What's up guys and happy Labor Day!
Now, why is it that Labor Day in the US and Canada
isn't celebrated on May 1 like in every other country in the world?
Let's take a look!
So for those of you that don't know, in the US and Canada
Labor Day isn't celebrated on May 1
like we do in Latin America and the rest of the world
Here it is always celebrated on the first Monday of September
But, WHY THOUGH?
Are they just trying to be different and special up here in the North?
Well.....kind of...
To understand why it's celebrated on a different day
let's look at WHY we celebrate Labor Day to begin with!
Why is it celebrated on May 1?
Everything began in the 1800s
Back then it was not uncommon to have a work day consist of
shifts that were 10, 12, even 16 hours long
So people were obviously extremely tired
and sick of the long work days
So on May 1, 1886
There was a strike organized by thousands of laborers
in the city of Chicago
80,000 workers gathered to demand
an 8-hour work day without a cut in pay
The strike was peaceful
until things started turning violent
Police ended up shooting into the crowd and killing a few protesters
Which prompted them to organize another strike a few days later
in the Haymarket plaza in Chicago
This even very quickly turned deadly. Someone threw a bomb into the crowd
The bomb exploded and killed dozens of police officers
People went nuts
and there was lots of violence
and as a result of that
there was a court hearing
The leaders of the protest were arrested
and eventually were sentenced to death by hanging
This caught worldwide attention
So in November of 1987 the leaders were executed
Many people considered them martyrs for the cause
while others accused them of being anarchists
But as a result of these events
international labor unions and organizations
declared May 1
as a day to commemorate those martyrs
and to recognize workers worldwide
which is why International Labor Day is celebrated on May 1
Now, let's get back to the US
In that time, US President Grover Cleveland
agreed that labor laws had to change
and action needed to be taken
So congress eventually passed a law making an 8-hour work day a reality
Congress was also in favor of recognizing American workers with their own national holiday
However, President Cleveland did not like the idea
of associated the US with the events of May 1
These were associated with Socialist and Communist principles
So they intentionally picked a different day
They did not want to commemorate the violence and the anarchists
So President Cleveland along with congress
decided to name the first Monday of September
as the official day to remember
the workers and laborers of America
Labor Day!
Canada followed suit shortly afterwards
Labor Day also serves as the day to
mark the unofficial end of summer
This is the final long weekend where people organize their last BBQ
of the season. There are a lot of events. There are big Labor Day sales
And this also means
that students will be returning to school
since the school year here starts in August/September
It's also when people start telling you not to wear white after Labor Day
There's a saying here that it's a fashion faux pas to wear white after Labor Day
but that's something super old that no one even follows anymore
So that's why Labor Day in the USA is on the first Monday of September
