The reason why most people see EMPs as an imminent threat is the well-known Carrington
event, a solar storm that took place in 1859 and affected the entire planet.
The EMP ruined telegraph systems in the Northern hemisphere, and it holds the record for the
most severe geomagnetic storm in recorded history.
