Ever wondered how to use Clock or Sync Mode? Let's talk about it.

This setting determines if the keyboard uses its own internal clock for setting the tempo of patterns, sequences or arpeggios,

or if it uses an external clock from another device.

Usually, if you're not connected to anything else MIDI,

you'll want to have this parameter set to internal clock,

so you can start sequences, patterns and ARPS when you want, and at the tempo they are stored with.

If nothing is connected to the keyboard, even though you hit the start button or trigger an arpeggio,

the keyboard will wait for an external clock to start playing, so nothing embarrassing will happen.

In the next section we'll talk about how to avoid one of the most common keyboard setting issues – Local On & Off.

Let's talk about System Settings on your keyboard

In every modern digital keyboard, there's an area of the keyboard that has very important system settings.

These affect the entire keyboard, and determine how that keyboard connects to and interacts with other gear.

It might be called Utility, Function, Global or System,

but whatever it's called on your keyboard, you should find it and get familiar with what it can do for you.

I'll show you the most important features inside some of Yamaha's keyboards.

However, our explanations will work for any brand of keyboard.

The system features we'll cover include: Tempo, Clock, local on & off, MIDI Velocity Curve and Transpose.

Episode 9: Playing Backing Tracks - Duration: 2:41.

As the keyboard player, you're often asked to do a lot more than play keyboards.

One of those things is playing back tracks.

Playing back tracks is a well-established part of modern worship, and there are many ways to do it.

1. Using analog inputs

2. Using USB Memory

3. Using computers, tablets or cell phones connected via USB

Let's start with the simplest.

An auxiliary analog input lets you connect an external playback device to your keyboard with regular audio cables,

so the audio from your external device comes out of the analog output from your keyboard.

It turns your keyboard into a small mixer.

This can be a very powerful feature when you need to control "when" playback of audio happens as part of the musical performance.

Here are a couple of tips to make this successful.

Let your sound person know that they will no longer be able to control the volume of the playback device separately from the keyboard.

It will be on the same faders as the keyboard.

Communicate with your sound person to make sure the balance is right for both keyboards and tracks.

Make sure you turn up the playback device to its maximum output.

Then adjust the gain of the aux input.

This will give you the best signal to noise performance.

On some keyboards, you can add effects like reverb and delay to the aux input.

However, when playing back tracks, make sure that no effects are applied.

There is usually a volume control, so that you can control the balance between the keyboard and the playback.

So what kinds of playback devices can you use?

Anything that has a audio output, including DVDs players, CDs players as well as smartphones, tablets and computers.

There are a lot of great smart phone and tablet apps as well as websites for downloading backing tracks of the latest worship songs.

It's amazing how much you can do with a smart phone or tablet and a small keyboard with built-in speakers for mobile, battery powered worship.

This kind of system is also helpful for small rehearsals at low volume with acoustic guitars and natural vocals.

Start thinking about ways to use Aux Inputs to improve your worship rehearsals and your services.

You may be surprised at how many interesting possibilities you come up with.

Episode 7: Transpose Your Keyboard - Duration: 1:32.

Many times in a worship band, you will suddenly be asked to play a song in a new key.

You might have a guest vocalist or your regular vocalist has a cold and can't hit the high notes.

As the keyboard player you don't have the benefit of using the capo, but you do have the ability to different pose on the keyboard.

So you can physically play the song on the original key, where able sound in a different key.

If your keyboard has a transpose button, use it to shift the keyboard up and down in half steps.

An LED will indicate if the key has been shifted.

What if you want to return to the normal transpose where C is C?

Push down both the plus and minus transpose buttons at the same time,

and the keyboard will return to its default setting.

Even if your keyboard doesn't have a transpose button,

look in the utility mode for a transpose parameter, and learn how to use it.

The utility mode, also referred to by other companies as function, Global or System Mode

– contains some of the most important, but least understood parameters on your keyboard.

Episode 6: Local On/Off - Duration: 1:46.

That's clock and sync mode, now let's take a look at Local On/Off.

All MIDI keyboards with internal sounds ship from the factory with Local turned ON,

so when you play a note on the keyboard two things happen:

1. A message is sent to an internal tone generator of the keyboard

2. A message is sent to the MIDI OUT port of the keyboard.

When you connect a computer via USB,

use a MIDI application, or the sequencer performs some processing,

the MIDI messages it receives are then sent back to your keyboard.

These messages received by the keyboard's MIDI IN port are sent to the sound generator to produce the sound.

So, if the keyboard is set to Local On mode, it would play the note twice:

Once from the local keyboard

And again from the same note received from the sequencer via MIDI IN.

There will be a slight difference in timing between these notes,

caused by the latency of sending the keyboard to the computer and then back again.

The delay is usually between 4 to 20 milliseconds, and creates a distinct flanged sound.

Not only will this sound bad,

but you are also using twice the polyphony, because every note is played twice.

The rule then is simple

– when connected via MIDI to a computer, turn Local off

In the next section we talk more about common MIDI settings that almost every keyboard shares.

Episode 8: Layering Sounds - Duration: 3:13.

Layering or blending two sounds together is an important part of worship music.

There are some classic layer combinations often used in worship

These include Piano plus Strings, Piano plus Pad and also, Organ plus Choir, besides these combinations.

It's effective to layer a percussive keyboard sound with a sound that has a slower attack and release.

Many digital pianos like the Yamaha P45 and P115 have dedicated sound buttons.

Grand Piano, Electric Piano, Pipe Organ, Strings, etc.,

along with a small selection of 8 to12 different sounds.

On products like these, it's easy to create a Layered piano and string sound.

Let's look at how to do it on a P115.

1. Press and hold a piano sound button

2. While still holding the piano sound button down, press and hold the strings sound button

3. Release both buttons and play the keyboard

It's that easy to layer sounds.

Notice that the Strings are lower in volume than the piano.

This is set as the default level, but usually can be adjusted in most keyboards.

Because these simpler products have fewer and less complex effects,

notice that the previous sound sustains even when changing to a new one.

Now let's take a look at how layering works on the MOXF8.

Other keyboards like the MOXF8 have a dedicated Layer button.

For Yamaha, these include the MOXF, MX and S Series keyboards.

If your keyboard has a layer or dual button feature, try these steps:

1. Select the primary sound you want to use, for example, Acoustic Piano.

2. Press the Layer button.

The display will show you information that will guide you in choosing the second sound you want to layer with your first sound.

3. Use your product's sound selection/navigation method to find a second desired sound.

Now you're ready to play your layered sound.

Finally, let's take a look at the PSR-S670

Some keyboards have dedicated buttons for Parts, Zones, or Layers.

These buttons are usually labeled Zone 1 thru 4, Upper 1 slash 2, Lower 1 slash 2, or Part 1 thru 4.

By turning on and off different combinations of these buttons, you can add layers to your keyboard setup.

This feature is most commonly found in arranger keyboards and more-advanced stage pianos and controllers.

Although these instructions are for "these" Yamaha keyboards,

in reality almost all keyboards use similar methods for layering.

Now let's talk about how to set tempo on your keyboard.

Tempo is the speed at which a passage of music is or should be played.

In digital keyboards, you can set tempo for every Sequence, ARP, Pattern and style played on the keyboard.

On some keyboards there's an easier way to set the Tempo.

It's called Tap Tempo, and it does just what the name says.

You tap on a button to set the Tempo, and an algorithm averages the space between the taps.

For example: the guitarist starts a song and you have to match that tempo.

Using Tap Tempo allows you to do that.

In the next section we'll talk more about how tempo works with clock settings.

Episode 10: Using Keyboards As Audio Interfaces - Duration: 1:29.

The use of computers by worship bands has really taken off in the last few years.

Mainstage and DAWs like Cubase and Ableton Live have become integral parts of a praise band's toolkit.

Connecting the computer is as simple as plugging in a USB cable.

Yamaha keyboards all work with class compliant drivers in OSX, iOS and Windows.

We also create our own drivers, which provide extended functionality of more channels and MIDI ports.

Let's check out a few of the things we can do after we connect our keyboard to a computer.

Once you have the audio from the computer digitally mixed with the sound from your keyboard,

you can output via Yamaha's high quality digital to analog convertors, and send this to the Audio Outputs of the keyboard.

You also have direct control of the overall volume,

and the volume and balance between the computer and keyboard.

This really simplifies the setup with the computer, and makes one integrated system where you have direct control.

Along with audio control,

many Yamaha keyboards work as hands- on control of the DAW itself via software integration.

They would be perfectly willing to sacrifice an American life in the name of looking good

in the eyes of misinformed voters.

It is truly disturbing.

If you want to know just how uncomfortable the left is with full disclosure, just look

at their reactions to Wikileaks dump of information on Hillary's email server scandal.

They LOST IT.

We had political hacks all over TV telling us we couldn't read Hillary's emails because

they were illegal.

However, the media were allowed to read the emails, and they reported lies and nothing

of practical use to us.

That left a bad taste in our mouths.

We thought transparency was something that was good for our country.

Apparently, the left disagrees.

Our country stands to benefit from free and transparent governing and reporting.

The Trump administration has been extremely transparent and effective.

President Trump doesn't rely on underhanded media manipulation tactics like the Obama

administration did.

We NEED this kind of transparency in our offices.

We cannot be expected to vote and make educated political choices without being properly informed.

It's almost like the left doesn't want us to see what they're hiding.

Republican leaders on Capitol Hill have questions about the Iran deal, and have very good reason

to believe we've been lied to.

In a letter to Jeff Sessions jointly drafted by 13 Republican Senators, the Senators penned,

"We write to request your assistance in providing Congress with more information regarding

the Obama Administration's decision" to drop the charges or convictions in the 21

(Iran deal) cases," via Allsides.

That is a VERY troubling problem.

It stands to reason these Senators know they're onto something, otherwise they wouldn't

be pooling their resources together to track down this information.

We're going to be in great shape once they get a hold of that information and show us

the truth.

According to Breitbart, Rep. William Lacy Clay (D-MO), was recently busted paying his

sister's law firm to the tune of $80,000 over the past year alone.

The problem with this?

Clay was using his campaign funds to make his sister filthy rich for a LONG time.

Information regarding Clay's campaign finances for the second-quarter reveals that a significant

amount of cash was paid out to, none other than, the Law Office of Michelle C. Clay,

LLC.

The reports showing his finances came directly from The Washington Free Beacon and can be

seen here.

There is no disputing that there is some funny business going on here.

There isn't a reason in the world to make payouts to a sibling's law firm unless you

are, pretty much, handing them money for the sake the doing it.

Michelle received a total of $18,100 in April ALONE.

On the memos, there are things written such as "fundraising, community organizing, and

record keeping."

None of that sounds very "lawyerly" to us.

Record keeping MIGHT be a stretch.

In both May and June, another $18,000 was paid out to the firm for each month.

Who knew that "record keeping" was so expensive?!

When you break down the first quarter expenses that went to the firm, there is a running

total of $27,000.

Either Clay is paying over $100,000 a year for his sister to keep his records, or he

is lining her pockets.

Knowing the Dems, which do you think is more likely?

The real damage is in the numbers.

There was a TOTAL of $115,000 spent from Clay's campaign fund since the start of the new year.

In that time, a whopping 70% of all money spent went to Michelle's firm.

We were born in the morning, but certainly not THIS morning.

A running number was figured from the time that Clay first started paying his sister

with campaign funds in 2002.

It was discovered that a jaw-dropping $800,000 had been paid to the firm from 2002 until

right now.

It is no wonder why the Left cannot be trusted.

They are in it for themselves and to benefit their family members.

These Democrats don't care about the American people.

As long as they get a chance to line their own pockets, they will do whatever it takes

to get people to keep funneling the money.

Lie, cheat, and steal–sounds like a Democrat to us.

We need a full investigation to see what is happening with these funds and learn WHY all

of this money was sent to Michelle Clay.

Something tells us that the only record keeping they have going on is figuring out how much

money they have managed to swindle right from under people's noses.

Speaking about the alleged use of an informant to spy on Trump's campaign during the Russia

investigation, Nunes told Fox Nunes on Saturday "what could be even worse is if there were

informants that were being run into [the] Trump campaign and their associates" before

July 31 — the known start of inquiry.

While Nunes, in his capacity as intelligence chairman, has sought information related to

the genesis of the investigation, and recently has referred dozens of names to his counterparts

in the Judiciary and Oversight Committees to use their task force to expand the inquiry,

the Justice Department has been resistant to fulfill all his demands.

Nunes said this clash could end if Trump got involved and declassify "pertinent parts"

of a Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act warrant used to spy on onetime Trump campaign

aide Carter Page.

The DOJ and FBI first obtained a warrant to conduct surveillance on Page in October 2016.

The warrant was subsequently renewed three times at 90-day intervals.

"The president of the United States is going to have to declassify all this information

so the American public knows exactly what the counter intelligence resources that we

have in this country — what they were used for," Nunes said.

Correct.

The whole thing stinks to high heaven and with the revelation of the bombshell texts,

how is America to trust the whole story?

Hillary was a terrible candidate and unless there is an absolute smoking gun, and if there

is Mueller needs to come clean and show us, the witch hunt is over.
