USA news on Youtube Sep 4 2018

I did an internship in a hospital and also an internship

in a pharmaceutical company

at the time when I was still in high school

to sort of compare the two.

And I realized that you can actually have an impact

on people's lives by science.

So, straight up science.

So designing new drugs,

and actually understanding how these drugs work,

and then, how they help better people's lives afterwards.

And that's when I first got interested in chemistry

and that's why I started studying in chemistry

in college.

To win the Inspiring Science Award

would be a fantastic recognition

of the work that my research group has done

in the field so far.

And it would be a great recognition

of the contributions that we've been able to make.

But also, I think that the ability of us

But also, I think that the ability of us to serve as role models in the future,

to serve as role models in the future,

and actually set an example

for future generations of scientists would be fantastic.

And that's something that I would love to do.

One piece of advice I would give to young women

just starting out in science

is that not to feel limited

by who you think a scientist can be,

what their hobbies can be,

or what their favourite colours can be.

You know, you can be a scientist and you can be feminine.

And you can be a scientist and you can love playing sports.

There's no mould of what a scientist can be.

And I just want you to feel empowered to be

exactly who you are,

because who you are, can be a scientist.

One of the most rewarding things about what I do

is getting to share the science that I work on with other people

whether that be visiting a classroom or public talk,

or just chatting with someone on the airplane next to me.

I love sharing the science that I'm working on with people.

And I find that when people start to think about

the size and the scale of the universe,

and some of the incredible things

that are out there in space,

you know, they just start to realize that

all of our everyday drama, everyday conflicts and problems,

they seem so small in comparison.
