3 Reasons the US Is Not Ready for the Next Pandemic | Heavy.com

Medical staff are sterilised before entering the isolation unit at a hospital in Bundibugyo, western Uganda, on August 17, 2018, where there is one suspected case of Ebola.

One hundred years after the Great Influenza pandemic of 1918, global health leadership stands at a crossroads.

The United States continues to expand its policy of isolationism at a time when international cooperation in health could not be more important.

The state of pandemic preparedness and the necessary steps for protecting the people throughout the world was the topic of The Scowcroft Institute for International Affairs' 2nd Annual White Paper.

As pandemic policy scholars, with two of us spending the majority of our career in the federal government, we believe that it is essential to prepare the country and the world for the next pandemic.

It is not a matter of if, but when, the next disease will sweep the world with deadly and costly consequences.

There are many topic areas that national leaders must address to create better preparedness and response capabilities, but we believe three are most urgent.

These include targeting the resistance to antimicrobial agents that has come about because of overuse and misuse of antibiotics; ensuring continuity of supply chains; and improving and strengthening leadership.

Overuse of a wonder drug.

Prior to Alexander Fleming's discovery of penicillin, even the smallest scratch could be deadly.

Its discovery, however, helped contribute to the perception that man had conquered disease, despite Fleming's warning that "the thoughtless person playing with penicillin treatment is morally responsible for the death of a man who succumbs to infection with the penicillin resistant organism." Now, 70 years later, society is quickly reaching the precipice of that reality.

The problem of antibiotic overuse and misuses is extensive.

In fact, in the United States, 80 percent of all antibiotic use occurs in the agricultural sector and the majority of this use is nontherapeutic, meaning it is not medically necessary.

Misuse of antibiotics also occurs frequently in the human health sector, however.

The Review on Antimicrobial Resistance estimated that if changes are not made, the world could witness 10 million deaths annually due to antimicrobial resistant infections.

To help prevent this public health threat from reaching that level of crisis with potential catastrophic implications, we recommend four actions.

First, an increase of investment needs to be made by the federal government and the private sector into research, development and production of new antimicrobials.

In 2014, WHO also called for greater investment in discovering new antimicrobials, but in the last 50 years, only one new class of antibiotics has been discovered.

Second, governments throughout the world need to create stronger internationally harmonized regulatory systems for agriculture production and veterinary use of antimicrobials.

For example, in the United States, antibiotics cannot be purchased without a prescription from either a medical doctor or a veterinarian (for the agricultural sector).

But many countries in the developing world have no oversight for animal or human use of antibiotics.

In some places, particularly African countries, many antibiotics can be purchased over the counter.

You may already have experienced the third recommendation, if your doctor has sent you home from an appointment without an antibiotic prescription because your illness was viral.

Health care providers and consumers need to decrease misuse and overuse of antimicrobials in human health by only prescribing antibiotics in cases of bacterial infection.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued guidelines for this, including recommendations for patients.

Last, governments throughout the world need to understand that fighting antimicrobial resistance requires a collaboration between animal health, human health and environmental health.

This idea, known as One Health, works to bring together researchers and professionals from these three areas to address disease-related challenges.

While these actions require monetary and time investments, they are essential.

Without taking these actions society may find itself in a post-antibiotic world.

This world, as former Director-General of the World Health Organization Margaret Chan explained in 2012, means "the end of modern medicine as we know it.

Things as common as strep throat or a child's scratched knee would once again kill.".

Will global supply chains collapse?.

Modern society is able to function and flourish in large part because of the global supply chains transporting parts, equipment and supplies with speed, efficiency and just-in-time delivery, which allows business to keep carrying costs low because they can order what they need and have it shipped quickly, or "just in time." Global supply chains, which consist of production specialization through comparative advantage, has enabled great economic development, but their just-in-time structure also leaves them exceedingly vulnerable.

Components of the critical medical infrastructure, such as components essential to running life support machines or insulin for diabetics, are always in transit.

This means that even a localized disease could deprive people of needed medical supplies.

For example, if an epidemic hits a town in Asia where N95 masks, which are used to protect people from hazardous substances, are manufactured, there may no longer be any N95 masks to be shipped to the United States or elsewhere.

The United States experienced supply chain breakdown when Hurricane Maria caused a disruption in the supply of small bag IV saline.

A manufacturer in Puerto Rico that produces nearly half of all the saline utilized in the U.S.

had to halt production because of the hurricane.

This interconnectedness of the global economy and the expansiveness of medical supply chains means that a disruption anywhere along the line could spell disaster worldwide.

To help prevent such a disaster, the federal government needs to understand the United States' critical supply chains.

The federal government and private sector should be aware of likely points of breakdown.

Once there is understanding, the U.S.

must implement new policies that enable private sector innovation to diversify production and transportation where possible.

Diversification of production and transportation means that there is not just one production source for critical supplies.

Thus, a disruption in one geographical location would not cripple the entire supply chain.

Centralized, involved leadership.

Diseases do not respect borders, and for this reason, pandemics are a global threat.

Therefore, the U.S.

Which book is your favorite: Photography * Crushing It * Plant Paradox - Duration: 8:10.

In this video I'm going to show you 3 books that I'm currently reading.

I'm going to tell you what they're about.

And I would be very interested what topic of the books interests you the most.

So please leave a comment telling me which topic is most interesting for you.

The first book I'm currently reading.

That is actually a book in paperback.

I usually read them on my ipad but this one I read like a real book.

Like they used to be.

It's a paperback book.

It's called "Photography for beginners".

I picked this book up on our trip through Germany.

I thought this book could actually make me better at creating videos.

Understanding the basic concepts of photography.

It has really good advice in the book for basic pictures.

Some very common knowledge that you don't have to think about.

You know by nature.

And other things are really good information.

For example one little thing I learned from this book is how to make objects stand out

from the background.

How to make the background go sharper or less sharp with the camera settings.

It is full with really nice illustrations and examples.

Really to the details.

The good thing is that it matches the camera I have, the Canon G7X.

That's my main camera for vlogging.

That's the first book I'm reading.

The second book I'm reading is "Crushing It" from Gary Vaynerchuk.

I'm reading this on my ipad.

This is how it looks on the ipad.

Crushing it from Gary Vaynerchuk.

It is about being an enterpreneur, creating your business, creating your influence.

How to use different social media platforms like instagram, youtube.

What their purpose is.

Mistakes to avoid.

And in the end it's all about pursuing your dreams and make your dreams come true.

I really enjoy that topic covered in the book "Crushing It".

Let me give you some cites quickly.

"If you're earning what you need to live the life you want and loving every day of it.

Then you're crushing it."

Another one: "If there's anything this book should teach you it's that the only thing

stopping you from achieving lasting career and life happiness is you."

It's full of that great knowledge.

Another one I really like: "I want the world to mourn me when I die, not just for being

a decent human being but for building something tremendous and predicting where the future

of business lay."

Gary Vaynerchuk he built 150 million dollar media company.

He's so genuine, such a great guy.

Definitely check Gary Vaynerchuk.

And here's one cite that in my opinion matches him very well: "I genuinely don't give a s.

what people think which allows me complete freedom to do and say what I want.

Number 2, I care immensely what everyone thinks and will spend an insane amount of time responding

to sceptics who take the time to tweet or comment their criticism.

To help them see where I'm coming from.

Number 3 which may be more important than number 1 or 2.

I always respect my audience."

That is the book "Crushing It".

My number 2.

The third book I just started reading yesterday is this one here.

The plant paradox.

And this is from MD Steven Gundry.

It's about nutrition.

It's about your diet.

what you should eat and what you should not eat.

I was always very interested in that topic.

It also goes back to what went wrong when human beings started eating stuff they haven't

eaten 10'000 years ago.

So he explains his opinion on why some foods are bad for human beings and others are not.

One idea for example I took from this book already.

As I said I just started yesterday and it's really an interesting book in my opinion.

And he's by the way a heart surgeon, a cardiologist and immunologist.

And he also has a youtube channel that you want to check out.

At the start of the book he basically explains that there are two kind of plants.

Plants are not just there to be eaten.

Plants also want to defend their offspring from animals and human beings.

And there's basically two kind of plants.

One kind of plant don't want you to eat their offspring, therefore poisons it, like for

example grains.

Are that kind of plants that actually poison the seed so that you get sick by eating it.

That's one kind of plant.

And the other kind of plant actually wants you to eat their offspring.

But only when it is protected and ready.

He says the second kind of plant that wants to be eaten, they want you to carry away their

offspring to another place, e.g. a new apple tree can grow in another place.

The apple tree doesn't want new apple trees to grow very close.

They want you to carry it away.

They have developed a system to tell you when they want you to eat it.

An apple will be green when you cannot eat it.

And was the case long ago before green apples were cultured that you can eat when they're

green.

Nature has those signals like when the apple is still green you can not yet eat it.

Then the apple when it's ready to be eaten it turns red.

And that's the time when the apple will be good for you.

And before there is also some - I call it poisonous stuff in it - that's not good for

you, or it will be sour, to signal the animal or human being that you should not eat it.

That's one thing the book starts off with.

As I said, I just started to read it.

I came to that book through Impact Theory - the youtube channel - where MD Gundry was

a guest and talked about the book.

What he says for example at the very start of the book is: "the more fruit I removed

from an individuals diet the healthier he or she became and the more his or her cholesterol

numbers and markers from kidney function improved.

The more I removed vegetables that have lots of seeds such as cucumbers and squash the

better my patients felt."

Because what he says is that plants that want to be eaten can also

be differentiated by the number of seeds they grow.

Plants with a lot of seeds e.g. grains.

Very interesting book in my opinion.

I don't say it's true or not true.

In the end it's just opinions and things you may consider when reading the book.

I'm definitely going to read it because I think he's very clear in explaining.

This is the book.

The Plant Paradox.

Very interesting.

Please leave a comment.

Which of the three topics of those three books would interest you the most.

And I may actually do a video about that book once I finished it.

The first one, photography for beginners.

Is that a topic that you're into.

The second one, how to grow your audience, how to crush it in business from Gary Vaynerchuk.

And the third one about diet.

The Plant Paradox.

Three interesting books.

Three totally different topics.

Also tell me what kind of books you are reading at the moment.

Please leave a like and subscribe to StorySpotlight.

See you in the next video.

GLITZ GLAM EyeSHADOW PALETTE | Tutorial - Duration: 8:19.

good morning today I'm doing a look using the glitz glam eyeshadow

palette Beauty glazed this is a really cheap eyeshadow palette that I got of

Amazon I'll link it down below really a really long time ago and I haven't used

it since that first impression that I did or only like you know a few shades

of it so I just wanted to do another tutorial using the whole palette let's

get started I've already prepped my eye with the essence camouflage full

coverage concealer in 0-5 ivory and then I set my eyes and the whole of my face

with the ben nye translucent powder in fair so this palette doesn't really have

a highlight color so I'm just going to use this elf baked highlighter and

blush and this is in rose gold I got that I really didn't like this when I

first got it and then I got the tip from a subscriber that if you scrape off the

first layer it's much easier to use and it is so now I can use it so thanks for

that tip I'm going to use a pencil brush assisted 230 luxe pencil from zoeva

I'm just gonna highlight my brow bone I'm also gonna highlight my inside

corner here I'm gonna go over that again but I'm just using this as a little bit

of a guideline as to where the highlight is gonna go now I'm going to go into the

rosy pink shade tap it off for that I am using a Mac two two four and I'm just

placing this all above my crease just back and forth and back and forth

sometimes circular motions to really blend that out

you can go quite high up and blend those two colors that highlight and this color

together and see I'm just going circle emotions and back and forth I'm also

going to take this underneath and most of this is going to get covered up so

don't worry about it also the going connecting to the outside corner so most

of this is going to be covered up but I just wanted a little bit of a transition

color underneath as well okay there we go now I'm going to take that it looks

kind of burgundy in the pan but it's more like a pink on the eye or dark kind

of pink reddish color and I'm going to put this all over my eyelid

just tapping that in I feel like that's the best way to avoid fallout there some

fallout in this palette so be careful

and then we're gonna blend out that edge later for now I'm also pressing this in

my lower lash line and then we extending it to a kind of cat eye here just a

little bit still need to blend it out so okay now going in with that same

color and the smaller blending brush this is the Mac 217 I'm just blending

out the edges here also underneath just so everything is nice and blended

okay and now I'm going to go in with that maroon shade just next to the shade

we just used with the same brush and I'm deepening up this corner and bringing it

up in my crease a little bit I just realized I have some lines going on

there so I'm just going to take a clean pencil brush and I'm really gonna

diffuse this here there we go lines are gone back to this shade just really

deepening up the crease and the outer corner I'm just gonna go back to that

shader brush this is the Mac 239 I'm not sure I said that I'm taking that same

color and I'm pressing it in on the outside corner only going halfway just

taking a clean blending brush this is the 221 luxe soft crease from zoeva

and I'm really blending all of that together and out into the skin and now

taking this brown shade again with the Mac 217

I'm just further deepening up that

outer corner but I'm not going to take it into the crease I'm really just doing the outer corner here now I'm going to

take a little bit of this essence get your glitter on a glitter primer and I'm

just taking this on a Bobbi Brown ultra fine liner brush and I'm putting this

underneath my lash line here and using this tiny Coastal Scents shading brush

I'm gonna go in with this goldish one more kind of silver goldfish or like

white goldish color and then placing this on the glitter primer okay got a

lot of it in my eye well maybe don't do that really just about a third of the

eye

there you go that's all I'm gonna do it's just a little highlight these pressed

letters are super super soft so you're actually better off using your fingers

however this is such a small space that I have to use a brush now I'm gonna go

back to that pencil brush that I used before and I'm just gonna spray some

essence glow to go illuminating setting spray on a surface and I'm wetting my

brush with that and going back into that elf highlighter and I'm just really

making that inner highlight up here a little more intense ja bertha my cat

is meowing because super hot and she hates it and I want to cool her down and

I make her fur wet but she or like lay a wet towel down so she can lie on it and

cool down but she hates water so much she's such a typical cat in that sense I

hope I never have to wash her it'll be very very terrible I'm just gonna tap

that out with my finger here so good line it's not as harsh and now just some

mascara the LOV guilt eyes fan effect mascara in waterproof this is a little

reminiscent of the cherry inspired look I did but just using this one palette

and I'm really happy with the result actually I really like it it's a lot but

like for going out or something it's it's very very nice and that's it that's

the look with the glitz and glam eye shadow palette done so I hope that you

liked this video if you did you can always leave me a thumbs up and you can

subscribe right here can also hit that notification about to be informed of

when my videos come out which is every Monday Tuesday Thursday and Friday at

7:30 p.m. Austrian time 1:30 p.m. Eastern Time
