Girl, 6, watches pit bull EAT dead dad's face - then posts photos to raise alarm - News Live - Duration: 2:45.

A six-year-old girl endured 24 hours of horror as she watched a pit bull EAT her dead dad's face next to her unconscious stepmum.

The child managed to raise the alarm by taking photos of the scene and posting them online.

In what sounds like a horror movie scene, police in Detroit, USA say her actions saved the stepmum's life.

When relatives saw the gruesome images they quickly called the emergency services.

The names of those involved are not yet being released.

The Detroit Free Press said the young girl was rescued Thursday evening by police from a home in Mount Morris Township.

Officers said she had posted photos online of her dead father and unconscious 36-year-old stepmother.

Police told the paper that a pit bull had been gnawing on the 40-year-old man's face.

Mount Morris Township Police Chief Terence Green told the paper her actions prevented her step mother from dying.

He said the child as resourceful and bright, adding: "This six-year-old went through a traumatic event — and she saved a life."

Officers were sent to the house in Oleander Drive by the child's grandparent, who lives in Tennessee and saw the photos on Facebook.

That brave young girl was then picked up by her biological mother, the police chief added.

The stepmother, 36, was taken to a local hospital, where she is stable, but in intensive care and still unable to tell police what happened.

Green said the couple appears to have suffered a drug overdose but is still awaiting toxicology test results.

When police went to the house, the officer heard the little girl screaming.

Green said she told the officer that "the dog was chewing on someone's face."

The officers broke into the house, found the girl's father, who was dead and stepmother, who had been unconsciousness for at least 24 hours.

The girl had not had anything to eat for a day and maybe longer.

She told the officers she had woken up early Thursday and thought her parents were still sleeping.

When they didn't respond, she splashed water on their face but they still wouldn't wake.

Green told WNEM that detectives are now contacting relatives, neighbours and anyone with information to try to establish a timeline — and chain of events leading up to what likely was an overdose.
