Fox News Alert president Trump's former personal attorney Michael Cohen saying
he's putting family and country first in an interview with ABC his first since
FBI raided his office apartment and hotel room back in April Cohen was
payment to adult film star star Lee Daniels has been under scrutiny by
special counsel robert muller tweeting this spent Saturday afternoon with G
Stephanopoulos ABC not on camera interview for Monday's GMA my silence is
broken war Engel has more from our New York bureau Laura hi Melissa well
president Trump's so-called fixer has been silent for months as we know
refusing to talk about the FBI rate of his properties but his silence ended
this weekend inside a New York hotel room where he sat down with ABC's George
Stephanopoulos as you mentioned he talked off camera for about 45 minutes
and they got to a lot and one of the big topics Cohen's loyalty to the president
something that he has consistently stood his ground on in the past even telling
people he would take a bullet to protect his longtime former client but here is
what Cohen told Stephanopoulos Saturday one of the big questions I asked him is
what will you do if prosecutors come to you and offer you leniency in return for
information on president sharp now he said he wanted a person respect the
process didn't get into specifics but he added this and he added this with
emphasis my wife my daughter and my son have my first loyalty and always will I
put family and country first Stephanopoulos says he also asked Cohen
what he would do if the president and his legal team were to go after him and
challenge his credibility Stephanopoulos says Owen said this I will not be a
punching bag as part of anyone's defense strategy I am NOT a villain in any story
and won't allow others to try to depict me that way and then there was the
$130,000 question what about that big payment he made to Stephanie Clifford or
stormy Daniels when Cohen was asked if President Trump knew about the payment
he made to keep Daniels quiet about this alleged sexual encounter she claims
she had with mr. Trump in 2006 he told Stephanopoulos I want to answer one day
I will answer he said but for now I can't comment further on advice of my
counsel Daniels lawyer Michael avenatti has responded to the interview and
tweeted this mr. Cohen is trying to get Trump to pay his legal bills and is
playing games if he has info and truly loves this country then he needs to come
forward now there is nothing stopping him if not it will be obvious he lied to
the public in an effort to paint himself as a good guy Cohen also asked about the
FBI and the Robert Miller investigation he said he doesn't like the term
witch-hunt and doesn't agree with those who demonize or vilify the FBI Melissa
woo thank you for that all right a lot to chew on there one well you know so
interesting to me to hear from Stephanopoulos that what Cohen says is
you know I'm not sure about where this is going and I'm not I I would talk but
I can't talk and then to hear avenatti come back and say it's all about Cohen
trying to get Trump to pay his legal bills I thought we were way past that I
didn't think that was possible I mean I was having a conversation with Abby
about is Cohen aware that Trump has the power to pardon people I would think
that could be a bigger influence he's doing everything but wearing a sandwich
board as Kris tire weld said pardon me pardon me pardon me I mean everything
short of that right so sure I read the transcript when I woke up this morning
and all I could visualize in my head was a Michael Cohen in the middle of the
ocean with his hands just reaching out anyone please come save me please come
get me clearly he's sending a message he knows that he could be in big trouble
and saying that he wants to do everything he can to protect his kids
and protect his wife I read that as he's willing turn if he has to who knows how
this plays out but I will say when he answered the questions about the FBI and
about Russian meddling in the election if you read it carefully everything he
said actually goes against the way the president has spoken about the FBI and
about this Russian meddling so if there's a sense of what impacting this
is what Brit Hume had to say about that very issue the tone of what he was
saying listen he's in a hot water and he doesn't want to offend the
prosecutors who were investigating it so he is apparently prepared to cooperate
well that's what people do now I'm not saying and when all is said and done
that he may not tell them something that would be in some way damaging the
President Trump but we don't know exactly what that is so he seems to be
creating some daylight between himself and the decision-makers on whether or
not who's gonna pull him out of the drown in the ocean right go under we
who's gonna relieve him of the sandwich board and just go ahead and buy a whole
smorgasbord but but certainly where we are right now is if he knows something
that is so important and yet he's willing to kind of taught the president
by seeming to go against him what does that say about this person is a witness
I mean it gets difficult to even kind of see him as credible at this point well I
think it gets I don't know what he knows but just based on the way that I think
it gets difficult period when you know you're facing enormous legal bills that
are essentially going to sink I really wanna figure than the bills I might I
don't mean look at Michael Flynn names his family as part of the reason why he
decided to plead guilty to the FBI with you know like a cardan held a perjury
well I mean sure but Michael Caputo one of the job aides told the congressional
investigators basically get to go to Hg double hockey sticks cuz his family
incurred you know 125,000 dollars illegal bills and we're sinking
financially so of course when your family and everything you know is being
crushed because of your association with the president potentially he did illegal
things we don't quite know yet you're gonna do whatever you have to do
to protect your family and to protect the future of your family and I think
what's really going to be sad particularly looking at the Russian
investigation if there ends up being nothing there you look at all these
lives that have been completely crushed remember even with Flynn it was James
Comey who told congressional investigators that the FBI aides take
away from interviewing Flynn with it he didn't do anything wrong
and then he pleads guilty naming his family and we know who's struggling the
one thing we know about Michael Cohen is that it seems like he'll throw anybody
under the bus because in the beginning when they were asking okay tell us in
court now that you've alluded to you've got two or three clients he just went on
ahead and just gave that client was like it was another little slip whether it
had to do anything with the cases and if you're willing to give an interview if
you're willing to speak out publicly like he's now done and go against it
the presidents are saying to in parsad I mean I think we should all take that as
a signal that he is in a dire situation and is grasping for air wanting any help
no one thing he wouldn't answer yeah money the stormy dancing he will answer
at some point all right president Trump's sitting down with Secretary of
State Mike Pompeo at the White House today as we get new details on the
administration's push to denuclearize North Korea we're going to debate it
Plus White House National Security Advisor John Bolton outlining the agenda
for president Trump's meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin this
month so what can we expect and what should the president tell Putin and the
president's mind this is very important because it gives him an opportunity to
size up Blatter Putin to see where there are areas where we might make progress
together and and where there are areas where we may not Fox News Alert
President Trump is meeting today with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo at the
White House the administration is revealing for the first time that it has
a plan to denuclearize North Korea within one year here's White House
National Security Advisor John Bolton on the matter there are possibilities for
doing a larger negotiation on helping to get Iranian forces out of Syria and back
into Iran which would be a significant step forward also yesterday President
Trump responded to critics and defended his historic summit with Kim jong-un as
a tremendous future I got along really well with chairman Kim we had a great
chemistry no okay is it possible have I been in
deals have you been in things where people didn't work out it's possible
also axis reporting some White House officials are so optimistic about the
progress of those talks that there could be a second meeting with kim jeong-hoon
in new york this September during the UN General Assembly and that the regime
would first have to show progress for the
needing to happen so we're looking for measurable things these are some of the
things that I guess we didn't get with Iran Lisa
Leon Secretary Madison I think it was about two weeks ago that he hasn't seen
any steps that North Korea has taken to dismantle their weapons so that is
concerning so I think a lot of Americans including Congress would like to see
some sort of plan that North Korea actually wants to denuclearize and that
they're going to be honest in that way so I think within that plan has to be a
means for anywhere anytime inspections and transparency because that was one of
biggest pieces of criticism regarding their ran deal is that we didn't have
any time anywhere inspections and people work lack of transparency was a massive
issue well and you know you talk about what the president offered Kim jong-un
and that was security basically you can stay alive because once things start to
change and you do business with us it could get dicey we're offering you
security I mean he made some great and valid points about where they are
located in the world that what those beaches could be if they weren't firing
off cannons you know the great real estate developer says wow look at that
beachfront property I can see a condo there the fact of the matter is that
there are a lot of images you know coming back and forth satellite images
trying to see what is going on are they expanding are we getting clear Sania no
no we're not getting any sort of clear sign and and there are articles about
you know are they expanding their ballistic missile capabilities as
they're saying these things satellite images trying to see what they constrain
you see what they're doing and you know I think the US needs a clear roadmap of
what there is and they need a way to verify that it's slowing down at the
same time this is gonna be a slower process than
