Recently I learned that Green arcade in Korea an iconic location for Tekken competition closed its doors permanently
I couldn't help but be reminded of all the arcades in malls across
America in the 80s and 90s that were home to these arcades
Most of which eventually became abandoned. All the fun
We had going to different arcades, meeting new people, being amazed by a game
You never heard of before,
getting the high score, all that excitement just seemed to vanish. and though many of us grew up in the arcades or have at least
experienced an arcade at some point
There doesn't seem to be a clear answer to why they've been pronounced dead by so many
So I've decided to investigate to find out the reason why
arcades in America started to decline
I found that practically no video on the Internet strives to give a comprehensive analysis on why arcades went away
And the reason I think we don't have that clear explanation is because the answer isn't so simple
I know this video will only begin to scratch the surface on what has happened to the American arcade scene
I hope this video will encourage people to start talking about some of the points and themes brought up in this video
So, please don't hesitate to leave a comment if you want to see more and share this video with others..
First why is this topic worthy of analysis? An arcade in its best form...
Promotes community, promotes healthy competition and conversations on strategy...and are fun
These are three things American corporations and legislation weren't interested in-- why would they not be interested?
Well, for the corporation's the promotion of consoles allows more people to make money off of individual units-- for instance
You could sell a Nintendo console
resell It, sell games for it and create massive Black Friday hype-- where Americans spend an estimated
5 billion dollars in this 24 hours alone. this sort of hype with arcade cabinets due to their size
Isn't really doable.
basically consoles feed more into the capitalism consumer model and with consoles you purchase products for a whole lot more money
With arcades you purchase collaborative experiences for a few quarters-- in order for arcades to truly work and maintain their value
It would be too much work for Americans.
this man came all the way from Indiana to get one
He came a thousand miles just for this game. Yeah, I've done seven stores a day for three weeks now
I cannot find it. I have to live with my kids for the rest of the year
So I have to have this
So to please the kids they line up at the few stores that have been able to get copies of the hottest Nintendo games
Mario 2 and The Adventure of Link
Now what's Nintendo you ask and why should you care? Well, I think it's something you should know about because it's captured America's children
In order for arcades to truly work and maintain their value in America there has to be a cultural emphasis on community,
collaboration and strategy despite the accessibility of gaming consoles
It's much easier and culturally aligned for Americans and their corporations to buy products for retail as opposed to being active and innovative on
experiences
There also takes creativity on making arcade safe spaces
,comfortable spaces and on some level
it has to further embrace Japanese culture -- and this is not something the American media has been fond of which leads me to my
Second point: millions of people are ADDICTED to hours of gazing and electronic images on game screens in our case
well video games FEVER has prompted a number of businesses to try to cash in on that billion dollar CRAZE and
Now they've INVADED our toy industry
Yamashina is the president of Bandai the biggest threat to the American toy industry and memory
This is a comic CRAZED country kids and grown-ups bought five hundred and fifty-four million comics last year
Sailor Moon and her four girlfriends INVADED the United States in September
Flint intends to seek stricter licensing procedures for arcades with video games ---News correspondent
Colleen Dominguez on the CRAZE that has now hit Hollywood -- when it comes to the biggest Pokemon CRAZE
It has to be the trading card officials think the CRAZE has gone too far
Constant trading is not only distracting kids from class work
But turning the playground into a black market
Video games in a sense are addictive not like drugs more likely need to jog to do
Well at the game others particularly young people do very well city councilor
Ray Flynn says some parents are concerned that the games is spreading into their neighborhoods Flynn wants to see laws
that would keep youngsters out of arcades before in during school hours and late at night a
Horrifying possibility for parents who can't believe the game makers are fantasizing about decapitation and murder
--- Arcades in America hit a hard decline because
American media loves to promote controversy
Especially when that controversy has to do with pushing negative propaganda about Japan and other Eastern cultures --we defeated
Communist Japan. Radical Islamists. Are we ask our men and our women to go overseas to fight for our country and sacrifice ---"communist Japan"!
So much for this great country so that we can be the land of ---American media
Consistently blames video games and products for their problems with the youth instead of other factors
like education, bad politics, environmental health or something else and
American media consistently paints Japanese culture in a negative light by using anything young people are interested in as the CRAZE
I'll be looking at the electronic game CRAZE, which is not only fascinated the nation which has created some interesting problems as well
In 1978 a new Japanese machine appeared on American shores
Although it looked innocent enough
this machine turned out to have some unusual powers-- and when discussing Japan they use words like INVASION to further promote the irrational fear of
immigrants in America
And they always suggest that things that kids are interested in or on some level something to be ashamed of--
YouTube launched a new video network yesterday where you can watch other people play video games
For real its a whole network. It's called the we should all be very ashamed of ourselves for failing his parents channel--
What's the problem with all this?
Well, there's many but for starters it promotes the idea that people don't have to take responsibility for their actions instead
they can just blame video games or some other products and
It says that things kids are interested in are regarded is simply childish or geek..
The masses of people actually don't see the values in arcades..
Governments pass legislation that permits its arcades from flourishing-- city officials today announced that video games will
No longer will be licensed in residential areas only in commercial and industrial neighborhoods
licenses for about half the video games already in Boston are unlikely to be renewed-- and
The general public believed the notion that video games and comics are just a waste of time..
in Turn comics video games and superheroes become an alternative weird
Counterculture that is at odds with mainstream culture and it really shouldn't be that way,
Comics, video games, superheroes, anime, It's all cool and people shouldn't be ashamed of it..
The lack of arcades in America is a problem that stems from a deep cultural and race related
propaganda that promotes being afraid of immigrants and
So-called "invaders". Arcades are a great place for people to come together and we should use arcades as a platform to embrace all cultures
