Apparently it's time to fill up.
Hello everybody, and welcome back
to a new episode of Ticket to Florida.
This video is the fourth in my video series: Driving in the USA.
Today's topic is refueling
A simple topic certainly. Nevertheless an important one.
When you travel through the USA, you absolutely need a car,
and at some point you will need to fill up.
But how does one refuel in the USA?
Is it different than in Germany?
For example, do you pay before or after you refuel?
Do you pay cash or with a card?
Do you go to the cashier, or do you pay at the pump?
And just what are the gas prices in the USA?
In this video, I'll answer these questions,
and I'll show you how one refuels in the USA. Let's go!
First, I'll speak to the topic of gas prices.
In the USA, we use dollars per gallon instead of euros per liter.
Here you see a screenshot from the website
of the American Automobile Association
or Triple A as we say here.
AAA is similar to the ADAC in Germany.
According to the screenshot
the nationwide average gas price on July 9 was $2.86.
On the same day, the average price in Florida was $2.72.
In Pinellas County, where I live, it was $2.63.
But how does one express this price in euros per liter?
Let's look at an example.
Here is a hypothetical price sign of an American gas station.
The sign shows three variations of gas: Regular, Plus, und Diesel.
Regular here means 87 Octane,
and this variation suffices in most cases.
I've never refueled with Plus.
That is a waste of money.
The prices are expressed in dollars per gallon.
Here are the same prices translated into euros per liter.
You can clearly see that gas in the USA
is much cheaper in comparison to Germany.
So, how much does it cost to fill up in the USA?
Naturally it depend on the model of car.
I own a Toyota Corolla.
The tank size of the Toyota is 13.2 gallons.
With a gas price of $2.63, it costs $34.85
or 29,62€ to fill up.
This price assumes an exchange rate of 0.85 euro per dollar.
The dollar is weak, and this is a great advantage for you.
Here is another example.
The Hyundai Santa Fe has a larger tank, 18.8 gallons.
Cost to fill up: $49.63 or 42,19€.
My last example is the Ford Expedition.
Tank size: 23.3 gallons.
Cost to fill up: $61.51 or 52,28€.
Now let's look for a gas station.
I'll show you how one refuels in the USA.
A small piece of advice.
At the airport when you pick up the rental car,
pay attention to which side the fuel cap is on.
You'll spare yourself a lot of irritation later when you go to the gas station.
Trust me!
This here is a typical fuel pump at an American gas station.
It has two nozzles, one for diesel and one for unleaded.
This pumps offers three variations of unleaded:
87 octane, 89, and 93.
As I already said, I recommend 87
unless your rental car absolutely requires 89 or 93.
This pump has an machine for credit and debit card payment.
It has a monitor and a display
with the amount in dollars and gallons.
At German gas stations,
you generally don't pay until after you've refueled.
In the USA, it's different.
You have to pay before you refuel.
You have two options.
You can go into the shop to the cashier,
or you can pay at the pump.
Paying at the pump is more common
because most of the pumps have machines for credit and debit cards.
It's important however that you have a card
that works in the USA.
In general, EC cards do not work in the USA.
Therefore, I recommend to everyone who travels in America
to get a credit card.
So, how does one refuel in the USA with a card?
I'll show you.
I put my card in.
Is it a debit card? No.
Rewards? No.
The pump asks for my zip code.
That is a security question.
Car wash? No.
I want 87.
And I refuel.
Now I'll show you a trick.
Many fuel nozzles have a small lever
with which you can refuel automatically.
Then you don't need to hold the fuel nozzle the entire time.
It turns off as soon as the tank is full.
Ingenious no?
The tank is now full.
I press on the monitor for the receipt.
I have to go to the cashier.
It's that simple.
If you decide to pay at the cashier,
say the number of the pump and the desired amount.
For example: Can I have $30 on Pump 8?
Can I get $30 on Pump 8?
Debit or credit?
Credit.
Give it a swipe.
Could I have you sign this for me please?
Thanks. You have a nice day. You too.
Hmm. I paid $30,
but the tank is already full at $14.10.
Is that a problem?
No. That is not a problem.
I simply press on the monitor for a new receipt
with the correct amount.
But a bit of advice: keep both.
A questions.
Why would one go into the shop
when it is so much more practical to pay at the pump?
One word: Skimmers.
Skimmers are illegal card reader devices
that are secretly hidden in the machines by criminals.
These devices can snatch credit card data and the PIN number
off the magnetic stripe
without you knowing it.
There is only one one hundred percent protection:
that you go into the shop and pay at the cashier.
That was refueling in the USA.
I hope this video was informative.
My goal is to give you tips
so that you can relax
when you are on vacation in Florida.
Speaking of vacation,
my family and I are going on vacation in the next several days.
We're flying to San Diego.
Therefore, there will be no video in August.
In September, I'll return with a new video
OK? Thanks for watching and until September.
Bye!
