Did you hear Raikkonen EPICALLY troll Hamilton after US Grand Prix win? This is BRILLIANT Raikkonen overtook Hamilton on the opening lap in Austin and went on to secure his first race win since 2013. Hamilton could only manage a third-place finish behind Red Bull's Max Verstappen. Meanwhile Raikkonen's Ferrari team-mate Sebastian Vettel came fourth behind Hamilton. The result means the Mercedes driver will have to wait a little longer to secure his fifth world title having failed to score eight points more than Vettel in Austin.

And Raikkonen couldn't resist making a dig at Hamilton after the race. As Hamilton, Raikkonen and Verstappen all gathered in the cool down room ahead of the podium ceremony, the Finn said: "Did you win the championship?" "No," was Hamilton's short response. The Brit came up short in his mission to win his fifth world title after losing track position when Mercedes elected to move him on to a two-stop tyre strategy.

The only lead driver on a two-stop tyre strategy at the Circuit of the Americas, Hamilton emerged from the pits for a second time 12 seconds behind Raikkonen, and 10 seconds down on Verstappen, with 19 laps remaining. The rampant Briton delivered fastest lap after fastest lap to reel in both the Ferrari and Red Bull cars and with eight laps to go, the top three were covered by a little more than two seconds. Hamilton could smell championship glory and went wheel-to-wheel with Verstappen in a dramatic finale, but the Dutchman held firm to retain the position.

At that stage, had Hamilton overtaken Verstappen, second would have been enough for Hamilton to take the championship, but Vettel fought his way past Bottas, meaning the Brith would have then required to get past race winner, Raikkonen, too. But the Finn held on and took his first victory in 113 races. Hamilton is now 70 points ahead of Vettel with 75 remaining so the championship battle will now go on to Mexico next Sunday. "I thought we would have been able to do better today but it was great that we got to do some racing," Hamilton said. "I am not sure how the strategy ended up like that. Ferrari picked up their game, and we need to push hard at the next race.".

Lewis Hamilton has US Grand Prix SCARE as water leak strikes hours before race - Duration: 2:51.

Lewis Hamilton has US Grand Prix SCARE as water leak strikes hours before race Hamilton can win his fifth world title in Austin tonight but his celebrations could have been postponed had mechanics not spotted the malfunction early. The Silver Arrows confirmed they needed to change the water pumps on both vehicles.

Both pumps were fresh for the US Grand Prix but they will be replaced by "old, proven pumps of the same spec." Mercedes will not want to take any chances as Hamilton is on the verge of equaling Juan Manuel Fangio's World Championship record. With his car now intact, Hamilton will start the US Grand Prix in pole position after coming out on top in qualifying. And the Brit is hoping to take advantage of Vettel's three-place grid penalty by wrapping up the Championship.

"They were obviously very quick," Hamilton said after qualifying. "This weekend, we're pretty much on a par performance-wise.     "As Seb [Vettel] said, they've gone back on some of their potential updates and the car is better in the sweet spot and for us, we've not brought updates here so we're on max downforce level here. "That's great to see us so close and still I'm hopeful for the future to have more teams, more qualifyings like that, that are closer, but with more cars involved.

"That's got to be the ultimate goal for Formula One." Meanwhile, Vettel is confident he will have the pace to catch Hamilton come lights out.   "It was pretty close. Always a bit of a shame when you miss out on that little time. I think six-hundredths, you can always debate that you had them somewhere in you," he said. "I was pretty happy with the laps I had. I think it was quite tricky to get everything together.

Obviously it's been dry today and better for us but I think the wind was quite tricky at times, but it was the same for everyone. "Pretty happy given the last couple of weeks that we've had. Pretty happy that we're back in range. Yeah, it seems that we are [back in form]. "Not in the wet but in the dry, it seems that we're better off. I think today has been surprisingly close, I don't think we expected it to be that close so it's good.".

Sebastian Vettel grid penalty: Why did F1 star get penalised at US Grand Prix? - Duration: 3:25.

Sebastian Vettel grid penalty: Why did F1 star get penalised at US Grand Prix? Vettel's chances of keeping his world championship hopes alive took a huge blow in practice as he looks to keep pace with Lewis Hamilton. can win his fifth world title in Austin tonight by finishing eight points above the Ferrari driver. Vettel will have to start from fifth on the grid after being hit with a three-place grid penalty and Express Sport is on hand to explain exactly what happened.

UPDATES: LEWIS HAMILTON GOES FOR FIFTH WORLD TITLE   Why has Vettel been given a grid penalty? Vettel was slapped with a three-place grid penalty for speeding during a red flag in practice. The German was summoned to the stewards for not responding appropriately to a red flag period in the opening practice session at Austin on Friday. Practice One was interrupted by a red flag when Charles Leclerc spun his Sauber and rejoined the track by going through the gravel that led to stones being scattered onto the track.

Red flags were thrown but the stewards deemed Vettel did not slow down enough between marshalling sectors six and seven. Was it the right decision to hand Vettel a grid penalty? Sky F1 analyst Paul Di Resta, who drove for Williams last season, sympathised with Vettel's demotion. "This year there's a new hard rule and the drivers have got a certain amount of time to slow up," explained Di Resta.

"The FIA say you've got two 'zones' to get to that speed, but if you're at the end of the first zone, you've got less time because you're going to get to the end of the second zone quicker. That's where it's difficult. "I feel for the drivers. Vettel slowed, it's just whether that delta is a bit too quick. When I look at that from a driver's point of view, I would say that is definitely slow enough and he's taken the appropriate action.

"Yes, it's safety critical, but he slowed sufficiently for a Formula 1 car. As soon as he saw the red lights, he reduced his speed. "All the drivers will be on Vettel's side on this. The rule needs changing. It needs to be tweaked."   Red Bull team boss Christian Horner added: "It's not a good regulation and it's not a good penalty.

"We're over-regulated as a sport as it is." Mercedes chief Toto Wollf gave his verdict, saying: "For the championship obviously it's not good if Sebastian gets a penalty, we would obviously want him there and put on a good show. "I think we need to talk about it. The safety of the stewards and of a car that's in the barrier is super important but we need to look at the regulations because we want to get rid of the penalties. "Merging those two is not a trivial thing.".
