A major health alert: the Zika virus being spread by mosquitos

right here in the U.S.

Viruses can have deadly consequences for humans.

They're evolutionary perfected machines.

I'm an immunobiologist, and I'm fascinated by how viruses

and our immune system interact.

We know that Zika virus can cause severe birth defects

and neurological disease.

I'm currently working to answer the question:

How does Zika cause damage to the nervous system?

This damage may be actually due to an overreaction

of the immune system,

and currently there's no available vaccine or cure.

It's super exciting to be part of a team that could potentially

intervene and help eliminate this awful disease

for pregnant women and their babies.

I grew up in a small town in southern New Mexico.

My father's a chili farmer, and so is my grandfather.

Although my grandfather could not read or write,

he constantly promoted the pursuit of education.

My father taught me the importance of hard work

and its combination with passion for what you do.

I graduated first in my class from New Mexico State University

and earned my Ph.D. from Harvard.

As one of the few Latinas in a male-dominated field,

I've definitely had challenges and moments of doubt.

But I've had fantastic mentors and female role models.

I hope that I can help empower women who may feel like

there isn't a perfect reflection of who they are in science.

There's always going to be a new emerging virus.

I'm hopeful that my work will lead to ways

to combat deadly viruses in the world.

My first memories are growing up in Kenya,

watching my father put up communication towers

in rural villages.

My family, we're all engineers.

My mom, my dad, and my grandfather.

They always taught me that I had the power

to build solutions to problems that I face.

As a mechanical and biomedical engineer at MIT,

I'm passionate about designing technology

to improve people's lives.

Engineers traditionally build with materials

like metal and wood that don't respond to their environment,

so when the problem changes, the solution can't adapt.

So the kinds of materials that I'm building with

are called smart materials, and they can adapt and respond

to their environment.

I'm focusing on the question:

Can these new smart materials really change the way

that we're delivering medications to people?

The sorts of devices that I'm working on

are smart pills that you can swallow

and that will stay inside your stomach

and give you medication for as long as you need,

and then leave when it senses that you're better.

I always knew that I wanted to help sick people,

but I also knew that medical school

was not going to be a good fit for me personally.

So when I found out that, as an engineer,

I could dramatically improve the health of millions of people,

it was absolutely transformational.

Engineering is really about creativity within constraints

and there's something really electrifying

and exciting about that.

My dream is to expand the set of materials

that every engineer, scientist, and maker can use.

If we give everyone the power to build

with these sorts of smart materials, then we can work

together as a global community to create a better world.

Most things in the world are easy to measure.

But what if you're trying to measure something

that's less than one one hundred thousandth

the width of a human hair?

I'm a physicist working on quantum mechanics,

the study of the tiniest objects and forces in the world.

The question I'm working on answering is: If we make

more accurate measurements of the tiniest particles,

can we build better devices?

Today, many devices, from telescopes to microscopes,

from MRI machines to computers, all are gettng more

precise and more powerful.

And to push these technologies into the future,

we need to better understand how quantum objects interact.

But this goes beyond computing; it will also improve

devices and technologies in health and biology

that will have an impact on people's lives.

The work I'm doing now focuses on constructing these tiny

quantum circuits that may become the building blocks

of the first generation of quantum computers.

My mom has an engineering degree and she's worked her whole

career in software and IT, so it didn't occur to me

that a woman's place was not in technology,

and it's what makes me want to mentor more women in my field.

My team and I are now building machines that Einstein

and the founders of quantum mechanics could only imagine

a hundred years ago.

And the knowledge that we're gaining will help us design

a new quantum revolution of devices and technologies

that can change the world.

I love being out in nature,

and one of the best things about being a biologist is that I get

to spend a lot of time in beautiful parts of the world

looking at animals in their natural environment.

I'm really interested in why animals behave the way that they

do and how they think about their worlds.

I've worked on a range of species.

In the past, I've worked with wasps and birds,

but right now I'm working on bees.

Bees are a model animal for studying cognition

because they're so good at learning

about the flowers that they visit.

Right now, the question that I'm trying to answer is

how pesticides are affecting bees' ability

to learn and remember.

I'm doing this work because bees are really

important pollinators, both for our ecosystems,

but also for our food supply.

Some estimates say that one third

of our diet is thanks to pollinators.

By understanding how bees behave now,

we're getting a baseline understanding,

which then can help inform how human impacts

might be affecting their behavior.

I've been lucky enough to have strong female mentors

in my scientific career.

I think it's really important for young women

to be given confidence in science

and know that what they say is just as valuable

as something that a male student might say.

If I had been told in high school that

I'd be able to make a living where I really do just get to

design experiments, think about behavior,

I wouldn't have believed myself.

Animal cognition is a field that is really

exciting to be part of right now.

There's just this amazing breadth, in terms of

what we're starting to understand about how animals,

including ourselves, behave the way that they do.

BREAKING: GOP Bill Proposes Devastating Slash To NFL Tax Breaks | MK Today

If Republicans manage to pass their tax reform plan, the NFL can kiss its tax break for stadiums

goodbye.

The newly proposed tax reform bill would kill the tax-exempt status for municipal bonds

used to finance stadium construction.

(Worth noting: this isn't an idea new to Trump or Republicans.

President Obama proposed ending the tax-free status for the bonds back in 2015, and the

stadium-finance bond provision has long been a target of tax reformers.)

Put simply, because nobody's here to delve through the intricacies of municipal construction

tax policy: when a team asks a city to kick in on a new stadium, the local government

issues municipal bonds to pay for its share.

Those municipal bonds are, at present, free from federal tax, saving investors a measurable,

significant, double-digit percentage of the overall cost … and, in turn, depriving the

federal treasury of significant potential revenue.

How much revenue are we talking here?

A fair amount.

Since 2000, the federal government has subsidized $3.7 billion in tax-exempt bonds for stadium

construction, according to Bloomberg.

A recent Brookings Institute study found that of 45 stadiums constructed between 2000 and

2016, 36 took advantage of the tax-free bonds.

President Trump warned last month that this change could be coming.

"Why is the NFL getting massive tax breaks while at the same time disrespecting our Anthem,

Flag and Country?" Trump said on Twitter.

"Change tax law!"

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders also commented on the issue after

Trump's tweet.

Despite the NFL giving up its tax-exempt status in 2015, she said "it's been well documented

that billions of taxpayer dollars continue to subsidize the construction and renovation

of professional sports stadiums."

"If this industry is going to use money from American taxpayers to build the very

fields they play on, is it really too much to ask that they show respect for the American

flag at the beginning of the game?" she asked.

Not surprisingly, the NFL is pushing back on the proposal.
