Weston McKennie: Shootingstar from Schalke 04 in interview with Buzz04 (Part 2) - Duration: 7:23.
Buzz04: You've been on Schalke for a year now, how soon you knew last year: I want
to go to Schalke 04? Was it a quick decision, an easy one or did you have
to think about it a lot? McKennie: Yes, I had to think about it, because I had a
an offer for a professional contract from my team in the US. I played there in an academy like the Knappenschmiede
so it wasn't an easy decision. But I was here in
germany from age 6 to 9 and I have learned to play football here
so I wanted to come back. In that moment I decided to come back. Buzz04: Ok, did you talk to Jürgen
Klinsmann and asked him about Schalke?
McKennie: No I didn't, maybe my consultant, but I didn't talk to him.
Buzz04: Your german is really good. How helpful was it, that you
lived in germany as a child?
German is heard to learn. McKennie: Yes it is, but when you're young,
it is much easier to learn. When I went back to the US I couldn't talk to anybody, because I lost everything.
And then I came back and it was quick and easy.
Buzz04: You came to germany because your father was stationed here with the army. Did you learn discipline,
self-confidence and hard work from your father or where does it come from? McKennie: Yes, I learned it from him,
but from my mother too. She didn't work for the army,
but at the base. They wanted the best for me like
"Yes Sir, no Sir, yes Ma'am, no Ma'am"
Buzz04: Very disciplined...
McKennie: Yes, very disciplined.
That helps playing football, because I
have to learn responsibility and I have to do what the coach says. It's that easy.
Buzz04: You're only 18 years old, still very young, but you've to us, your
parents live in the US. How difficult is it for you?
McKennie: Yes, it's difficult most of the time, it's hard for me, because
I can not see my family for six month, but
I was everywhere when I was young. When I was ten or nine,
I came to germany for the summer to train with my former coach
and I was without my family the whole summer.
That's not easy, but now with FaceTime and such things, it's much better.
Buzz04: The technology of today...
Buzz04: So let's talk about the sport, about the youth team and
Norbert Elgert. You came to germany and I
think you were captain of the team after four games! Were
you surprised, that Norbert Elgert gave you the captain's armband?
McKennie: Because I was new and because I was american yes I was, but he said to me
before, just for fun when I was at the Knappenschmiede and he was there and said:
"I heard you are a leader!"And I said:"Yes, would be a pleasure!" And then he did it.
But I wasn't captain the whole season. We had five captains and most of the time ist was
Jannis Küber, good player and
a good friend of mine. He was captain most of the time and when he was injured or
Norbert Elgert wanted a change, I was the captain.
Buzz04: How much contact do you have with
Norbert Elgert?
McKennie:A lot, because I had some coaches, that I have to thank but Norbert
Elgert, he was the best coach for me.
Buzz04: Your promoter a little bit...
McKennie: He didn't teach just football.
He teaches you, how to deal with
the life after the football, how to deal with the life now... Buzz04: The personality?
McKennie: Yes, the personality!
And that was important for me! Buzz04: Ok, you came from the youth team, together with Haji Wright and Luke Hemmerich. Who is the
next, that can take the step to the professional team?
McKennie: I don't know, we have to watch the season of the youth team...
...who works hard there...
...I think, many of them can do it.
Buzz04: Is there someone you would highlight?
McKennie: Yes, Jannis Kübler,
he's good and there are more, you can take Nassim Boujellab,
you can take Florian Kügler, the forward, because when you do it right and work hard,
there are three or four who can reach the goal.
Buzz04: Last season you gave your debut when Markus Weinzierl was the coach.
He said:"Of Hemmerich, Wright and McKennie, it is
McKennie, who is the best!"
What does that mean to you, that Markus
Weinzierl said that to you?
McKennie: Yes, that is...I'm thankful for it.
But I didn't want to imagine, that I'm the best, because Luke Hemmerich made a good
job in the pre season too.
We wanted to stay together and not be like: "I'm better than you!" or "You have to that, because I play" or so.
We came together from the U19 and we wanted
to improve.
Buzz04: Step by step...
McKennie: Yes, step by step. And when I see, that Luke
has a problem or something, I will help him. When he sees, that I have a problem, he helps me. The same with Haji. We're helping each other.
Buzz04: All together.
Ok, you spoke about the small steps, the little goals.
After the trip to Chine you said: "My next goal is to be part of the team in Austria!"
That worked out so what's the next goal?
McKennie: My next goal is to have more performances in the Bundesliga.
I want to improve and I want to
make it hard for my competitors.
I want to make the coach think. He should not have an easy decision while making the line up.
Buzz04: You want to be a serious candidate for the line up!
McKennie: Yes!
So I think, my next goal is to play!
Buzz04: In the Bundesliga or the DFB cup!
McKennie: Or in the DFB cup. Wherever I can play.
