USA news on Youtube Jan 23 2019

World, meet Stefanos Tsitsipas. Study the spelling on that last name. T-S-I, then another T-S-I

It's name you're going to have to know well.  Tsitsipas has been a name talked about in tennis circles for a while now, but he made his grand introduction to the greater sports world on Sunday when he beat Roger Federer to reach the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, winning 6-7, 7-6, 7-5, 7-6 in a match that was about as close as a four-set match can be

Tsitsipas, just 20 years old (!), won the games that mattered, though, and dispatched the 37-year-old Federer in a match that felt a lot like a passing of the torch

Beyond the flowing hair and the one-handed backhand that they both share (in what felt like a bit of poetry, though that might have been the early start time Sunday morning contributing to that), Tsitsipas showed the calm strength of a young Federer in the win, never getting flustered in the big points

It was a fitting tribute to the man he beat, who dominated world tennis for nearly two decades without seeming to break a sweat

Via USA TODAY Sports: "There is nothing I can describe it to," said the 14th-seeded Tsitsipas to the crowd after his win

"I'm the happiest man on earth right now. "I actually from the very beginning to keep that mindset on the court, to believe in yourself and your capabilities on the court

Roger is a legend in our sport and I have so much respect for him. I idolized him since I was six and it was a dream for me to be on Rod Laver with him

" More Tennis!Stefanos Tsitsipas gave a delightful interview after advancing to Australian Open semifinalsRoger Federer's loss and – 18 years later – another passing of the torch  While the win feels surprising – how often do we hear of Roger Federer losing to anyone not named Djokovic, Nadal, or Murray? – Tsitsipas is not some random up-and-comer

He's the youngest player in the ATP Top 20, and has a career-high ranking of 15. (Expect him to eclipse that after this win

)  As a junior, he was ranked No. 1 in the world, and in 2018 he reached three ATP Finals, winning one, the Stockholm Open

He's been steadily on the rise, a star in the making, and this win is going to only catapult him into the upper echelons of the tennis world

Born in Athens to the son of two tennis pros (his mom is Russian and a former junior world No

1, just like her son), Tsitsipas started playing tennis at 3 and was already attracting attention by the age of 6

He also looks like this, which probably isn't hurting any chances he has in the marketing department: nourish your sensations

pic.twitter.com/7qk3kYsqv4  — Stefanos Tsitsipas (@StefTsitsipas) July 23, 2018    It feels like we've been waiting for a while now to see who is going to take over men's tennis when the Big 4 inevitably step away from the game

Andy Murray has said this Wimbledon will be his last. Djokovic and Nadal are 31 and 32, respectively, and reasonably have a few years left of top-tier tennis, but (sadly) can't go on forever

Federer is somehow still playing at a high level at 37, but this match felt like one of those moments

A moment where the past shifts to the future.  More than a few likened it to Federer's win against Pete Sampras 18 years ago, when the young Swiss star beat the legendary American in the round of 16 at Wimbledon

2001: 19-year-old Roger Federer beats seven-time champion Pete Sampras in the Wimbledon round of 16  2019: 20-year-old Stefanos Tsitsipas beats six-time champion Roger Federer in the Australian Open round of 16 pic

twitter.com/kqppfl5O4o  — SI Tennis (@SI_Tennis) January 20, 2019    Tsitsipas has the talent, the drive, and (for now, one would hope) the mental strength to get to the top of tennis and stay there

For years we've tried to find the next guy to do it, but for a variety of reasons none could make the leap

Now, all of a sudden, the future of tennis looks bright. Alexander Zverev, Denis Shapovalov and Tsitsipas all are under 23 and look poised to take over the game

Zverev is still alive in the Australian Open, winning each of his matches convincingly so far

Shapovalov looked great in the tournament, until he ran into Novak Djokovic and got smacked, a reminder that while the torch may be being passed eventually, Djokovic isn't going anywhere
