*Pep speaks* So I know I want inside control, I've got to make a frame and try to shrimp
and go in here, or sometimes what I used to like to do is create a frame and try
to come up and come here. But what's happening, because I'm slowing down and stuff (Pep is old)
I don't want to get on the side and stay on my back (playing guard), so I'm starting...
...as you pass, I'm starting to get to my side and what we were doing the other
day is I'm blocking this arm here but, I wasn't going anywhere with it and what I
used to be able to do is, you know the wrestling thing, if you just back off a second
I kick up and go through to my knees. I saw it on a video the other day, I was finding that movement
too hard. In the other video I saw he wasn't try to do the hip up thing he was just
going here and going with his hips low to the floor. Now my worry is that it's a
little bit less mobile and he might take my back, but the idea is, if I go high
with the hips it will be slightly slower and also opens this space up for hooks and things, so he's
just going here ...he's just *BOOM* and then he's backing away and obviously
as a guard player he goes to guard. If you're not a guard player, like me, you come up
and so it's something I might give a go in rolling
*David* Point your head this way and do it again...
*Pep* you pass, and as soon as you pass...I go here
*David* The only thing i would be aware of is: as you come to your knees is that the guy picks up a seatbelt
so as you go this is what you have to worry about.
*Pep* so i'm going to my general turtle defense
*David* Yeh, and then you're turning it into a turtle fight. so I'm going here, instead of coming up like this...
THIS is what I would do. Im gonna come straight to this leg. and then build up and do whatever I wanna do. Because what I don't want to happen is
this knee to end up between my arm and my hips. I don't wanna
end up coming up here, because this is where I'm gonna get my back taken it's
not the end of the world, you might be better at escaping turtle than escaping
side control and you might want to give up the turtle to "better your position"
but, if I was going to do it, I would then take this hand through
and come down here and then I'd start building back up and into my takedown position
*Pep* and if he was a guard player? just do that position back away?
*David* If i was a guard player, let's see. I would kick through
and I've already got a lot of distance cuz I'm I'm kind of taking
myself that way too, you can see I'm kind of extending this leg and throwing
myself in that direction. so as we go...
I've made a lot of ground in this direction
*yeah yeah yeah* and then from here I can sit sit back
*Pep* cause I've
gotta turn right.
*David* yeah you've got to come and follow me a long way. Again, this side...
and then I'm playing guard or whatever.
I can go to my calf crush
playing through some fancy stuff.
*Pep* I think the concept as well for me is... we're in guard
and you do whatever pass you want to do and I need to focus on getting here
straight away!
*David* I would swim straight for that underhook.
I would not let this hand come here, I would go straight there (down)
As you flip your legs....and now maybe I roll through, but you're out
*Pep* I was just thinking because I've seen, it might have been, Jason Scully or
something showing it and I can't remember all the details, but the concept I was
looking at is rather than going up to here, it was the flattened hips.
and I thought that putting myself there might be a bit
dangerous cause I'm a bit immobile, but as long as I shimmy back and get this
arm back
*David* That, for me, I think that's the crucial part... is that I can turn
to my hips high, but I stay on the spot... versus if I go down here I cover
some distance by submarining and I get out of the smash zone, which is key
because if I turn straight into you I'm still in that smash zone, but if I go out
there you want to put weight here... but I'm somewhere over there.
*Pep* and it sticks with the concept
if you go onto your knees and face there...
So this concept of this position here, is me getting my arm back all the time?
YEH and it's the same idea, if i'm on my side... I'm here and you're trying to pin me
*David* and now I'm trying to pin in this space
here but you're down there.
*Pep* that's going to give me a little block*
*David* Exactly
*Pep* I've got to be careful of all the things you can do when I've got that single leg
*David* Sure! There's counters to counters!
