USA news on Youtube Aug 9 2018

In case you had forgotten, the state of California is currently experiencing the worst wildfire

in the state's history, possibly in the history of the entire United States.

California is burning down right now.

And what is the administration doing about it?

Well, they're blaming the people who are responsible for this, or at least they think they're doing

that.

Earlier this week Donald Trump tweeted out that it is environmental laws that are making

all the water in California go into the Pacific instead of being used to fight the fire, and

we just got to cut down all the trees and then you can't have a fire.

Well, Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke tried to one-up him on that comment this week and

released an op-ed in USA Today where he didn't just blame the fact that, you know, water's

going to the ocean because water flows that direction.

He said, "It is the radical environmentalists that are responsible for this massive forest

fire out there in California."

Specifically, because these environmentalists have been fighting for decades to stop the

clearcut logging that private companies and the Federal Government have sanctioned for

decades.

So, because of that, forests are growing taller, we've got some undergrowth happening here,

and that's just prime time for fires.

It is not because of climate change as all the experts and scientists are telling us

which is making the drought so much worse which creates the perfect conditions for fires,

it's the fact that the trees exist and that's why they're on fire.

That is the argument coming from the Secretary of the Interior this week.

And as always, you kind of got to look below the surface to find the real motives here,

and here's the motive.

The Department of the Interior is actually trying to lease out some of these areas in

California that had been off-limits to logging for decades, and now they've got the perfect

boogeyman.

They're trying to say, "Look, if we don't lease these out for private companies to come

in and make a profit the whole thing is just going to burn down anyway and then all these

trees are useless, we get nothing out of it, the forest is gone, either way, so you may

as well let us come in, hire companies to cut the trees down, sell the wood back to

us, and then there's no fire.

Then nobody has to die, right?

This is a perfect excuse for environmental destruction here in the United States, and

again, some of these areas where they're wanting to go and log, number one, they're not even

on fire.

Number two, these are areas that have been protected since at least the 1970s.

We had finally hit a point in this country where we were planting more trees each year

than we were cutting down.

We were growing our forests back.

We were growing our natural resources back faster than we could use them.

That is what we are supposed to do.

That is what humanity, civilization has done since the dawn of time, and we finally got

back to that point.

And here we have this Administration that is so beholden to corporations that they want

to use any excuse possible to go in there and clearcut these forests so that these companies

can make a profit.

The fire is not caused because the forest is there.

Climate change is directly responsible for the increasingly severe droughts in that area

creating the conditions that spark the fires but this science denying administration will

never admit that, and they will use these fires as an excuse to lease out these areas

of forests that have been growing just fine for 45 years so that corporations can make

a few extra dollars and so that we have a little bit less nice of an environment to

pass on to our children.

Test Kitchen: Spinach Agnolotti - Duration: 0:47.

First I scaled up my pasta dough and mixed it with blended spinach to add color, and

I worked the dough.

I used Cheese Leaf from Fresh Origins Microgreens.

It was nutty and pungent.

I mixed that with torched, grated corn, and ricotta to make a filling for the pasta.

I made agnolotti.

It's my favorite stuffed pasta.

I think it plates beautifully.

I cooked it and then made a cheese sauce with asiago and Anchor Cooking Cream.

It was already reduced and it cut my cooking time in half.

This dish is spinach and Fresh Origins Cheese Leaf Agnolotti, with asiago, pine nut, and

scallops.

SUMMER SEASONAL AFFECTIVE DISORDER | VIDEO BY PSYCH-MINDED - Duration: 4:23.

Does your depression ever get worse in the summer compared to the winter or any

other time of the year? Stay tuned because there's a good chance you might

have Seasonal Affective Disorder during the summer.

Welcome back to Psych-Minded

I'm your host Kalley Marie and today we are going to be discussing a

little-known form of depression called seasonal summer depression.

Now Seasonal Affective Disorder, in general, you've probably heard of. That is

when, during the winter months, depression

tends to worsen really badly

We know that Seasonal Affective Disorder is likely caused by the shorter days, the

colder nights. However, with Summer Seasonal Affective

Disorder, the onset of the summer months actually ends up causing depression in

some people. In about 90% of cases of Seasonal Affective Disorder you do see

that occur during the winter but there are about 10% of cases that experience

this summer depression. The symptoms of summer Seasonal Affective Disorder

include trouble sleeping, difficulty concentratin, poor appetite, weight loss,

and anxiety. So what are some of the contributing factors that cause Seasonal

Affective Disorder in the summer? There are a couple theories -- and the number one

theory is shifting schedules. Any time our schedules are thrown off or we have

to do something a little bit different than what we're used to, it can cause us

to feel a little out of balance and sometimes even depressed. So in the

summer some of us may have time off work; our children may be out of school or we

may be rushing them to other activities and trying to figure out how to

coordinate this time off as well as these additional activities for our

family. There are also several holidays during the summer, whether they be

national holidays or weddings or just more get-togethers with family. All of

this can add to the stress of summer and make someone who is susceptible to

Seasonal Affective Disorder in the summer potentially see it come up during

this time. Additionally the heat itself can make us pretty miserable and if

you're a little more heat sensitive or you struggle with the heat in the summer

it can also contribute to potentially developing Seasonal Affective Disorder

in the summer. Next there's this pressure to feel good in the summer. There's this

pressure to have a really good time and enjoy all these different activities and

maybe fit in as much as possible into those three months as you can. And of

course we know that summer can bring up a lot of insecurities. We're maybe

looking at people's Instagram feeds and thinking why can't I be on a cool

vacation like that or maybe we really struggle with body image in the summer

and that is really common for a lot of people. The combination of these summer

pressures and insecurities can leave us feeling let down overall that we maybe

didn't live up to the expectations of how people have told us our summer

should go. So how do we ultimately combat summertime depression? Number one is

hydrate. Absolutely make sure during the summer months you are getting more water

even if you don't feel thirsty. Next, please don't feel ashamed to reach out

and ask for help during these months. Even short-term therapy or a sitter one

night a month can be really helpful to sort of alleviate the hectic schedules

and make more time for you. During this time be really mindful of your sleeping

and your eating habits. Do your best to try to keep things in balance as much as

possible. And next, know your limits and plan ahead. If you're gonna be going to

an amusement park or an outdoor event and you know you're potentially gonna

get really hot or irritable try to plan ahead and see what you can do to make

the trip a little bit easier. And lastly, not everyone is out there having this

incredible time during the summer and there are a lot of people who still

struggle and suffer with mental illness or mental afflictions during these

months. Don't feel ashamed if you are not having a good time or you're really

struggling right now. It's perfectly okay to reach out and get some help

and I really encourage you to talk to somebody this summer. If you have any

questions about what summer time Seasonal Affective Sisorder is or you

want to know more about it please leave a comment below. And if you liked this

video please give it a thumbs up. If you haven't yet please subscribe to this

Policy post WWI: Dr. Aelwen Wetherby - Duration: 3:06.

DR. AELWEN WETHERBY: Meanwhile, in the 1930's,

under Franklin Roosevelt's presidency,

that's when we start to see debates about some sort of

national health insurance really emerge as something being considered.

By this point, some groups within organized medicine,

so medical societies have

started to say they don't like the idea of government enacting

some sort of plan that would cover everyone.

So by the time these things are being discussed at the

national level by Roosevelt in the 1930's,

the AMA starts a vigorous campaign against it.

Roosevelt knows this and for that reason

he says let's leave it out,

cause I want Social Security to pass which of course, it does.

And after the war, Truman really follows through with

this idea that Roosevelt had had.

He picks up on Roosevelt's proposal for this

economic bill of rights which includes framing basic medical

care as one of those rights to what he called the Fair Deal.

Once again, the AMA, in particular spearheads

this campaign against the idea of national health insurance

for many for the same reasons

that they had been concerned about in the 1930's.

They actually end up launching a, I think it was a

1.5 million dollar lobbying effort against a proposal

for national health insurance, which at that time,

the most expensive lobbying effort in American history to date.

And as part of this campaign they frame this idea

that Truman is proposing, as socialized medicine

and as something that is again foreign, essentially a

foreign ideology that is creeping in to American society

and therefore must be resisted.

And the other problem too,

is that you have a large segment of the population,

so people who are working, who had health insurance

through their employment, through one of these schemes

that had started to develop in the 1930's,

who maybe are basically satisfied with what they're getting.

And that takes out a large part of the population

that might otherwise be really arguing for

and demanding a different kind of model.

In 1943, there's a War Labor Board decision

which basically excludes benefits from these very

strict wage increase controls they had enacted during the war.

In other words, they said,

okay if companies want to offer benefits, like health insurance

to their employees, that's fine,

we're not going to restrict any sort of changes in that,

even though we have these controls on wages.

So that suddenly became a way for industry

to actually become more competitive in a marketplace,

so if they wanted to preserve a group of workers

or if they wanted to attract workers to their company,

they could offer more generous benefits,

such as health insurance,

to help attract and preserve the workforce they were looking for.
