Do you want to know how to grow a carrot in a container in this video I'm going to
show you how simple and easy it is to just plant carrots in a small container
hello gardeners this is Jeremy Starke here from green thumb gardening here to
give you some tips tutorials and reviews for all your gardening needs today I'm
gonna go over a very simple and easy way to grow carrots in a container and this
is perfect for anyone that is challenged for space if you you know if you do have
another garden and you've already plant everything else in you you just want to
have some carrots this is a really simple way to to get some carrots
growing can just grab a container you pick it up at Walmart Amazon you know
I'll put some links down we can get a container in the size of it below as
always if you find the content that we have here on our channel helpful for you
please give us a green thumbs up below and smash that like button and let us
know that we're doing a good job for you I'm also if you if you do like the
content that we have please also subscribe below hit the bell when you do
subscribe so that you do get the notifications when we do have a new
video to the post now let me get that out of the way let's let's get right
into what you need to do to get started with growing some carrots and a bucket
the things that you're actually going to need is obviously a bucket now as far as
the size of it you want to have I like to have at least a foot because that
gives it enough depend on the variety of carrots that you have the size of it
it's gonna give it enough to to actually grow and then the roots are gonna come
down to now because it's in a container there's gonna be you know a lot of roots
on the bottom here so you just want to make sure that you have at least a foot
maybe even more I'm just gonna try it in this see how it is I mean I have some
other larger containers that might be ideal so I mean if you're if you're
looking at to maximize it maybe a little bit bigger than this but I'm trying to
do this you know some things in gardening is uh you know experimentation
so I'm gonna do it in this in this particular container right here I think
I paid like 3 or 4 bucks for it at the store the other thing that you're gonna
need is is obviously some garden soil my garden soil mix I have some organic
potting soil that I got from from you know Home Depot and then I add in a
little peat moss and then I also have some worm composting that you know that
I do add for my warm bin so if you interesting worm composting I do have a
video that I'll post a link up to it as well if you want to see that one of the
crucial steps that you need to do when you're when you're getting this ready to
you know to plant is that your dirt your compost your soil does not have any
obstructions in it like twigs you know little rocks you know things like that
in there you want to have it pretty well sifted it's just one of those medium
it's just one of those vegetables that you have to have it like that otherwise
what will happen is the carrots will still grow but they'll be like some
funky shapes so they might be dwarfed or you know some weird shapes and hey I'm
sure if you if you do a search run you can see you know some funny ones that do
grow with that so what I do is you know for this one I get a just a sifter this
is my daughter's of Sand sifter it actually works very well it's got enough
the holes in here but it does take a little process to get all the the the
materials out there so what I did is I just measured I put enough soil in here
put it all in my wheelbarrow and then what I'm gonna do right now is I'm just
gonna sift through all this
and as I said before the reason the reason why you want to make sure that
you sift through the the dirt that using the compost is you want to make sure
there's no obstructions in there because like I said the the carrot is a root
vegetable that is gonna go down so you can get some you know some funky carrots
if if you kind of miss this step so if you're okay with that you know then just
you know you can pretty much do it but just expect that the carrots may may be
a little deformed when they when you pull them all plus they might also stunt
as well because if they don't go down then they have some obstruction they're
not gonna grow as down as as far as you want to so for the for the variety of
carrots that that i'm gonna plant they're the scarlet scarlet nan teas
they grow i believe about 6 to 7 inches so when you're you know that just keep
that in mind when you have your container this one is about a foot so
what I did is anything that I screamed out of here
I just put I lay at the bottom of this just the first inch or two with that
material but I would have just put that material back into your compost pile or
just in your garden where you don't have to be concerned with it you know once
you get it nice and sifted through you know begin the next step we're gonna be
filling up the container here what I'll do to this thing took me forever if you
didn't see there are some other sifters that you can buy and I'll put a link in
the description below if you want to see you know some other ones that you can
use let's get started with that so as I said you want to take your container and
you can fill it on the bottom if you didn't do this part you can fill with
just a little bit of kind of grainy more dirt or whatever because what they'll do
is that will actually they'll actually allow you to you know to kind of use
that materials up in there so you can just have it so that it's you know right
at the bottom there the next step is what we're gonna do is we're actually
gonna also put some some nutrients into this so into the soil now I actually mix
this up with with some compost so I did have some vermicompost for my worm my
worm bins and what I did is I mixed it up in here so that it does have the
nutrients and things for it after you sifted through all you
all your your dirt to make sure that it does have is fine to this wheelbarrow
I'm gonna add some additional amendments for this so first amendment that I'm
gonna do is is bone meal so organic bone meal now I mean you
don't need this particular brand but you can find them you know anywhere and what
I do is I just basically I'm not very scientific when it comes to these things
but you know I'll do maybe about a handful and I just kind of sprinkle it
in maybe a handful and a half okay and the certain so that was the blood meal
I'm sorry if I call it the bone meal the next one is the next one is the bone
meal and basically you're also gonna do the same for this now the thing about
containers when you're when you're actually you know all the containers you
know you can still do some additions to it as they grow but I find that it's
it's really good to get it in there you know beforehand too because it's just
easier it's just easier to mix everything up now and not have to be
concerned too much about it then when you're when you're actually growing them
but there's there's also some other soluble fertilizers that I do use at the
during some intervals of it to help it grow as well because you know once the
this stuff is gonna take some time to break down in the soil so as the plants
growing it's gonna be breaking down in the soil so it does have some time to
you know to kind of get ready for it so when the when the plan is is actually
looking for those nutrients and the the roots go down they're gonna be available
at that time but this is one of those things that you do ahead of time you are
gonna maximize your results with with it I kind of just mix everything around one
of the other things I do add a little bit of is also epson salt I don't add
too much but you know it just does anytime that I'm doing some kind of new
additions I add just a little bit in
we're gonna go ahead and put everything in the pot now so when you're putting in
just you just want to make sure you leave a little bit you're gonna leave
some I mean you should maybe measure it out before you do this so you know that
how much it have in here when you do the seeds you're gonna put it in and then
we're gonna put some more dirt on top of that try to do this very easy I'm not
really gonna get too complicated with with the whole procedure
one thing about gardening is that it I mean I did I enjoy about it is that it's
just it's just one of those things when you just get in there and just get in
the dirt and just get dirty and that's what it's all about I mean I don't know
about you but when I was a kid I used to always play in the dirt and this kind of
makes you feel like a kid again you know I fill this up like I said I'm gonna
leave probably about a quarter put in there cuz you want to maximize the space
in here you know so you want to try to have use up as much space as you can in
here and allow yourself a lot of plant to be able to to grow and I actually
might get a little more dirt for the top of this but so now we can at least get
the seeds seeds plants in here
you know and you know like I said the gardening is just one of those things
like you just kind of just experiment as you go along you know see what works for
you try out new different things just experiment explore I mean the worst that
could happen if something doesn't grow and that's that's not so bad
as you can see it's filled up there's probably about an inch half inch left
from the from the container itself so what I'm gonna do now is I kind of just
Pat it down and then I actually why do i do like to water it a little bit cuz
what happens is um you know the soil he'll just kind of you want it wet that
so the seeds will actually have a good chance to germinate here but I like to
do it before I actually plant because sometimes the water just kind of pulls
up in there so I give it a nice good watering and just kind of let it soak in
a little bit a little mud pie anybody if you have any kids or anything but I
should I remember making those little mud pies they did you kind of fold it
over and make like a little castle or something okay so now that you have that
that L situated in there the next step now this this this next step you know
there's so there's so many different ways that you can do this I found that
it's easy just to get some kind of like some kind of grid material that that you
can use to kind of figure out where it is because they're supposed to be I
think I think three inches apart you know cuz you think of the carrot it was
my little pretend carrier I mean you think of the carrot I mean this is a
pretty good sized carrot you know both three inches so you kind of want you
kind of want it so that it has enough enough space in there for that you know
this is kind of just a rough rough outline but what I do is I just I mean I
really don't get too too technical but I just kind of press it in so what kind of
leaves a little imprint in here I mean it's it's so it could be a little hard
to see but the other thing you can do is which actually I might just do is if you
get a stick and then you use the grid and you just kind of push down right in
the center of the the grid so and what this does is that this
just kind of lays out where you're gonna put your seeds you know so difficult
when you're doing it because that's usually the hard part I prefer to do
this to some other methods because it's just easy I don't have to thin it which
if you don't know what the thinning means it means that when the plants are
growing you're gonna basically pick out that are kind of crowding it and the
reason behind that is you don't want to have too many plants competing for the
same you know nutrients and things like that that kind of crowds them out gets
them out of there so that you know you can do it but you know like I said with
gardening it's just one of those things that there's no you know I think of it
like you know like baking and cooking you know where you know you could be
creative with baking of course but it's you know it's pretty exact you know what
some of the measurements to make a cake I mean you have to have the certain
ingredients and you know everything has to be a certain way but we're cooking
you can kind of let go a little - to that little - to this I think of that
like kind of like gardening you know gardening I could just you know you can
be baking wise about it or you can be cooking wise you know it's kind of
flexible but I'm more of a cook you know I sort of speak so I like to just just
kind of go along and see what happens and just you know it doesn't work out
then I just change it around the next time but it's still good to have some
kind of framework to go by and that's why I love you know kind of showing
people how to do this stuff because at least it gives you some kind of
inspiration and something to go by because sometimes you just need it I
mean I go on and I look at different videos and and everything as well just
to get inspiration from you know those in the gardening community all right so
once you get all your holes kind of poked out where you want them the next
step is to is to actually get the the seeds for this so now as I said you
don't have to use these these are the scarlet and auntie's the scarlet and
Auntie e carrots and some people like to get the pelleted ones which are like
easier to put in the and the planting holes this I don't even know I can't
remember which ones these are though these are the actual seeds so these are
not pelleted so the pelleted ones you'll see they're like a little ball and they
just have some kind of dissolvable you know some kind of dissolvable nutrient
around the seed itself and you know does just when you put it in
why the soil it starts to go away so the sea can form but this is just a regular
seed non pelleted so if they're very small so don't be don't be surprised you
know if you put a couple in each hole it's fine you know just to get just to
get started so so I'm gonna do is put it in each hole right here I'm gonna I
usually put maybe two and I know it's kind of one of those things where you
don't want to thin it out but it's just easier than just throwing it in like
five or six you know and because sometimes these seeds might not they
might not all grow so I just put and go up and down the little row here all
right so once I get up once I get these all all you know in here the next step
that I do is I take the the rest of the sifted compost and dirt that I have in
here and you know this is why it's really important to sift it because you
know like I said the first the first couple inches of the the growth of it is
going to be where it's gonna really focus on but this the top part is not
really so so much it's really this this the first batch that you do the soil
under there because it's obviously gonna go down but it's still you know you
still want to just you know do it that way as well so then I just take I just
take a little of the sifted compost on here and I just put it on the top we're
gonna we're gonna press this down afterwards okay all right so once you
get that you know then I just I just want to press this down because you want
to you want to have the seeds covered but you want to give them a chance to be
able to come out so as you can see it's all the the
actual seeds are covered I know you can't really see it but the all the
seeds are covered in here so all you have to do at this point really is it's
just giving it some watering and just give it a nice good watering you know
and if you pack that dirt down it doesn't matter if it's gonna splash over
a little bit but you don't have to water as much because you already got the the
bottom of it so that's it folks that's really all you need to do when you're
first you know when you're planting uh you know you carrots in in a container
so what I'll do is I will I'm actually gonna post right up in the core below
I'm gonna have some updates on this particular bucket right here as it grows
so you can see the progress of it and what it looks in the next step because I
probably I will have to thin some of these a little bit so what I'll do is I
will I'll let you I'll show you exactly how I fin the carrots to make sure that
they're not overcrowding and everything but it's pretty simple to do and I'll
show you that in the next video so please subscribe if you haven't
subscribed to our channel also give us a green thumbs up if you do find this
helpful for you and you want to see more content like this well that's it for
today and I'll see you guys in the next video
