hey techdoctor can you help me understand the difference between proxy
and VPN and smart DNS well in this video today we'll be going over those three
technologies and I'll give you the pros and cons of each so with all of that
being said let's get started
so right from the top when you do access the Internet you're pretty much making a
direct connection from your computer via is peat whichever site or service you
want to access now this can expose information about
you like for example your IP address and definitely where you're browsing from
now these data or this information can be used to build up or work out what
your identity is so this is where a proxy server would come in now a proxy
server acts as an intermediary or a go-between you and the rest of the
internet so if you do choose to browse through a proxy server Nonie are you
increasing your privacy you also have the added benefit of changing your
virtual location so if I do choose to browse through an Australian proxy
server the target websites or services would think I'm actually sitting in
Australia now it's VPNs once again you are connect into a server first before
you access your content the big difference is with VPNs you get
encryption now for the people that don't know what is encryption so let's say
you're in a classroom and you want to pass a message to your friend on the
other side every person that you pass the message through to get to your
friend will be able to read exactly what you've written unless of course you
write it in a code where only you and your friend know what that code is so
that means now even if somebody tries to read it they will not be able to
understand their and this is the same for your ISP if your traffic is
encrypted they can't see what you're doing on the Internet and this is
basically the fundamentals of encryption now it's smart DNS it's not going to
send all of your traffic to a proxy server it's not going to send all of
your traffic to a VPN server only the traffic that would have been normally
geo restricted will go via a proxy server the rest of your traffic will go
completely unencrypted completely normal to its normal destination so in this
scenario yes you don't get encryption it doesn't improve your privacy but does
allow you to access that geo restricted content so if I'm on my computer and I'm
being normal browsing I'm doing some shopping on Amazon or some shopping on
are the websites the traffic is gonna go via ISP as per normal and get to my
target website now if I decide to fire up Netflix and I want to access a USA
content I can configure my smart DNS to go via a proxy
in the USA so only that traffic for Netflix goes via USA everything else
carries on per normal so even though my traffic is not encrypted I don't get any
improved privacy it does mean I can still access that geo restricted content
so that's nice summarize all of this and just put this into a table so with proxy
servers probably the biggest benefit is the fact that either they're very cheap
or in most cases you can just find them for free so anybody can just open up a
browser and just type in free proxy servers or proxy server lists and you'll
definitely get some results you can then use these proxy servers and access stuff
that's normally geo restricted now in terms of negatives probably the biggest
thing is is the fact that you know if it's a free service if it's a free proxy
server there's gonna be thousands of people all trying to use it and that
journey means it's gonna be slow so if you are trying to do some HD streaming
or definitely you're trying to download through a proxy server you definitely
will notice that speed loss the other thing is if you are using free lists is
that there's no guarantee of uptime so these proxy service can go up or down
people can be restarting them or they can be offline for weeks so you just
don't get that guarantee of service on top of that if you use a standard HTTP
proxy which means there's no encryption so your traffic could be intercepted
people could see what you're doing also using a third-party proxy server
especially a free one who knows what they're doing with your data next up we
have smart unis so the advantage of smart DNS is firstly they tend to be
quite cheap secondly you can definitely access to your restricted content
because the way the technology works is when it detects that you're trying to
access something that would be normally geo restricted a diverse our traffic
through a proxy server in a different location so using a proxy you can then
access that geo restricted content now because there's no encryption involved
it can be faster than using a normal VPN because as we know the VPNs the traffic
has to be encrypted then decrypted then on to where it needs to go but in case
of smart DNS because there's no encryption it can be faster now in terms
of negatives as I've just mentioned using a smart DNS all of your traffic is
not encrypted so if you are concerned about your privacy or you want to stay
anonymous online you're not gonna get that with smart DNS on top of that it
normally does require depending on how you on top of that it
does require some manual configuration so you'll have to change your DNS
settings on your computer or your device and use your smart DNS provider so that
kind of like menu intervention can also be a bit for negative and there's
normally not application involved so you're not going to get a kill switch
which means if there is any issue with your provider potentially you could now
be accessing that content directly with your ISP which again if you are
concerned about your privacy that's gonna be a big note so lastly we have
VPN so what's the advantage of using the VPN I'll say probably the first thing is
the fact that you do get that privacy your IP address is hidden so if you do
want to stay anonymous online you definitely do get that with VPNs on top
of that you do get better security because the way the VPN works is all of
your traffic is encrypted in a secure tunnel so nobody can see what's in that
tunnel so nobody can see what you're doing so that traffic is encrypted so
VPNs do tend to be quite easy to set up so once you typed in your credentials
you can let your VPN run in the background then you know all of your
traffic is secured and you do also get the kill switch so you can configure it
if anytime your VPN drops you can get your entire connection to be shut off or
you can get certain applications to be also terminated so again if you are
concerned about running applications without a VPN with a kill switch you
can't guarantee that so in terms of negatives VPNs do tend to cost more
money than some of the other options although you can get free VPNs but I
press even recommend using that and also the performance loss so we've seen in my
previous video using a VPN you are going to lose some speed but it's also a case
of how much speed are you gonna lose and is your privacy and your security worth
that speed loss so that's really something you can answer yourself so in
some way or to say if all you want to do is just access geo restricted content
you know to fast about privacy you know to fast about security you just want to
access Netflix or BBC iPlayer or anything else that's normally region
lock then smart enos could be an option for you however if you do want the
features of smart DNS but you also want that security and that privacy that goes
with the VPN then definitely the VPN is a better option in this case so really
you have to ask yourself what do I want to do online and which option is better
for me and that's all for this video guys many thanks for
what Chang many thanks for staying to the end is well do you leave me a
comment below let me know which option works best for you and I'll hopefully
catch up with you guys real soon thanks thanks again for watching guys oh and if
you're interested in a VPN if you click on that link on the bottom left you'll
get a great 46 percent discount if you are worried about your privacy and you
want to stay safe online I do recommend you check out VPN thanks again guys see
you on the next one
