths atmosphere.
According to Alan Duffy, a researcher at the center of astrophysics in Australia, some
part of the upper atmosphere are thicker than others, meaning that the craft slows unpredictably
and since it travels around earth in just 90 minutes, the craft could fall anywhere
along a 1 thousand kilometer track.
this isn't the first time a space station has fallen to earth.
In 1979, the first US space station, the skylab, fell to earth.
Debris hit parts of western Australia, and didn't end up hurting anyone.
In 2001, the Russian space station mir, fell to earth, but most of it burnt up in the atmosphere.
I guess we will just have to wait over the next few days to find out if the space station
will cause any issues.
Meanwhile, you should definitely keep your wits about you.
How to spot an IO fan, they are looking up at the sky making sure space station debris
isn't going to hit them in the face.
If you're interested, you can actually see the space station live using a live feed set
up by Tenagra Observatories in Arizona and the virtual telescope project.
Tune in on march 28 starting at 5 am pacific time.
I'll post the link in the description Haiden Alain – who else is watching while
eating potatoes.
Sorry Charlotte I got really hungry.
Don't apologize, I encourage eating potatoes.
