Hi friends! And here we are again, under the California sun
I just came back from the Christmas break
where I saw all my friends and family
and that made me so happy, even if I didn't-miss the cold
so finally under this Cali sun
I decided to film a new vlog
and today. I wanna talk to you about the 5 most obvious differences
between Los Angeles and Italy
to be honest between LA and Turin, thats my hometown
and city of reference
but I think we can expand the concept to the whole country
Number one>
something that I immediately noticed is the difference between Italian commercials
and the American ones.
If you turn on the TV here, the time spent watching commercials
is longer than the actual show that you are watching
something that really made me laugh is that here in the US
you can literally find commercials for everything
one example is lawyers:
I don't know about you but it never occurred to me to find a lawyer's ad
especially hanging on the street
saying "hello, call this number"
while here is one of the most common things
you can find more lawyers promoting themselves than actual Ads walking around
and even on the radio
you can catch those semi idiotic jingles
asking you "did you get injured?"
"Wanna sue someone? Call John!"
Difference number 2:
and I know this might surprise a lot of you
but also coming back home I realised
that we Italians know how to enjoy ourselves a little more than Americans
but let me explain better!
There's the common belief that in the United Skas everything is fantastic,
parties are crazy and everyone has more fun
but to be very honest
It's not quite as much entertaining
Especially in places like clubs and bars
I think that us Europeans are actually better
I went clubbing only once here in LA
I technically couldn't because I'm not 21,
but if you organise in way way or the other you can get in
I went clubbing in this very famous club
but...
I was quite disappointed with the situation
the music was the same you listen to on the radio
while you would expect that here in LA people are listening to the latest releases
and know everything that's up to date in terms of music and cocktails
but it was not as I imagined
because people inside the club
were very weird people
there was this line of guys with girls twerking on them
and I felt a little embarrassed
when it comes to drink I would say we make them better in Italy
because here they're so expensive and with a very little alcohol
and at the end you feel like you're sipping a lemonade
You've payed 15 dollars for
and the music is nice but nothing too special
I am used to clabs in Europe
where they play all kinds of music
and here there's not as much distinction
and its not as fun as you would imagine
house parties are fun, but when it comes to going to the actual club
I think Europe does it better
Number 3!
So, something that I have immediately relized by coming here in LA
and for which I couldn't find an explanation
is that here squares and benches are very rare
this city is enormous but there-s hardly any
bench or square
where you can stop to rest and look around
I think it's because of the dimensions of the city
It's almost a given that you use the car to move anywhere
and the second reason, which is quite sad one
is because in LA there's a lot of homeless people
and since they don't have a place to stay they fall asleep wherever they can
and benches are one of the most comfortable places where they could sleep
and since here in LA
the problem of being homeless is really felt
you can find hardly any benches
and if you find them, the seats are divided
in order to avoid homeless people falling asleep on them
which is indeed very sad
but also a reality of this city
Number 4: it's known the LA is a megalopolis
and as all the other giant cities
There's always something happening, it never sleeps
and there's always something to do
this frantic rhythm of living
can get very stressful and it's really present
in the lifestyle of the city
I didn't realise immediately
but as weeks and months went by
I started paying more attention to it.
It is true that in LA one has very little time do do everything
every second, every moment during the day
is dedicated to something
there's always a place to go,
something to do, you always gotta give 100%
Also because of this
I realised that a lot of places
have a drive through
This happens because it's common that people don't even have time to stop and enjoy lunch
so they just pass in front of it and the food is delivered through a window
and then usually eaten in a car while on your way to do something else
This was kind of a shock realisation to me
because also given my Italian roots
I value a lot eating
and often here in LA there's no time at all!
Especially to do the little things such as enjoying a meal
or grabbing a coffee, everything happens as you're doing something else as well
that the majority of the time in this city
means driving somewhere
but to continue on the topic
that in LA everything is super fast and there's no time to even enjoy a meal
Let's talk for a second
about food in Los Angeles
LA is overall an "healthy" city
so even if people are always rushing
and they end up not actually enjoying their food
I gotta say they're pretty good on that
There's the common belief
that Americans eat only junk food
and it's true that there's a lot of it
but there's also a wide variety of healthy, natural foods
There's plenty of vegetarian and vegan people
and places and restaurants where to find all these articles
There are kinds of food here in LA
that are considered "trendy" and became distinctive of this city
the first of them all
is definitely the Avo toast
and I am the biggest avocado fan so I'm actually quite happy
because I used to eat it all the time anyway
Another very popular item is green tea,
which is called matcha,
and it's basically this condensed powder that they put with everything
I am a huge green tea fan
so I am actually happy about this
they use it from beverages to food
for example once I ate matcha calamari
and I know it sounds weird
or that some of you might find it disgusting, but I swear they were delicious
something else that people here love
are kombucha (one of the most healthy beverages you can think of)
It's kind of a fermented tea
with added flavours to it
I find it disgusting, kinda tastes like pee
I am sure it has a lot of benefits, but taste is not one of them
The other super popular food here
is Kale,
this very sour salad
that I personally hate
and it's used for everything
they even make chips out of it!
Now, I don't know about you but some dehydrated salad leaves with salt on them
It's not what I would call chips
but here everyone loves it and eats it non stop
so yeah
we can state that Los Angeles has some weird habits when it comes to food
but they're Americans,
They're trying so hard
The difference number 5 is one of the biggest
cultural differences I noticed since I got here
and it happens when going to the restaurant
It's important to remember
that here is super important leaving a tip to waiters
for me learning this was a little bit of a struggle
also because being a broke college student
because no one in college has money
and every time you're out having dinner with friends you always gotta remember
that you have to add three, five, or eight dollars (for example)
to the check you're paying
because you're basically then one paying the waiter
and it's considered very bad manner not to tip!
this happens because waiters are underpaid
so they actually earn more on tips
than with the actual wage they get
Something else that weirded me out a bit when I got here
was finding out that the prices exposed on the shelves
They're not the actual prices of the products you're buying
let me explain better
for example, I went to buy a printer
and when I got to the cashier
I had to pay 20 dollars more than the original price
And I asked myself "how is this possible"
To later find out that you always have to add taxes to the price you see
so don't get fooled
because the prices you see on shelves will never be what you actually pay
why the heck they don't put the price with tax included from the beginning!
Well guys, these were 5 of the differences I discovered
between Italy and the USA, I am sure there's many more
and if you know any other I am curious to know
Let's keep in touch, and see you in the next episode!
