Hey guys, it's Carly from All The Pretty Books and welcome to Collector's Corner, the place
for those who want to learn more of the finer points and nuances about collecting Harry
Potter books.
On this segment of Collector's Corner, we are going to discuss Bloomsbury's Harry Potter
and the Chamber of Secrets, what's rare, what's valuable, and how to recognize it.
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets was published in 1998, just 1 year after the much
acclaimed Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone came out.
And according to the Bibliography of J.K.
Rowling, there were only 706 1st print Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets released.
I think there were more than that because there are too many of them that you see come
to light on eBay and other e-commerce sites, auction houses, and that sell through private
listings and such.
So I have a harder time with 706.
And like the 1st book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Ted Smart, a secondary
publisher, was allowed to produce Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
It just came later in the timeline.
I've seen people claim that it was published at the same time as the Bloomsbury or that
they're about the same in value and neither are true.
So if you're wanting the most valuable Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, it needs
to be the 1st print, 1st edition Bloomsbury-published version.
There are many different editions of this book at this point in time.
The book is 20 years old, and there are many editions, even by Bloomsbury.
So, which one is going to be the most valuable?
Which one is the 1st print, 1st edition, what does it look like.
I'll show you!
So this is one.
This is my copy, it's a 1st print, it's in a jacket.
It happens to be signed - I'm very excited about that.
I'm very excited about that.
I've had it for about 10/11 years.
But there's a few things that can tell me just by looking at the jacket that at least
it's an early print.
And you're going to see this blue badge right here.
This going to be found on earlier prints.
So, this doesn't mean it's a first print; it means it's an early print.
So, if I'm looking for a 1st, if I see this I can, ya know, keep looking-I'm on the right
track.
But you can see the Bloomsbury here on the spine.
And if you look at the back of the jacket, you'll see the Bloomsbury logo, that little
dog.
So again, that tells me Bloomsbury -- it's not going to be a Ted Smart.
It's not going to be a Canadian version, which is great, it's just not what I'm looking for
right now.
But you have to be careful, because this could still the Australian version.
The Australian version looks very similar to the U.K.
And we're going to check out the boards, because it could still be an early jacket, but it
could be a later book.
So there's still more we have to look at.
Again, the blue badge here.
Really what we've got to look at is the copyright page.
The copyright page is going to be what tells us all we need to know.
On the copyright page you're going to look for published by Bloomsbury.
You don't want to see any hint of Ted Smart or the Book People -- that's going to be Ted
Smart; if you see anything about Book People on the copyright page, that's a Ted Smart
book.
Move on if that's not what you're wanting.
And you want to see the full number line, which is the 1 - 10 number line.
The 1 indicating a 1st print.
So really that's all you have to know about this book.
This book doesn't have the value of the Philosopher's Stone, so I'm not as worried about faking
them.
But you do have to be careful about people trying to sell Canadian and Australian books
as Bloomsbury U.K. printed books.
You also need to check on the copyright page that it was printed by Clays U.K. because
here's an Australian 2nd print.
It does not have the blue badge, so that's at least something.
I don't know if the 1st print does, but by the 2nd print, it's already gone.
But the spine says Bloomsbury, and on the back you see the little dog.
And the copyright page looks quite similar.
Printed and bound in Australia by Australian Print Group.
This is my Canadian 1st print.
It has the blue badge that you see on the Bloomsbury Chamber of Secrets U.K. version.
But it has Raincoast on the spine, because that's the Canadian publisher, and it does
not have the little dog.
And this is cool!
The boards for the 1st print Canadian Chamber of Secrets are blue.
Isn't that fun!
And here's that copyright page.
I've also seen people trying to pass off these really cool Canadian Magic editions as a 1st
print, 1st edition of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, and it's not.
This is the really cool deluxe edition of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, published
by Bloomsbury.
There's the little dog, the Bloomsbury logo.
And they've tried to claim that it's a 1st/1st, and I've told a few people that it's not a
1st edition, it's the deluxe edition and it matters, because again, value.
Most of the time I got no reply or "thanks" and they didn't change their ad.
So, ya know, I have to educate the consumer, not necessarily the seller, because most sellers
don't want to listen to me.
So it's not a 1st edition.
It's just pretty.
And this is a softcover edition of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
Even in 1st print form, this book will never be a 1st edition, because it was not released
at the same time as the hardcover.
It will be a 1st edition; it's just a softcover edition.
You can have the 1st softcover edition, because it is.
But, it's not the 1st edition.
It will not have the same value as the hardcover ever, unless it's been signed and you're looking
at an unsigned hardcover then maybe.
But all things equal, not a 1st edition ever.
Will not have the same value.
So do not be confused.
I've even seen an ad with somebody trying to sell this as a 1st edition Harry Potter
and the Chamber of Secrets for quite a few hundred dollars.
It's not even in English guys, it's Russian.
It's not even close.
So, you just have to know what it is that you're looking for, because you don't to go
put your money wrong place.
And that's what it goes back to at the end of the day.
Aren't these Bloomsbury 20th Anniversary Edition Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets book
really cool.
I really like them.
I have them in the 4 houses.
And I've seen people trying to sell them as 1st/1st - 1st edition, 1st print.
Still not a 1st edition, guys; it's your 20th Anniversary Edition.
Alrighty, guys.
That does it for this segment of Collector's Corner.
