- It's safe to say that fuses and relays may be becoming a thing of the past.
Often we see technology from professional level motorsport start to filter down
and become more accessible to us in the hobbyist and semi professional
motorsport market.
One of those technologies is solid state power management units.
These replace relays and fuses and distribute power to all of the devices
in the car that require it.
This allows a lot of flexibility and a lot of control over the way the power
is managed, in particular how it's fused if a device fails.
In this case the ECU Master PMU 16 provides 10 channels that can support
up to 25 amps of current as well as another six channels that can provide
up to 15 amps of current.
Each of these channels can be user configurable in terms of the maximum
current that we want to allow to suit the device being driven.
Another function with a PMU such as this is that we can set the particular
channels to retry if they are tripped for any reason.
This means that the fuse doesn't need to actually mechanically or physically
be replaced.
As well as those output channels, there's also 16 analog inputs to the PMU.
This allows aspects such as temperature sensors to be wired directly to the PMU.
And even in this case, if you're running an engine that's controlled with
a carburettor, you can use the PMU to control aspects such as a thermofan
based on the water temperature input.
A unique function with the PMU 16 is the output channels can also be pulse
width modulated.
This for example allows a fuel pump to be speed controlled.
This can also be achieved using the electric fans as well to control
the actual speed of the fan operation.
The PMU 16 includes an onboard accelerometer and gyro.
And the reason these are included is that parameters can be set to allow the PMU
to automatically shut down all of the electrical circuits on the car if a crash
is detected.
The PMU can communicate with two separate CAN buses and this allows it
to integrate very easily to ECUs, to dashes, as well as to ECU Masters
own range of CAN based switch pads.
This is a really nice way of adding the ability for the driver to easily control
any of the functions or channels in the PMU via a nice keypad that can
be fitted in the dash of the car.
These keypads area available in four, six, and 12 key variants.
In order to adjust the functionality of each of the buttons,
the icon beneath the button can easily be swapped out with a huge range
to cover most of the common functions that these buttons would be used for.
The PMU 16 has a price point of USD$1349.
