VOC 2018 Keynote: Special Olympian Melissa Joy Reilly - Duration: 18:41.

>> I am so excited.

It is such a big honor.

And that is why I am also a little bit nervous.

[APPLAUSE]

>> Can everyone understand me okay?

>> Yes. >> Great.

And at the end, if you--

I will do my very best to speak slowly and clearly.

And at the end, I have a few slides.

Like this one.

I am Melissa, and I am from Boxborough, Massachusetts.

Not Foxborough, where that stadium is.

I am the youngest of four.

And I am not spoiled.

I am a graduate at the Acton-Boxborough High School.

[APPLAUSE]

>> And the transition program of Middlesex Community College.

[APPLAUSE]

>> And I am a working girl.

[APPLAUSE]

>> I also love reality TV, movies, musicals,

pizza, sushi,

and Dunkin, the Boston Pops, the Patriots.

Or actually, I love all of our New England teams.

[APPLAUSE]

>> You see, I am pretty much a regular girl.

[APPLAUSE]

>> Who just happens to have Down Syndrome.

But, you know what? I'm also a lucky girl.

[APPLAUSE]

>> I grew up in a great family.

[APPLAUSE]

>> In a great town, with great schools.

Way back, when I started school, inclusion was just beginning.

My parents tell me some great people like Lou Brown,

Marsha Forrest, Sue Buckley,

and our own Ann Howard.

[APPLAUSE]

>> And Cynthia Levin.

And many others had a vision

that inclusion

was going to make life better for everybody.

[APPLAUSE]

>> Excuse me.

They opened the eyes of many teachers and special educators.

How lucky was that?

For me, inclusion was normal.

So, all the way

from kindergarten

through high school,

I was part of the regular education classes,

except for math.

[APPLAUSE]

>> I love school. Even that big bus.

I think you know what I mean.

Inclusion has made my world bigger

and so much more interesting.

[APPLAUSE]

>> Best of all, because of inclusion,

all people with disabilities are getting a better education,

and are getting better jobs.

[APPLAUSE]

>> Many years later, I was told that inclusion

was not exactly normal.

It was not exactly an easy ride.

There were many bumps, but my parents had help.

They would be forever grateful for Rich Robeson's advice.

He was always available.

Thanks, Rich.

[APPLAUSE]

>> And, too, Tom Silcandro, for guiding us through a legal mess.

Thanks, Tom.

[APPLAUSE]

>> By the way, I do know that having an extra chromosome

also comes with some extra challenges.

But, I have learned how to deal.

But for the most part,

I'm just a girl who is more alike than different.

[APPLAUSE]

>> And that is why, at the high school, just like my classmates,

I wanted to go to college too, live away from home,

and then maybe get a dream job.

Well, living away did not happen,

because I went to Middlesex Community College.

I graduated from their transition program

with a certificate in office support.

[APPLAUSE]

>> And guess what? I did get a dream job.

[APPLAUSE]

>> I am working here in Boston at the State House.

[APPLAUSE]

>> I am an office aide for Senator Jamie Eldridge.

[APPLAUSE]

>> I just love my job. And I just love going to work.

[APPLAUSE]

>> My coworkers are all super nice,

and I have the best boss ever.

[APPLAUSE]

>> Right, Tom?

Now, I would like to tell you

just a little bit

what I do in my free time.

Like, going to movies, eating out, camping,

and I also like shopping.

I love to travel, and I volunteer.

I make presentations at many different organizations

and businesses.

I also talk to medical students and genetic counselors

about living with Down Syndrome.

And I have volunteered at a food bank.

[APPLAUSE]

>> I'm also pretty busy with Special Olympics.

I am an athlete, and a global messenger,

and I'm on the board of Special Olympics.

[APPLAUSE]

>> As a skier, I have represented

Team USA

at two world games.

Both in Japan and in South Korea,

I competed in alpine skiing,

racing against girls from all over the world.

[APPLAUSE]

>> The ones from Austria and Russia were really tough,

but so was I.

[APPLAUSE]

>> In Nagano and in Pyongchang,

I won a silver medal in the slalom.

[APPLAUSE]

>> As a Special Olympics global messenger,

I help spread the message of inclusion in our communities.

And I am an inspirational speaker.

This is my passion.

I speak on behalf of other people

with different disabilities.

It gives me an opportunity to tell the world

that because of new laws, better education,

and better jobs, people with disabilities

are so much more able

than people used to think.

[APPLAUSE]

>> Dreaming and hoping for a bigger

and a more interesting life

can become a reality.

Today, each one of us, in our own way,

has the opportunity to reach for the stars.

[APPLAUSE]

>> And now I'll show you a few slides.

I went to Washington with a bunch of self-advocates

to talk to our senators and representatives about jobs.

Waiting for that big bus.

In high school,

I did all the same things

the other students did.

[APPLAUSE]

>> All four years, I ran cross-country and track.

My teammates were awesome.

I even was part of my team captain's wedding.

Not in it, but I was invited.

[APPLAUSE]

>> The transition program at Middlesex Community College

prepared me for a job in the real world.

My job is very important to me,

in that I can be seen

as a productive member of our community.

And I hope all people with all disabilities can get a job.

[APPLAUSE]

>> The MDSC has a great program to encourage employers

to hire people with Down Syndrome.

It is called Your Next Star.

I am one of the stars, and you can see this link on YouTube.

Governor Baker came to the MDSC Buddy Walk last fall,

and I was asked to introduce him.

It was a great honor.

It was fun to have the governor there.

He is so nice.

[APPLAUSE]

>> Right, Tom?

Mrs. Shriver was the sister of President Kennedy.

She started Special Olympics in her backyard,

because her sister had a disability.

She started Special Olympics in her backyard 50 years ago.

She changed the world, and she'll always be my inspiration.

[APPLAUSE]

>> Oh, did everyone see this poster at some MBTA stations?

>> Yes.

>> People told me that they saw my picture at the aquarium,

at Harvard,

and at the crazy MBTA stations.

[APPLAUSE]

>> Tim Shriver, Mrs. Shriver's son, gave me my medal in Nagano,

and he also watched my slalom race in Pyongchang.

And it was a good honor

to represent Team USA at both countries.

[APPLAUSE]

>> Three of my favorite places to visit are Holland,

Italy, and Alaska.

Here I am in Italy at the Leaning Tower of Pisa,

leaning on my sister.

[APPLAUSE]

>> And here I am kayaking in Prince William Sound in Alaska

with my brother.

Last year, President Kennedy's 100th birthday

was celebrated at Fenway Park.

Tim Shriver threw out the first pitch.

He asked me to come to the mound with him.

It was the Red Sox against the Seattle Mariners.

And we won.

[APPLAUSE]

>> Oh, by the way? Do you know who this is?

Tom Brady.

Thank you for all coming to the Visions of Community Conference,

and for listening to my story with Down Syndrome.

And this is my new niece.

She's number six, and she's the first girl.

Thank you.

[APPLAUSE]

ᴴᴰ COMBAT AIRSHIP ON the PROTECTION of RUSSIA. Atlanta will cover against Missiles, US | TainaRVB - Duration: 9:00.

THE COMBAT WARRANTY IN THE PROTECTION RUSSIA

Link to article in description

Almost 80 years ago, on May 6 1937, in the United States suffered

wreck German airship "Hindenburg", the largest

the balloon of its time. As a result of hydrogen explosion

35 of 97 people died, who were on board.

The death of the "Hindenburg" in fact became the end of a short,

but a bright era of passenger and commercial vehicles

dirigibles. But in the military these balloons continued

be used throughout of the 20th century and remain

in demand in the new century.

The third echelon

The programs for creating combat dirigibles in the interests of

armed forces have many developed countries.

Advantages of these flying The devices are obvious: large

carrying capacity and range non-stop flights,

smaller than that of airplanes and helicopters, fuel consumption,

high reliability, duration being in the air. Besides

Moreover, for airships not need a takeoff and landing

strip - run it almost any

more or less flat area. To the disadvantages of balloons

low speed (up to 160 kilometers per hour)

and weak maneuverability, However, there are tasks for

which these factors do not play a critical role.

In July 2015, an advisor first deputy general

Director of the "Radioelectronic" Technology "(KRET) Vladimir

Mikheev told RIA Novosti about the beginning of work on the project

airship for missile defense of the country. He can

become a full-fledged element warning systems

on the missile attack (SWAD), which for today

The day consists of two echelons - orbital satellite

grouping and ground radar stations.

"The main advantage airship is a big

surface on which it is possible to place antenna

system, - said Vladimir Mikheev. - These locators

can record starts intercontinental ballistic

missiles (ICBMs), trajectory flight of their head parts.

CRET will provide an electronic "Stuffing", and the balloon itself

develops aeronautical center "Augur".

This is a promising airship "Atlant", the first

whose flight is planned for the year 2018. It is being developed

in three versions - with load-carrying capacity 16, 60

and 170 tons. For military needs, most likely, will be used

more severe models. It was stated, that "Atlanta" will be able to work

at heights of up to 10 thousand meters - this can be enough

in order to detect the warhead of ICBMs in the overclocking

and the final sections of it trajectory.

In addition, a large carrying capacity and flight range - up to

5000 meters - will allow to use these airships for transportation

military equipment. Most large "Atlant" in its

carrying capacity will surpass even a heavy military transport

An-124 aircraft - 170 tons against 120. Theoretically, he can

to raise three tanks into the air T-90 with full ammunition

or eight combat vehicles infantry BMP-3.

Replacement for satellites

At the same time, "Atlant" is not the most unusual project

aerostat, which for today the day is in the stage

development. Perspective unmanned dirigible

"Berkut" from the company "Augur" can climb the heights

20-23 kilometers and stay in the air as much as three or four

months! Such a duration flight was achieved

thanks to the power supply system from solar panels. Him

the main tasks will be high-altitude communications

aerial photography, as well as overseeing large

areas. But in theory it can be used

and for electronic fight, anti-aircraft

defense, target designation. Similar aircraft

could be useful, for example, Russian military arctic

grouping - in conditions months of polar

Berkut will not experience no problems with power supply.

In general, stratospheric airships In time,

good replacement for satellites cellular communication as a military,

both civil and military. Aerostat, hovering at a height

20 kilometers, is capable of ensure sustainable

communication at ranges up to 760 kilometers. Wherein

airships are cheaper satellites to launch them

do not need a booster, they do not clutter up the orbit

after the end of the term operation. And in the case of

breakage balloon can be put on the ground for repair.

In different years, their projects stratospheric dirigibles

dual-use Central aerohydrodynamic

the Zhukovsky Institute, Dolgoprudnenskoye design

Bureau of Automatics, NPF "Aerostatika" and a number of other enterprises.

However, so far none of them was not implemented. More

There is not one in the world active stratospheric

airship. To aircraft designers until you can create

Reliable enough solar batteries of the necessary dimensions,

able for a long time autonomy

work of a balloon.

And how are they?

In the US military programs airships are developing

in two directions - tactical and strategic. To the first

are mini-balloons Combat SkySat Phase 1 by weight

two kilos that have already been used in Iraq.

They provided radio communication between ground units

in a radius of 320 kilometers. The plans of the US military

- increase load capacity these "babies", so that

they could be installed optional equipment.

For example, kamaz permission. Cost of one

aerostat - only about two thousand dollars. They

could become cheap alternative to reconnaissance

drones.

Towards a strategic direction stratospheric

airships, for example, a project Stratelite. This telecommunications

platform for support connections in the area around

800 thousand square kilometers in production and not

went - civil customer found it too expensive

and difficult in production. A similar fate befell

and superheavy transport airship Walrus, development

which was dealt with by the Agency advanced defense research

projects of the Pentagon (DARPA). This Leviathan was supposed to

lift cargo from 500 to 1000 tons and to transport

its for a range of 22 thousand kilometers per week. AT

the present is American scientists are creating

reconnaissance airship, able to work for

altitudes of about 80 kilometers, that is, on the upper bounds

stratosphere.

In the US there were several projects military high-altitude dirigibles,

which was planned arm with cruise missiles

and corrected bombs, but they were refused

still under development concepts - huge sluggish

The balloons would be too easy target for funds

Air Defense of a probable enemy.

This problem decide China that has experienced

in 2015, the airship Yuanmeng, which in the future, as claimed,

will be able to climb as much as 100 kilometers - height,

unreachable for existing surface-to-air missile systems.

This aircraft will be filled with 18 thousand

cubic meters of helium and can be in the air until

48 hours. A little, but "rustle" in the presence of powerful weapons

he can bring: Western journalists have already dubbed

this giant "hunter" for the aircraft carriers. "

Its airships projects dual-use

and European concerns. The German company Cargolifter

AG in the late 90's beginning development of the balloon Cargolifter

CL160, capable of carrying 160 tons of cargo per distance

in 10 thousand kilometers. but he was never built

- the company went bankrupt in 2002. And erected

for an airship huge hangar length 160, width

220 and a height of 106 meters in Wiesbaden turned into

amusement park «Tropical islands ".

Adjust balloons for military needs

and in Belarus. Back in 2005 there the design began there

multi-purpose reconnaissance airship capable of replacing

long-range radar detection and control

A-50. It was argued that six such balloons will

fully control air situation

space of the country. but about this project since

so anything also it was not audible.
