Chuck Schumer's Big Plan Just Went Down In Flames Because Of One Senator
Chuck Schumer laid out a two-step plan for Democrats.
Democrats would win back the Senate in 2018 and launch impeachment proceedings in 2019.
But that plan went down in flames because of this Senator.
A Vulnerable Incumbent
Democrats must flip two Republican held Senate seats in order to win back the majority.
They must also hold every single Democrat seat as well.
There are 10 Democrats running for re-election in states Donald Trump won in 2016.
If Republicans defeat just one Democrat incumbent, it will make it nearly impossible for Democrats
to seize power.
Florida Senator Bill Nelson is one of the most vulnerable Democrat Senators in America.
Nelson keeps a low profile in Florida and that means he has low-name recognition despite
serving three terms.
Two-term Republican Governor Rick Scott is challenging Nelson.
Scott's position gives him a high profile statewide, since voters are familiar with
him.
The Governor's job approval is 55 percent according to an April Morning Consult poll.
Scott is worth hundreds of millions of dollars and will spend whatever it takes to win.
Republicans put the full court press on to recruit Scott into the race and were relieved
when Scott said yes.
Nelson Gets Bad News
Nelson faced even more bad news.
In addition to voters liking Scott and his fundraising advantage, key Democrat voting
groups are not fully supporting Nelson.
A Democratic group conducted a poll of Hispanic voters and found Nelson barely led Scott.
Democratic aligned Latino groups surveyed 400 Hispanics and found Nelson clinging to
a three-point lead, 44 to 41 percent.
By comparison, Donald Trump won 35 percent of Florida Hispanics when he beat Hillary
Clinton in Florida.
Scott winning over 40 percent of Hispanics means he is on track for victory in the fall.
Republicans defeating Nelson would slam the breaks on Schumer and the Democrats winning
back the Senate.
2020 Implications
It would be bad news in other ways for Democrats.
Democrats expect to gain seats in the 2018 midterms.
Historically, the party out of power stages a strong showing in midterm elections.
If the Democrats lose the Florida Senate race, it raises serious questions about what will
happen in future elections.
In 2020, Donald Trump will run for re-election.
Pundits expect the political environment to be more favorable to Republicans.
Donald Trump's re-election will boost Republican turnout and voter enthusiasm.
Democrats cannot win the Presidency without Florida.
Experts labeled Florida a swing state.
Barack Obama did win Florida twice.
However, Republicans have held the Governor's mansion since 1998.
Florida is a swing state that is trending Republican.
Rick Scott winning the 2018 race against Bill Nelson could cement that fact.
In addition, a Scott victory would blow up the Democrats chances to win back a majority
and remove Trump.
Scott's strong showing with Hispanic voters is a good sign for Republicans in November.
