Tiger Woods, Bryson DeChambeau and Phil Mickelson given USA Ryder Cup captain's picks

USA Ryder Cup captain Jim Furyk has named Tiger Woods, Bryson DeChambeau and Phil Mickelson as his first three captain's picks for this month's contest at Le Golf National.

Woods will make his eighth Ryder Cup appearance and his first since 2012 after returning to form and fitness this season, where he has posted five top-10 finishes to move back into the world's top 30 and reach the FedExCup Play-Offs.

The former world No 1 had originally been named as a vice-captain - the same role he held at Hazeltine in 2016 - but will now be replaced in that role, with David Duval, Zach Johnson and Matt Kuchar added to Furyk's backroom team.

"We were looking for players that had played good this season and that were in good form," Furyk told the media on Tuesday.

"We're heading over to Europe, where it's going to be an interesting, boisterous crowd.

"We were looking for players that would handle that situation well and would thrive and love the challenge ahead of them.

In naming these three players, that's what we've done.".

DeChambeau locked in his place after registering back-to-back wins at the Northern Trust and the Dell Technologies Championship, while Ryder Cup stalwart Mickelson will make his 12th consecutive appearance for Team USA.

Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas, Patrick Reed, Bubba Watson, Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler and Webb Simpson were the eight automatic qualifiers for the American team, with Furyk's picks the three immediately below them in the qualification standings.

Furyk still has one more player to name and will complete his line-up following the conclusion of the BMW Championship on September 10, with Tony Finau the favourite to get the final spot.

Tiger Woods is relishing the opportunity to represent Team USA at the Ryder Cup again after being named as one of Jim Furyk's wildcards.

Woods, who finished 11th in the qualifying standings, will make an eighth Ryder Cup appearance later this month at Le Golf National after joining Bryson DeChambeau and Phil Mickelson in the first three of four captain's picks.

The former world No 1 has missed the past two editions of the biennial contest through injury and only returned to competitive golf in November, but has since registered five top-10s - including a runner-up finish at the PGA Championship - to move back in the world's top 30.

"To have an opportunity to go to Europe and to have an opportunity to win a Ryder Cup and to be part of this group of guys to have that opportunity to go there, it's exciting, it really is," Woods told the media on Tuesday.

"I made my first team at Valderrama and it was a great learning experience to see the passion that one of our late, great team leaders in Payne Stewart showed for the event.

"He made me understand how important the Ryder Cup is and from that moment on I always wanted to be part of each and every team.

"I haven't been part of the team playing-wise for six years.

I served as vice-captain a couple of years ago and that was absolutely incredible to be part of the team, to try to help these young guys in any way I could.

This year, to be able to play again is beyond special.".

Woods has been relieved of his original role as a vice-captain - the same role he held at Hazeltine in 2016 - but will now be replaced in that role, with David Duval, Zach Johnson and Matt Kuchar added to Furyk's backroom team.

"Tiger and I spent time as partners, we've spent a lot of time as vice-captains talking strategy, talking pairings," Furyk said.

"It's been great to have his help and get a little feel of one of the best minds in the history of the game on your side, helping you out.

"We're all excited to see him healthy again.

It's a feather in our cap to have him playing on our side.".

 Il portavoce ha precisato che gli scontri avvengono in un'area (Khelet ben aoun) circa 17 chilometri in linea d'aria a sud di Piazza dei Martiri, il centro di Tripoli, situato sul mare

 Unhcr: "Risparmiare i civili". Alla luce degli scontri in corso nella capitale della Libia, l'Alto Commissariato delle Nazioni unite per i Rifugiati (Unhcr) esorta le parti in conflitto a risparmiare i cittadini e le infrastrutture civili e a consentire l'accesso ad aree più sicure a coloro che cercano protezione

"Il recente bombardamento di quartieri abitati da civili ha provocato morte e distruzione, ha costretto le persone a fuggire ed è motivo di grande preoccupazione", scrive l'Unhcr, ripercorrendo poi quanto accaduto nelle ultime ore

Nella notte di domenica gli scontri a fuoco tra gruppi armati hanno ucciso due persone e ferito molte altre, compresi bambini, nel centro per sfollati Fallah 2 Tawergha

Il sito ospita oltre 900 cittadini libici sfollati. Nell'area di Janzour, nella parte occidentale di Tripoli, 27 famiglie libiche, tra cui due minori affetti da una malattia degenerativa, hanno cercato riparo in una scuola dopo aver abbandonato le proprie abitazioni a causa degli scontri a sud della città

Ieri, lunedì 3 settembre, un team dell'Unhcr ha visitato le famiglie e valutato la loro situazione

L'Unhcr, in coordinamento con altre agenzie umanitarie, fornirà aiuti di emergenza a tutte le 150 persone che si trovano nella scuola

"Una squadra medica di una clinica locale è impegnata a visitare le famiglie e a fornire assistenza sanitaria di base, ma i bisogni sono in aumento", avverte l'agenzia Onu

 "L'attuale situazione della sicurezza nella capitale libica è instabile, imprevedibile e sta limitando l'accesso delle agenzie umanitarie sia ai libici sfollati che ai rifugiati colpiti dagli scontri", denuncia l'Unhcr

Domenica scorsa l'agenzia stessa, in collaborazione con il ministero dell'Interno libico e il World Food Programme (Wfp), ha distribuito aiuti alimentari per una settimana nei centri di detenzione governativi di Triq Al Matar e Qaser Ben Ghasheer, dove sono detenuti 2

450 rifugiati e migranti. La distribuzione di aiuti nel centro di detenzione di Abu Salim, dove sono detenute 450 persone, è stata invece sospesa a causa dell'inasprirsi degli scontri nell'area

 "Stiamo monitorando da vicino la situazione, lavoriamo in collaborazione con la Direzione libica per la lotta contro la migrazione illegale e le Agenzie delle Nazioni Unite, e ci adoperiamo affinché tutti i rifugiati e i migranti siano trasferiti in un posto più sicuro", scrive l'Unhcr, aggiungendo che intanto sabato la Guardia costiera libica ha soccorso 276 rifugiati e migranti e li ha fatti sbarcare ad Al Khums, 120 km a est di Tripoli

L'International Medical Corps, partner dell'Unhcr, era presente al punto di sbarco a Al Khums e ha fornito aiuti di emergenza e assistenza medica

In tutto sono sbarcati 195 uomini, 36 donne e 45 bambini, e sono stati recuperati due corpi durante l'operazione della guardia costiera

L'Unhcr continuerà a fornire assistenza alle famiglie e ai rifugiati libici sfollati nonostante l'aggravarsi delle condizioni di sicurezza a Tripoli
