Hi everyone, so it's 4:20am
so I was sleeping, I didn't wake up before of the jet lag
but today
we're taking the plane with Andrea to go to South Carolina
it's here on the map, in Charleston
Andrea is getting ready
I'm going to eat something quick and we're heading to the airport
So we're going there to spend a long weekend
We're going for 4 days just the 2 of us, let's go !
And we're at the airport, Hi Andrea !
It's early !
do you want a chair?
no it's not that early
Always travel with
a matching outfit not to get lost !
What do you think Andrea?
it's very American
But they do that as a joke of course
Here we go, we went through security in a few seconds
it was very quick, there is nobody at this time
and now we're going to the gate
and we're leaving!
I think we're going to sleep well on the plane
so we're in a very small airport in Bloomington IL
it's the size of the airport
that's it!
on the other side it's the entrance
and here are the gates
it's my luggage
Let's go, first plane to Atlanta
Here we are in Charleston
It's raining a little bit
and there is 80% of humidity
and it's 92°F
You can imagine
the feeling
I feel like I'm in a steam bath
it's a feeling of ...
of steam, 80% humidity
very nice...
So now we're going to take the bus to our hotel
hoping that the rain will stop
we arrived at the hotel
It's here, and it's so pretty
I'll show you the houses when we walk later, it's beautiful
so I'm going to show you where we're staying
so here we share
when you enter the apartment
there are 2 bedrooms
the Cuba bedroom and the Brazil Bedroom
we are in the Brazil bedroom
and we share the kitchen, it's pretty cool
and when you enter the Brazil room
Andrea is looking for bedbugs
It's a very important thing to do
and we have a private bathroom
Here where we stay with Andrea from outside
it's so so cute!
We're apparently experiencing a tropical depression
it's a mix of rain and sun... all the time
and now it's the rain
It's so beautiful, I wanted to show you the houses
For example this one
there is a very specific architecture
typical from the South of the USA
With for example the porch, with the door to the porch
it's pretty fun
and the storm is over for now
Can you tell us where we are and what we're doing
We're in a restaurant called hom
sur King Street
because it's raining a lot at the moment and until 2pm
we thought we would eat a little something
and then we'll walk to the city center
to visit Fort Sumter
which is a fort
which was where
the civil war has started
So we're walking towards the city center
to visit the Fort, so pass by steeples
churches
Andrea told me that Charleston is very well known for its numerous churches and bell towers
So we're getting on the boat to visit the fort
To give some context
you have to picture yourself in 1860
Abraham Lincoln is elected President of the U.S
Of course
the Southern States are not very happy about it
Because Abraham Lincoln doesn't want to abolish slavery but wants to slow it down
it wants to forbid new States to have slaves
So, South Carolina
which is a growing state
very rich thank to slavery
is unhappy and decides to get out of the U.S.
and becomes one of the future confederate states
separated from the U.S
here on this Fort,
the North is still present
Of course, South Carolina, isn't thrilled about it
they don't want a war at first, so what do they say?
Please leave the Fort, we want it back
The North doesn't want
So, tensions are growing
letters are sent back and forth
and in 1861, on April 12th 1861
The first shot is fired
and here we go
we're at the beginning of the Civil War
I wanted to show you, I'll try to focus
yes, there is some blue sky !
it's nice out ! Well it didn't rain all afternoon
but the blue sky came out !
Hallelujah ! By the way, let me show you...
Hallelujah, because...
ok, I don't know if it'll show on the screen
but this street is so so cute
there are plenty of trees, houses are kind of hidden
it's so so cute !
Look at those houses !
