Government studies and economic research show over and over again that to be black in America

is to face bias

If you're black in America you run into bias at a pretty young age

If you walk to school in the morning, you might have to wait longer to cross the street

drivers stop less frequently for black pedestrians than for white

If you're black in America and you're looking for a job

you might have to look harder

job applicants with black sounding names receive fewer call backs than those with white sounding names

and if you get the job, keep in mind that you'll be working just as hard as your white colleagues

but might make 30% less than them

If you're black in America and you want to buy a house

your agent might show you fewer properties than his white clients

If you're black in America you might get pulled over by the police more than your white friends

If that happens, the police are more likely to search your car

and they're more likely to use force against you if there's a misunderstanding

If you're arrested and convicted of a crime

the sentence might be harsher too

If you're black in America and you get sick

you might have to tough it out

Now there are some caveats

First Hispanics, Asians and other minorities face a lot of these situations too

and second, the story is based on studies and surveys

so not all of these situations are true for every place in America at every time

but it does paint a pretty consistent picture

And I recently started as a student at the University of Kentucky.

I'm going to see what it's like to bicycle to class, since parking passes are so expensive.

On my way to class

Traffic lights seem much longer when you're on a bike...

It saw the car. Yeah, that was like three minutes, so...

There's a little park here to go through

These trails actually look really nice.

It's a chance to not have to compete with a bunch of cars.

Turn onto the road that goes to Red Mile

That'll be the first "high traffic" intersection.

I'm changing gears, since it's pretty flat.

Trouble shooting coolant pump - Duration: 6:05.

In today's video we're going to change the capacitor in the coolant pump of the mini mill 2.

Capacitors

So we're at the back of the mini mill 2.

This is where the capacitor goes to the coolant pump.

I have a quarter horsepower motor here, and I noticed that when in the

haas call for the coolant...It wouldn't come.

but if you come back here and you turn the shaft with your hand it would start so I assumed it was the capacitor.

I opened this up to see what's happening in there and lo behold I found a bulged out capacitor

This is the old capacitor, this is like a major malfunction.

You can see that it's all bulbous and blown out the back and this was the problem.

Normally, these things will go out... I read somewhere on the forums around a hundred thousand tool changes.

But mine is nowhere near that... and it really kind of surprised me.

what I did was I ordered a new capacitor.

basically, you just want to match up the micro farad's.

like just like when you change a light bulb and you want to match the wattage for wattage.

You want to match the micro farads, to micro farads.

This capacitor reads that it's eight (mFd) micro farads plus 10% minus 5%

And so I needed to get another eight micro farad capacitor

And I found one at Grainger. and so I found this one. The only difference is the voltage. This one's 440. The old one was 450 Volts

But this one should work

This is a hanger. I just went ahead and taped it up and very quickly. We're going to show how to measure capacitance

on a capacitor.

This is your symbol for capacitance.

and so we're going to test this very briefly so you want to change this to capacitance

That's this symbol right here

This first symbol on the top left, that's your capacitance

This is a diode. Ohms. This is just your squealy

But you want to turn your dial to there...

And then you have your select function you want to select through...

its reading Ohms...

reading voltage...

reading Ohms....

This is your micro farad's

So you guys can see my screen there. There you go. Can you see the numbers?

So this one's reading

7.99 microfarads

That's outstanding. That's what we're after. We're after eight

So this one should work

You always want to match up your micro farad's for example...

electromagnet turning with the wrong capacitor and it takes to power in it gives the power back and

It works in time with your commutator there so that it's turning like an electromagnet.

if the numbers lower and the capacitors weaker

The motor will run jerky, you know to run jerky and because it's out of time... because it's not strong enough as the commutator is turning.

If it's too high it'll get weaker. it'll actually get weaker.

Like that electromagnetic forces are pulling harder on it.

Anyways, if you get one too, high your motors gonna run weaker if you get one too low

It's gonna be old jerky and hard

So you always want to match micro farad's to micro farad's if you take an 8 mFd out.

which I did... put an 8 mFd back in

This is what a capacitor looks like when it goes bad. It swells it hooves up to back on this one even bulge down

I don't know if you want to touch that or not. Probably not it might give you cancer in the state of California

So let's put this in the back of the coolant pump and see what happens

to the mill

So I did make some little jumpers here because the ears were a little bit different

And also, I put this cushioning foam on the bottom, I think I'm gonna stick it in there with some double-sided tape

Get it all nice and Secure

Be very careful that you don't drop your screws in your coolant

And now for the moment of truth.

Haha

All right, we're in business

Here I'm walking in a suburb somewhere in the US

It feels surreal

It really is

the way one would think it is

there are houses on a row

And make it feel like my home.

I think I'll manage, the roads are very straight forward
