It's up to us - Jakkalswater - Duration: 2:41.

As you hold the empty glass bottle in your hand, take a moment to think about it.

How long does the glass take to naturally decompose?

How much of the consumed glass ends up in a landfill?

How much is actually recycled?

On a daily basis, Namibia is dumping tons and tons of glass into the enviroment.

Very few of those bottles make it to the recycling plants.

These bottles mainly make it into the riverbeds, behind the shebeens and next to the main roads.

I think we should have a look at it again, what happens to those bottles?

Here is the best example, we are here in the Namib Desert.

At a place called Jakkalswater.

It's about 90km east of Swakopmund.

It used to be an old railway station, built in 1899.

It had a restaurant, a bar and a little hotel.

These bottles you see lying around here, they have been dumped around this old building here.

Many, many years ago.

And you can still see them here, it's an area of about a square km glittering with glass,

as if it was dumped her just a few weeks ago.

And I believe that these bottles will still be here in years to come, maybe a few hundred years.

I think we should think twice before we throw a bottle into our enviroment.

It will be there for many, many years to come.

What can we do?

I think we should, recycle, reduce and reuse wherever we can.

It's up to us to make a difference to our country.

These bottles are from Jakkalswater and they are over 120 years old.

For the next unforseeable future they will continue to look like this.

For the next 100 even 1000 years.

It makes you think, doesn't it?

So next time you hold a bottle like this in your hand, think twice

because, it's up to us.
