Good day fellow horror fans, I am Torstein from Cinema Terror and today I was in the
mood to revisit a film that I don't believe I have seen in about twenty years, and that
movie is Sometimes They Come Back...
Again.
This is a straight to video sequel to the 1991 Stephen King adaptation Sometimes They
Come Back.
Now I did enjoy the first one, but I can remember being surprised that it actually got a follow
up, but I guess it did well enough to earn one five years after its release.
Sometimes They Come Back...
Again takes the format from the first one and tries to do things a bit different by
adding a body count, cheesy humour and overall just trying to create something that can stand
on its own and perhaps even be more entertaining than the first one, which even if I enjoy
is not exactly a thrilling ride.
So, in Sometimes They Come Back...
Again we follow the single father Jon Porter.
After his mother passes away, he and his teenage daughter Michelle heads back to his hometown
to attend the funeral and clean up her house.
What he does not know is that a demonic entity from his past has returned, and is not only
after Jon, but also his daughter...
Sometimes They Come Back...
Again actually started out quite interesting.
The setup, while familiar from the first one, works here.
You believe in the characters, you will find it interesting to see where things will go
and basically, they have you hooked in to the movie.
Some of this has to do with a suprisingly talented cast.
Michael Gross plays Jon, Hilary Swank plays his daughter Michelle and Alexis Arquette
plays the demonic entity that is Tony Reno.
Arquette shines in his role and goes from being charming, menacing and hilariously funny.
And while I did find him funny, after the midway part of the film or so, they go with
the decision to spice the movie up with cheesy over the top kill scenes and one-liners that
felt out of place.
The story in itself is dark and appealing enough for them to just tell it straight instead
of making Tony become a cartoonish character.
I mean, some of this stuff is funny on its own, but not within a story that is supposed
to be serious.
Once they started to introduce the slapstick humour, I felt my interest started to wander
away.
I also feel the story starts to slip up after a while and it shows during the final confrontation
I think as the way they decided to let the finale end is totally ridiculous.
Even so though, the film isn't bad.
It has a good pacing, never becomes dull to watch and I did enjoy the characters.
They also do a sort of nod to the original by having Tony kill Jim Norman from the first
film off screen.
Sometimes They Come Back...
Again delivers for the crowd that was out there in the 90's wishing for another Sometimes
They Come Back movie, if they even existed at the time.
You get a movie that takes the same formula and amps it up with more comedy and violence.
And while it doesn't all work, it is still a worthwhile sequel for fans of the first
one.
Sometimes They Come Back...
Again gets the decent score of 2.5 out of 5.
Have you seen this film or any of the others in this series?
I know that I saw the third one, Sometimes They Come Back...
For More when it hit the local VHS shelfs, but I can't remember a single thing of it,
except that I disliked it.
Should I give it another go and perhaps do a review of it?
Let me know in the comment section below.
Shockingly enough, the only other Stephen King related movie review I have done is last
years smash hit It, so check that one out if you want and leave a like on the video
if you want me to do more reviews of Stephen King adaptations.
I grew up in the 90's and constantly watched them, so I should really do more of them for
my channel.
As always, I thank you very much for watching another one of my videos and please do come
back for more horror related content here on Cinema Terror.
