Good evening and welcome to tucker carlson tonight
The government shutdown is now entering its fourth week and neither side has moved much
The president has been arguing for the past three years
That the United States needs a wall on its southern border agree with his positions or not
Trump has explained why he believes that repeatedly and ingrates Dale most recently in a live address to the country Democrats
Meanwhile have argued the opposite America should not have a border wall
They've said again and again
But the difference is they really haven't explained why
at various times Democratic leaders have told us that walls don't work walls are racist walls are wasteful walls are
Insufficient walls are excessive and walls are too old-fashioned walls are either medieval or ancient
Depending upon who's reading the talking point at the time
Some of these arguments are semi-real others are transparently fake still others flatly contradict one another
Rhetorically, the Democratic case against walls has been a mess from the beginning at one point House Speaker Nancy Pelosi tried to bring order
To the chaos
By flatly declaring that walls are immoral
She recently she said that repeatedly with the force of religious edict which in effect it was
But in the end the theology of it all was just too complex. It seemed to confuse people
How can walls be immoral if a lot of those who oppose walls have walls around their own homes?
That was a tough case to make even for a persistent faith leader like Nancy Pelosi
Finally Positas gave up
Yesterday she accepted the inevitability of a border wall. But here's the catch the hidden trapdoor in the space-time continuum
That Pelosi is famous for in Washington
Yes Democrats now support a border wall
But no
It's not the kind of wall you had in mind that kind of all you can touch or the kind of wall
That might keep unwanted people out of your country. It is instead a digital wall
It's a massive invisible edifice constructed entirely of virtual ones and zeros
That reside in some Amazon server farm somewhere in suburban, Virginia
It is the wall of the future in other words while the Google might building. We will Pelosi calls it a
technological wall
We are proposing is to build the infrastructure of the ports of injury it strengthen that the ports of entry
Spend the money is hundreds of millions of dollars, but accessible to have the scanning
technology to scan cars coming through
for drugs contraband of any kind
weapons even
Repair the roads of facilitate
immigration and trade in those regions
the positive
Shall we say almost?
technological
Wall that can be built is what we should be doing
of course a
Technological wall. Why didn't we think of that? But what do you say on all walls?
Technological walls. The only difference of course is in the kind of technology. They employ
Well, yes, but before you get hung up on some semantic point just be grateful
The Pelosi is using the W word at all
there was a time not so long ago when she was telling us that a fleet of lawn mowers would be enough to secure the
border
Let's talk about where that a more serious structure might be necessary
We're fencing will do or mowing the grass so that people can be smuggle through the grass
What a certain point you begin to wonder if Democrats are really as serious as they say they are about wanting to secure our border
Maybe you've asked yourself that question
Well wonder no more they are not interested. Officially Democrats support our immigration crisis
Which they will be quick to remind you isn't actually a crisis at all
But part of the poem at the base of the Statue of Liberty
Democrats main interest is in continuing this status quo and they want to do that by making certain that no effective barrier is ever built
along our southern border to achieve that
Democrats and their faithful lackeys in the press will say anything literally anything
Yesterday to name but one among many examples
Democrat Katie Hill of California member of Congress accused the president of engage in a form of terrorism for disagreeing with her
It gets more and more frustrating every single day to see how irrational he is
And it it's we can't accept this anymore for me. This is political terrorism
Terrorism
Maybe that's next week's talking point. Check the sunday shows to see if it makes an appearance there this week the phrase was
Vanity project the wall. They're telling you is somehow the president's vanity project like a
remodeled basement rec room or the Clinton Presidential Library
Some consultant thought up that line and emailed it to Pelosi and Schumer who made certain that every Democrat in Washington
Included it in virtually every publicly uttered sentence for a period of at least 24 hours
Which of course they were happy to do being robots. Watch a
Construction brigade for the president's vanity project doesn't necessarily require our building of vanity
Project concrete wall for one thing. This is a vanity wall
The president is holding it up because of his vanity project
The president united states has a vanity project that he doesn't want to give up spent on the issues that impact them every day
Not on the president's vanity project. This issue is
About a vanity project for this president
Vanity well
That's a new concern in Washington as it turns out vanity is actually the main reason the left loves in mass
immigration in the first place
They let millions of poor people into your country at your expense
But they get to feel like heroes for doing it the security of our Airlines. That's
115 homicide charges for illegal aliens in the last 21 days where their
Normal pay period salary should be there are zeros zeros
21 days is three weeks. That means at least
900 Americans have died because of heroin
Well the back and forth on Capitol Hill. It's pretty empty now
everybody's left there and there really isn't in progress going forward and the
negotiations to end the park government shutdown the president
Tweeting a bunch this morning including this tweet in which he said the fake fake news media keeps saying we haven't built any new wall
Below as a section just completed on the border
anti climbing feature included very high strong and beautiful also many miles already renovated and
In service. So what what happens now? And where are we going?
let's bring in our panel Charles hurt opinion editor for The Washington Times Charles Lyon opinion writer for The Washington Post and
Jason Riley Wall Street Journal columnist and senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute
Okay, Charlie
It doesn't seem like it's ending the president said he's not right now going to declare a national emergency
But said that he can at any time sure and I think the reason that he made that
Statement is because he feels pretty confident that he is holding a winning hand at least politically speaking
in the current environment that that you know
when your opponents are saying that this is a manufactured crisis that there's not really a problem with the
Border and and doing something is like building a wall is immoral
that he feels very confident that he's winning that but when he went to the border
he took with him his lawyers, and he also took the head of the
Army Corps of Engineers because I think that it's clearly a
strategy that he's thinking about and
And I think that you know from my conversations with with lawyers who have looked at this
I think that he does have legal standing if he wants to
Declare an emergency and do it that way here is the president on the national emergency and Senator Murkowski on this
if they can't do it, I will declare a
National emergency. I have the absolute right to do it says as clear as you can the real concern that I
is impressive
Because this border security is Donald Trump's priority
we don't know who our next president may be, but it may be a
president who's number one priority is
Dealing with climate change. He says I don't care whether I have the support of the Congress. I'm going
To direct these funds to address because I feel that this is a nice lesson
Republican from Alaska there are Republican from South Carolina, Lindsey Graham
At this statement. I just met with President Trump and his team
It's clear to both of us that Democrats don't want to make a deal and will never support border wall slash barriers on president Trump's
Watch even though they did
So in the past they hate President Trump more than they want to fix problems even problems
They acknowledge to be real and serious in the past
Democrats will do everything in their power to defeat Trump in 2020. Mr
President declare a national emergency now build a wall now Chuck
well, I
Guess it's hard to tell whether we have entered the really absurd stage of this or the really serious stage of this
the reason so it all seems so absurd is
that
The both sides know what the deal to be done at the end of the day would be it would be some form of
wall funding for a concession on something Democrats really care about like
daca
You start to see even some of the the newly elected Democrats from swing districts talking about that
Trump in the past has said that
His son-in-law that Jared Kushner has been running around Capitol Hill seeing if there's any interest in that
so it's absurd that they can't get to YES on that but the serious thing is we've actually reached the point now where
Just our government is not functioning as it was intended
The separation of powers is about to be thrown out of the window here by you know
This sort of off-the-cuff declaration of national emergency. I understand. He probably has
A leg to stand on legally here
But it's certainly not within the spirit of how these things are supposed to go and it could just set us on a further down
word spiral of government dysfunction because as Lisa Murkowski says
Somebody might try the same thing the next time around one thing we've all learned out of this Brett
There's a lot of these emergency powers kind of lying around up there on the shelf on Capitol. It's kind of dangerous
You know to have that kind of power just lying around there and there are some Republicans who mentioned concerns about giving away power
And obviously they had those concerns when President Obama issued executive. Also, did I I mean, I was one of
the I was in the crowd that was very critical of
President Obama for using executive authority handling the phone not you depend on the phone not only on immigration but on environmental
Regulations and so forth doing these and runs around Congress to press his agenda
And I think this will be more of the same from Donald Trump
I think the president point that loose mikowski mates is an important one
The liberal coming of President Trump won't be President forever two can play this game. Oh income inequality is a national emergency
I think we should spend X billion dollars on doing this and I don't need Congress's approval
Look what the president Trump did before I got here. So I think that is a serious concern
You also see senators from these states that are being hit by this shutdown
rural states large forests a lot of furloughed forest workers and so forth, Oregon, Alaska
Maine and you're starting to see I seen some fracturing on the right when it comes to standing together with the President on this
The longer it goes on. I mean that was quite a scene
We saw there with these congressmen out there speechifying to an empty chamber. They're not doing their job
they're not in Washington doing their job at the same time that
800,000 people today didn't get a paycheck. I mean I grew up in a family that live paycheck to paycheck
This is a big deal for a lot of Americans
But a lot of those people in Washington who are supposed to be in Washington who aren't aren't living paycheck to pay
Well, I mean nearly 80% of Americans apparently live paycheck to paycheck the quarter into the staff very bad
The president's saying that they maybe they're gonna make sure that they get all the back pay. Once this thing is over. I
Want to play this one more soundbite this is the president on
For the borders talking to Sean Hannity is the fracturing on the center left on this border issue
Democrats in Congress, especially the new ones coming in is starting to say wait a minute
We can't win this battle with Trump because of the fact that it's just common sense
How can we say that a wall doesn't work? I will vote for some money for physical barriers
Okay not going to be yeah
It's not gonna be across the entire 2,000 mile stretch, and it's certainly not going to be a concrete wall
But it will be part of a package
Charlie okay, you know I feel for federal workers
They've been treated very shabbily and they have been for a long time, but let's not forget
The federal government is not here to provide jobs
It's here to serve the American people and and employing federal employees as part of that as far as the separation of powers
I agree. I do not like that. But the idea that we're just now getting around to getting upset about that
I think it's kind of ridiculous considering over the past
20-30 years Republicans and Democrats are both to blame for this
Partisanship has taken over
The separation of powers in a lot of ways where if you have Democrats controlling Congress or Republicans?
Controlling Congress and somebody in the same party controlling the White House
They will throw everything away and and and disregard their own jealous the jealousy of their own
You
You
You
