Ingredients for 2 servings • salmon steak - 4 pcs .; • lemon - 1/2 pcs .; • pomegranate sauce - 1 tbsp; • soy sauce - 2 tbsp. • sesame - 2-3 tsp; • nutmeg - 1 pinch; • mustard seeds - 1 tsp; • salt, pepper - to taste

Pour the pomegranate sauce into a bowl.

Add lemon juice

Add salt

Add pepper and mustard

Add nutmeg

Add soy sauce

Mix thoroughly

Stir until the salt dissolves.

Fill the fish with marinade

Leave for 15 minutes

Form hearts from steaks

Put steaks in a baking dish.

Pour marinade over fish

If necessary, fix the hearts with toothpicks

Sprinkle with sesame

Bake 20 minutes at 180 degrees

I wake up on the floor of my parents room

My own room has been surrended to cousins from Florida

My mother doesn't prepare an elaborate breakfast

for our overnight guests for the first time in her life

We eat eggs and toast

as the ghost of Winston Churchill scowls in the background

Everyone helps decorate the house

There's a short debate on whether to put up any lights outside

But it's November, and if any of our neighbors even speculate that we're celebrating Christmas

our local mosque will spontaneously combust

One of my Florida cousins and I use a very long plastic rod

and two-sided scotch tape to hang tulle on the ceiling

It goes something like this

"Oh yeah, we're so fucking smart"

My mom and sister disappear upstairs to get ready

The photographer shows up

He's vaguely tan and one of my uncle's asks what his name is

The disappointment upon learning that the photographer is a Coptic Egyptian

shows plain on everyone's faces

It's 7 o'clock

The guests are ready to go

The photographer is waiting for the cue

But guess who is still not here!

Someone asks my dad for a cup of tea

He wanders around the kitchen for a bit before asking one of my mom's friends

where the tinned milk is

My mother tells me to ask the photographer to stay for an extra hour

We are all...

tired

and hungry

by the time the groom's party shows up

Shoutout to that real weird bit during the actual ceremony

when the imam just, suddenly,

starts hyping up his son-in-law

and then calls him on the phone

to recite some prayers

After my sister agreed to the wedding vows

and my brother-in-law agreed to the wedding vows

the imam then asked my dad

if he gave his permission

for the marriage (???)
