Trying Scottish Food | A Frenchie Chronicles - Duration: 12:03.
- Hi guys! It's Marine
- And Arran.
- Welcome back to My Little English Page.
So, Arran went to Scotland a few weeks ago,
and I begged him to bring some Scottish things to try.
So,
he brought--
- Irn Bru.
- Okay what is Irn Bru?
- It's a soft drink,
and I don't know what flavor it is.
It's Irn Bru flavor.
(laughs)
There's nothing really like it,
that I can think of.
- That's like more popular than Coca-Cola
in Scotland, isn't it?
- Yeah I think so. - Yeah.
- It's almost like a national drink.
That is haggis from the airport.
(laughs)
So it's not gonna be--
- the best - He was worried
it wouldn't go through customs.
That's why he brought it from the airport.
Otherwise, I trust you would have brought it from a butcher.
- Oh yeah, absolutely. - Okay.
Can you tell us what this is?
- Without looking at the label,
I think it's kind of a chopped up
intestines and innards
and
all together in a sheep stomach.
- So it's intestines wrapped in a sheep stomach.
- That's what I think it is anyway,
I may be wrong.
- Have you ever tried that before?
- A long time ago, a long time ago.
- And I know this is not Scottish,
but I've been begging Arran to bring me...
- It's British. - Yeah it's from the UK.
It's a Chocolate Orange and
I will show you because I've seen what they look like,
and they're super cool.
They actually break apart just like an orange.
Pretty cool.
Alright guys, so we actually need to cook this thing.
We're supposed to cook it in the oven
but we do not own an oven.
- Yet.
- Yet.
But apparently, you can also do it on the stove
by boiling it.
- Boiled haggis.
- Boiled sheep intestine. Oh that sounds lovely.
Alright, so let's get cooking.
Okay. Let's get this haggis cooking.
So this one, again guys, remember
this one comes from the airport
so it's probably not the best anyways.
This one comes in a tin.
I assume the other ones don't.
Now, I've just realized we're gonna have a little problem.
In the UK they don't have the little thingy
where you just open it like that.
I don't know if we have a can opener.
Do we Arran?
- We must do, we must do.
- Well, let's try and open that up then.
- [Marine] Alright guys, so this is what haggis looks like.
Looks like... - [Arran] Isn't it beautiful?
Look at that.
- [Marine] Um. To me this looks like meat
wrapped in a condom.
Alright, well. - [Aaron] Not a very good
condom it has a little hole in it.
- [Marine] Alright, off we go.
Let's throw it in there for 35 minutes.
(metal guitar and drums)
- One thing that Inga (a friend), I think it was Inga, mentioned
was that
a lot of foods
will refer to themselves
in the first person on the packaging.
So for example, this says, "My delicious chocolate segments
are made with real orange oil!"
- Oh, I never realize that.
- I think she said it was a very common thing she saw,
she noticed when she was in England.
All the packages said like, "Eat me!"
Or, "I contain less than two percent fat! Me, me, me."
- So they make the actual food kinda speak.
- Yeah.
- Oh that's cool, I never realized that.
Alright, well the haggis is cooking
so now we gonna be drinking.
And it rhymes. Ho-ho-ho-ho-ho.
Let's see.
- Oh you're good, you're good.
- It can't be super fizzy if it's not...
- It's good, open it.
Go for it, go for it.
- Can you see, guys?
I think it...
Oh, it smells like medicine!
Smells like liquid Advil!
- Advil? - Advil.
Have you ever heard of that medicine?
- No.
- Ugh!
- Marine doesn't like fizzy drinks, so she says.
Definitely not gonna like this one.
Especially, drinks that...
- There's some candy that tastes like that as well.
So, that's what it looks like.
- How do you think that orange, surely isn't good for you.
- This is so not natural.
Oh, well. Cheers!
So guys, do you, well now that we're drinking
it's not alcoholic of course,
but if you want somebody to drink the whole drink,
you can say, "bottoms up!"
So the bottom of the glass is up, so you drink it all.
I don't think I can handle that.
- No, no. You won't handle that.
So, bottoms down.
- Bottoms down. (laughs)
Alright, let's try it.
(lighthearted music)
- I've already tried it.
- Oh this is very bad.
- I knew it.
- How do you describe that though?
- I've got no idea. I've got no idea.
It's a sparkling soft drink with sugar and sweetness.
So I guess, sugar and sweetness is what you're tasting.
- The ingredient, the mystery ingredient.
So of course guys, like Arran said,
I don't like fizzy drinks in general.
I gag every time I try to drink Coke.
So,
yeah.
I knew I wasn't going to like it.
But, for soda lovers what can you tell them about it, love?
- It's different to Coke.
- Yeah.
- Pepsi and Fanta.
- But, okay. For example it looks like Fanta.
How different is it from Fanta?
- Well, its not a fruity flavor is it?
- No it's not.
It's not fruity.
- That's it. - Yeah.
Well alright guys.
Well this is a Scottish drink, very popular in Scotland.
And if you ever have a chance to try it, go on.
If you have tried it, comment that down below.
Alright guys, the haggis is still cooking,
cause it's 35 minutes to go.
So, we are going to try the Chocolate Orange.
I feel like we should have it after,
like a little dessert but,
we can't wait can we?
- Irn Bru, haggis, Chocolate Orange.
- It just makes sense. - Yeah.
- Okay, so.
As you can see, I don't know if you guys can see.
There's a ball inside, that's the actual chocolate.
(folk music)
Okay, so Aaron can you tell me how we have to open this?
Cause you told me we don't just open it up, right?
- Well you can, but
supposedly you're meant to give them a little knock.
And that causes all the little orange segments to separate.
So when you open up the foil it all uncurls like a flower.
- Oh, that sounds lovely.
(Beethoven's 5th Symphony)
(knock)
- [Marine] Harder?
- [Arran] Yeah.
Do it both ways as well.
(knock)
Oh a bit too hard.
(knock)
That sounded good. That sounded good.
- [Marine] You think? It looks like it's started separating.
- [Arran] Okay.
- Alright, so I assume it's orange flavor?
- Yes.
You first.
Oh, I have the honors.
Chocolate Orange!
- Exactly what it says on the tin.
- But, it's a Chocolate Orange
but it's orange chocolate, isn't it?
- Mhm
- Oh that's so tricky.
Hm, it's quite good.
- It's a chocolate orange made from orange chocolate.
Which is what pretty much what you just said.
- This is the kind of orange
I wish the doctor would prescribe.
- Have you seen the little--
orange skin on the outside? - Oh the ridge of it.
There's a little pattern of an orange.
Skin.
I don't know, can you guys see that it's all...
it looks like the pulp.
- Why don't you wash it down with some nice orange Irn Bru?
- Oh no.
Alright well, let's go check on the haggis again.
- One more bit.
- Okay just one. For the road.
Alright guys, so the haggis is cooked.
So have a look at what it's like.
It just looks like a big meatball
- [Arran] Oh that looks delicious doesn't it?
I especially love that gray water.
- It's a bit stinky as well.
(slow rock music)
- [Marine] Man.
- [Arran] I'm sure it tastes better than it looks.
It must do, cause--
- [Marine] It must do.
Sheep stomach, that looks more like plastic to me
than a sheep stomach.
- It does, it does.
- I don't think that's, no that's not the real deal.
- This isn't the most traditional haggis.
- So guys, in case this is our last video
because we died because it's horrible,
there are more videos of me trying foods,
British foods, so I'll put a little cart up there
if you want to go watch it.
- It's fine,
it's just meat. - Let's do it, let's do it.
- Well, I think that's quite nice.
Oh, hot bit, hot bit.
- It's okay.
- It's like a kind of bready mince meat.
- It's just, it really doesn't look appetizing.
- No.
- When you know what it's like,
what is inside, it sounds disgusting.
Ooplah!
I mean, I'm not gonna eat that for every single meal,
but let's say I'm in a situation
where I'm forced to eat it because there's people around
I would do it.
- I think that's really nice.
- Well, if you guys know more Scottish foods or sweets
comment them down below, because I would love to try them.
But I need to know about them first.
So let me know what it is.
Alright, I think that's it for today.
- Well, I'm going to carry on eating.
- Well, you carry on eating I'll say goodbye.
- Okay so now, the next 10 minutes:
Aaron silently eating a haggis.
- Alright guys, so I really hope you enjoyed the video.
This was just a little fun video.
Hopefully there's a little bit of interesting vocab as well
in the lesson, well it's not a lesson
it's more like a vlog.
I can't believe he keeps eating that and drinking that.
- Well a bit of the Chocolate Orange is left so.
- Do you wanna use the Chocolate Orange to kind of
push everything.
- Yeah, I think that's what they do.
(laughs)
- Alright guys, well that's it for today.
Thank you so much for watching.
Don't forget to check my other videos that I mentioned.
Like the one where I try British sweets and that's it.
Thank you so much for watching,
and of course...
- Keep on learning. - keep on learning.
- Bye bye - Bye bye
(light music)

Alt-right demonstrators, Antifa clash at rally in Portland | Breaking News - Duration: 6:32.
PORTLAND, Ore. — Small scuffles broke out Saturday as police in Portland, Oregon, deployed "flash bang" devices and other means to disperse hundreds of right-wing and self-described anti-fascist protesters
There were arrests and some injuries, but it wasn't immediately clear how many. A reporter for The Oregonian/OregonLive was bloodied when he was struck by a projectile
Eder Campuzano said later on Twitter he was "okay." Demonstrators aligned with Patriot Prayer and an affiliated group, the Proud Boys, gathered around mid-day in a riverfront park
Hundreds of demonstrators faced them from across the street, holding banners and signs with opposition messages such as "Alt right scum not welcome in Portland
" Some chanted "Nazis go home." Officers stood in the middle of the four-lane boulevard, essentially forming a wall to keep the two sides separated
The counter-protesters were made up of a coalition of labor unions, immigrant rights advocates, democratic socialists and other groups
They included people dressed as clowns and a brass band blaring music. The rally organized by Patriot Prayer leader Joey Gibson was the third to roil Portland this summer
Two previous events ended in bloody fistfights and riots, and one counter-protester was sent to the hospital with a skull fracture
This time, Gibson changed the venue from a federal plaza outside U.S. District Court to a waterfront park so some of his Oregon supporters could carry concealed weapons as they demonstrate
Gibson disputed the group's classification by some as a hate group. "We're here to promote freedom and God
That's it," Gibson told Portland TV station KGW while walking with demonstrators
"Our country is getting soft." Protesters saw a significant police presence that included bomb-sniffing dogs and weapons screening checkpoints
In a statement, police said weapons may be seized if there is a violation of law and added that it is illegal in Portland to carry a loaded firearm in public unless a person has a valid Oregon concealed handgun license
Among the things police confiscated were long sticks and homemade shields. Just before 2 p
m., police in riot gear ordered people to leave an area downtown, saying demonstrators had thrown rocks and bottles at officers
"Get out of the street," police announced via loudspeaker. Gibson's insistence on bringing his supporters repeatedly to this liberal city has crystallized a debate about the limits of free speech in an era of stark political division
Patriot Prayer also has held rallies in many other cities around the U.S. West, including Berkeley, California, that have drawn violent reactions
But the Portland events have taken on outsized significance after a Patriot Prayer sympathizer was charged with fatally stabbing two men who came to the defense of two young black women — one in a hijab — whom the attacker was accused of harassing on a light-rail train in May 2017
A coalition of community organizations and a group representing more than 50 tribes warned of the potential for even greater violence than previous rallies if participants carry guns
It called on officials to denounce what it called "the racist and sexist violence of Patriot Prayer and Proud Boys" and protect the city
Gibson, who is running a long-shot campaign to unseat Democratic U.S. Sen. Maria Cantwell of Washington state, said in a live video on Facebook earlier this week that he won't stop bringing his followers to Portland until they can express their right-wing views without interference
Self-described anti-fascists — or "antifa" — have been organizing anonymously online to confront Patriot Prayer and the Proud Boys in the streets
Organizers say that while Patriot Prayer denies being a white supremacist group, it affiliates itself with known white supremacists, white nationalists and neo-Nazi gangs
"Patriot Prayer is continuing to commit violence in our city, and their events are becoming more and more violent," said Effie Baum of Pop Mob, a coalition of community groups organizing the counter-demonstration
"Leaving them a small group to attack in the streets is only going to allow them to perpetuate their violence
" Dueling protests a month ago ended with Portland police declaring a riot and arresting four people
A similar Patriot Prayer event on June 4 devolved into fistfights and assaults by both sides as police struggled to keep the groups apart

Breaking News ⭐ Meghan Markle to meet with her dad on solo US trip - Duration: 2:59.
MEGHAN Markle is planning to meet with her dad to heal their bitter family rift on a secret solo trip to America, according to reports
The Duchess of Sussex is said to be planning the visit home next month for an emotional reunion with 74-year-old Thomas Markle, who is said to be "delighted", The Sun reports
Meghan — who celebrated her 37th birthday over the weekend — was said to be "deeply embarrassed and hurt" that her dad recently referenced Diana
The Sunday Mirror reports that the former lighting director is "keeping two dates free at the end of the month" to meet his daughter
"The possibility of a reunion has been discussed and Meghan looks set to incorporate it into her trip," a source said
"The location and exact dates will be top secret for both their sakes. It is a very sensitive time for them, but the intent seems to be to heal the rift
" A former aide told The Sunday Times the couple are working to "get dad on board", adding it is simply "not a very elegant solution" to cut him off and ignore him
Palace aides have reportedly had three top-level crisis meetings about how to deal with her family, particularly her dad
Markle, who lives in Mexico, has previously said the royals were freezing him out of his daughter's life over his staged paparazzi pictures and controversial interview with Good Morning Britain
In that he hinted at Harry's alleged political views — saying the Prince thought Donald Trump should be "given a chance"
He even suggested his health was in peril, and that he wanted to reconnect with his daughter before his death
The pair's fraught relationship has barely been out of the headlines since debate raged over whether Thomas Markle would make it to Meghan and Harry's wedding
He dramatically announced he would not be attending due to poor health and has since been vocal about this concerns with the Royal Family and his place in it
