USA news on Youtube Oct 23 2018

My Name is Sugiyama Masahiko from Nagaragawa Gifu.

I am following in the steps of my ancestors who have been doing this job since 1300.

My job is to be an Ukai cormorant fisherman.

The Ukai cormorant fishing technique is almost the same since the beginning of time.

We are fishing for Ayu fish on the Nagara river from mid April until mid October in order to protect Ayu fish and the river's overall ecosystem.

Cormorant are very important for us and we take care of them all year long.

Every fish we catch are sold at local ryokan and hotels.

The boat we use to fish can carry three people including the fisherman, one helper and someone to steer the boat.

There are no less than six fishing boats operating on the river all year long and every night during the season.

Ukai is a traditional fishing method using trained cormorants to catch river fish such as Ayu also known as sweetfish.

Ukai cormorant fishing has been around for over 1300 years, most prominently along the Nagaragawa River in Gifu City, where in the past the master fishermen have official patronage from the emperor,

today however all Ayu catch are sold to surrounding hotels and ryokan.

Ukai cormorant fishing includes one master fisherman, one helper and one person to steer the boat as well as around 12 cormorant birds

swimming alongside the boat are catching fish attracted by the boat light.

The catch are kept in a special pouch in the cormorant's throat and retrieved later.

To prevent cormorant from swallowing their large catch

fisherman put a snare around the neck of the bird while still allowing the cormorant eat smaller fish.

Despite some common misunderstanding, cormorant are extremely well treated and valuable to fishermen,

no arm to the cormorant is done at any time.

Lewis Hamilton: Daniel Ricciardo aims Sebastian Vettel jibe at US Grand Prix - Duration: 2:12.

Lewis Hamilton: Daniel Ricciardo aims Sebastian Vettel jibe at US Grand Prix Hamilton can win his fifth world title at the US Grand Prix tonight if he finishes eight points above Vettel. The Brit will start on pole position while his Ferrari rival is fifth - one place behind Ricciardo. And the Red Bull man has rubbed salt into the wounds of Vettel by claiming Ferrari have had a stronger car than Mercedes this term.

That makes it even more surprising that Hamilton is able to wrap up the Drivers' Championship with three races to spare.     "Seb, for the most part, has had a fast car all year. "But when you're fighting for the title it's those little one percenters that Lewis has got on top of more often than him and that's really what's dictated the pace of the Championship now.

"I give Lewis full respect - the talent's always been there, the speed's always been there, everyone knows that. "But for him to maintain this level of intensity, this level of speed and commitment is pretty strong. I certainly have no problem with applauding him on that, he deserves it.     "He deserves that this year 100 per cent." Ricciardo also claimed he would be able to beat Hamilton if he was given a similar car.

"Certainly my competitive side will always believe that I'm the best and that in that car I can do the same thing, yadda-ya," he said.   "But I definitely give him all the respect and it's definitely not a go at Lewis. "I think he's been pretty awesome at being able to do what he's done continuously on track for the best part of a decade but also done his own thing away from the track. "For him to live the life he's living but still keep up such a performance, all credit to him.".

Lewis Hamilton made to wait for fifth world title after dramatic US Grand Prix - Duration: 4:05.

Lewis Hamilton made to wait for fifth world title after dramatic US Grand Prix Kimi Raikkonen won an intense battle against his Mercedes rival in one of the races of the season as his one-stop strategy ensured he kept team-mate Sebastian Vettel's slim title hopes alive. Max Vertsappen produced the drive of the day as he fought his way from 18th on the grid to finish second. Hamilton lost his pole position on the opening lap and after a turbulent race could only secure the final podium place.

He now needs to finish five points above Vettel at the Mexican Grand Prix next weekend to secure the title. Meanwhile, Vettel, who started in fifth place, collided with Daniel Ricciardo on the first lap and span to the back of the field but he fought his way back to a fourth-placed finish after a dramatic late overlap of Valtteri Bottas.     At the same time, Hamilton had three bites at overtaking Verstappen at the death but the Dutchman defended magnificently to make the Brit wait another week to equal Juan Manuel Fangio's record.

Hamilton was evidently disappointed with wasting his pole position but he will have a chance to complete the job at the Mexican Grand Prix next weekend. "Naturally I thought we would be able to do better but this is the best we were able to do in the end," Hamilton said. "We just have to keep working and keep pushing for the next race. "After my first stop, 12 seconds was way too far to catch up. I'm not really quite sure how the strategy ended up like that.

"A big congratulations to Kimi, he did a great job with no mistakes. He had a great start and managed to go all the way. "Max did a great job too, he was on a better tyre than us at the end, so naturally a bit of a struggle for us but it was the best we could do in the end. At least we could have a good race. But we'll leave it until next weekend. "I came out ahead in the pit, but the window was closed and it was way too far to come back from.

I don't know how our strategy ended up like that, and you only have a short time to do a fast lap on new tyres and I missed it. "Ferrari picked up their pace this weekend, so I look forward to the next race." Meanwhile, race winner Raikkonen celebrated his first victory since the 2013 Australian Grand Prix. And he explained how the perfect start set him on his way to a memorable evening. "Maybe they (the fans) are happier, it's been a great weekend, the car has been good all the time," he said.

"I got a good start and I ended to push hard and the tyres were not in their best shape towards the end.   "Max had the same problem and Lewis but we had enough speed and kept it consistent. I'm much happier here than finishing in second but I'm happy. "It was obviously coming in at the right time and having enough tyres, so it was a balancing act but we did it well, well enough to win and good." And Verstappen expressed his surprise at coming from 18th on the grid to finish second.

"A bit unexpected, a good start, good first lap very quickly we were into P5 then we could follow the leaders," he said. "We were really struggling with the rear tyres, it was a good fight. I was pushing as much as I could, but clearly Lewis was on the edge too.".
