Learning English here is fun, I think, for them.
They can walk outside and it's dynamic,
but at the same time I think they also walk outside and see
the multicultural city that New York is. And I think it's inspiring
and I can see why it would be, you know,
where they can walk outside and see people from all corners of the world
and say, "Wow look at them existing here and being
New Yorkers and maybe I will one day or
at least I will be able to communicate with them
and other Americans". So
you know, it's a very exciting place.
I like meeting people from all over the world,
It's a big perk. My classroom is always changing
and so I get to meet cool people
who've done cool things and my Facebook is huge now,
I have tons of friends around the world.
And so it's cool in that way, I get to
experience the world by just being here for a little bit
so it is a huge perk for me.
I've done a few things where I take them out.
I take them to Bryant Park occasionally,
have them interview strangers in the park and
they're always scared about it and then they're always
the best classes. Afterwards they always have
questions about just like the everyday language that we use.
I remember the last thing that a student told me,
they asked "Oh you can catch a train?" and I was like
"Yeah that person didn't want to speak to you because
they had to catch a train".
And so, they are learning these kind of things
that are sometimes not in the books
and sometimes it's only outside of the
classroom that they can experience
those like real interactions. So
being right here in the middle
gives me the opportunity to do that. So
I'm in the middle of the city and I try to use it
whenever possible.
