[♪ INTRO]

When people talk about space, it's often

on scales so large they're almost incomprehensible:

Thousands of light-years. Hundreds of millions of years. Billions of galaxies.

But some of the universe's most beautiful sights are much more fleeting,

like planetary nebulas, glowing, colorful shells

of gas that only last for about 10,000 years or so.

And this week, a paper published in Nature Astronomy

reported the first one that appears to be inside out.

Despite the name, planetary nebulas have nothing to do with actual planets.

They got their name in the 1700s, when astronomers saw them

as smears of light in their telescopes, not single points like stars,

but disk-like objects that looked more like planets.

We've known they're not planets for a long time, but the name stuck.

Instead, planetary nebulas are a type of stellar remnant,

or what's left over after a star dies.

Stars like our Sun aren't massive enough to undergo a

supernova explosion, so their death throes are far less violent.

The outer layers of the star, or stellar envelope, are shed into

interstellar space, and the core collapses into a super dense white dwarf.

The electromagnetic radiation emitted from that core reacts with

the particles from the envelope and other matter in the area.

Sometimes those particles absorb the energy and reemit it

at other wavelengths, producing a rainbow of colors.

Other times, the photons of light emitted from the white dwarf are so energetic

they knock electrons off their parent atoms entirely, creating charged ions.

Normally, the stuff closer to the white dwarf is more ionized

than the stuff farther away, because it gets hit with the most radiation.

But this planetary nebula is the first one we've seen

that has it the other way around,

and astronomers think that's because the inner shell

is excited by shocks from what's known as a "born again" event.

Basically, the stellar remnant at the center,

imaginatively named IRAS 17514-1555,

underwent a sort of thermal pulse and its nuclear engine fired up again,

expanding the star from a white dwarf back into a red giant.

Yeah. It's an undead star.

This isn't the first "born again" event we've ever seen.

For example, there's also Sakurai's Object,

which was discovered back in 1996

in the area of the sky near the constellation Sagittarius.

But this is the first time we've seen one with an inside-out nebula,

and the researchers think it's happening as the star

in its center rapidly cools back down from its second shot at life,

whereas Sakurai's Object is still heating up.

In the past 4 decades, IRAS 17514's brightness has dropped by a factor of 10,000,

and in the process, it's been ejecting large amounts of

carbon-rich material at speeds faster than the nebula is expanding.

That creates a shockwave in the nebula, which heats up the material

just in front of it enough to ionize atoms that usually wouldn't be.

Meanwhile, less-ionized particles are left in its wake.

That leads to more highly-ionized material outside of the less-ionized stuff;

in other words, an inside-out nebula.

But besides being a totally unique object in the astronomy books,

this planetary nebula can teach us a lot.

For one, it's a missing piece of the story of how low-mass stars

turn into metal-rich white dwarfs surrounded by planetary nebulas.

And according to models, the star that became IRAS 17514

had a mass only 10% larger than our own Sun.

So we might be looking at what could happen

in our own solar system in billions of years.

We'll never know for certain, 'cause we'll all be dead by then,

but it's sometimes good just to know, you know?

In the meantime, there's another beautiful astronomical sight

you can catch this very weekend: The Perseid meteor shower.

It's caused by the comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle,

which last passed by Earth in 1992 on its way around the Sun.

The comet was actually discovered back in 1862,

by Lewis Swift and Horace Tuttle,

but since one orbit takes over a hundred years to complete,

we didn't have enough data to predict

when exactly it would come around again.

But each time Swift-Tuttle does, it leaves a trail of dust in Earth's orbit.

Every year, our planet crashes into that trail

and some of the tiny pieces of space debris rain down.

But they do not make it very far.

They strike the Earth's atmosphere at 59 kilometers per second

and get burned away pretty quickly, creating a meteor shower.

Meteor showers get their names from where they appear to come from in the sky.

We see Swift-Tuttle's remnants coming from the constellation Perseus,

so it gets the name the "Perseids."

The Earth has lots of regularly occurring meteor showers throughout the year.

But since this one happens in August,

when the evening weather is nicer, at least in the Northern Hemisphere,

the Perseids is one of the more popular.

This year, we entered Swift-Tuttle's dust trail back on July 17th,

and won't leave until August 24th,

but we'll be entering the densest area on August 12th.

So this weekend, you can expect to see about one meteor per minute.

Assuming you don't have any clouds raining on your parade,

you'll be able to see meteors streaking across

all parts of the sky in the Northern Hemisphere.

But they will be more visible in areas with less light pollution.

And lucky for all of us, one major source of light pollution, the Moon,

won't be visible, since it's a new moon on Saturday.

The Present Perfect Tense - British and American differences - Duration: 6:38.

Hello everyone.

I'm Vicki and I'm British.

And I'm Jay and I'm American.

And today we're looking at the present perfect and how we use it a little differently.

And we've got some help.

Yes.

Our good friend Jennifer from English with Jennifer is going to join us.

Jennifer's American, like me.

And she knows lots about the way Americans use this verb tense so this is going to be

really useful.

And fun!

The first thing to know is British and American English speakers both use the present perfect

in very similar ways.

Americans just use it a little less often.

In this video we're going to look at some situations where this frequency difference

is most noticeable.

I've lost twenty dollars.

Oh that's funny, I've just found twenty dollars.

Well then it's mine.

What was the serial number?

What?

In American and British English, we often use the present perfect to talk about past

actions that have relevance in the present.

So there's an important connection between the past and the present.

I've lost twenty dollars.

I've found twenty dollars.

These past actions have effects in the present.

That's why Jay and Vicki both use the present perfect here.

Sometimes past actions are very important in the present because they happened very

recently.

OK then.

Bye.

Oh.

Your mother's just called.

Oh what did she want?

She says you never call her.

'Just' indicates that Jay's mother called very recently.

We can use 'just' with the present perfect in American and British English, but there's

another possibility.

Hello.

Hi Jay, did you just call me?

Ah sorry, I just sat on my phone and it dialed your number.

Not to worry.

Bye.

Bye-bye.

In American and British English, we can also use 'just' with the simple past to talk

about recent events.

So what's the difference about the way American and British people use 'just'?

When we're giving news in British English we generally use the present perfect.

Oh, your mother's just called.

Oh, what did she want?

When we're giving news in American English, we often use the simple past.

Your sister just called.

Oh really?

What did she want?

So both these sentences are possible in both varieties.

It's just that we use the present perfect more frequently in British English.

Thirty-two, ninety, sixteen, fifty-one, eleven and the bonus ball, forty-eight.

I just won the lottery!

Really?

Yeah.

Oh.

I think that's my ticket.

I've just won the lottery!

OK, so that's how we use 'just'.

Let's look at how we use the present perfect with 'yet' and 'already'.

Oh hi.

Have you eaten yet?

Err, yes.

I've already eaten.

OK.

I'll make something for myself.

The words 'yet' and 'already' indicate a time up to now or until now.

That relation to the present time means we commonly use them with the present perfect.

That's true in both British and American English.

In American English, especially spoken English, you'll often hear us use these words with

the simple past, too.

I'm going outside to practice soccer.

Wait a sec.

Did you do your homework yet?

Yeah, I already did it.

OK.

In British English, these sentences would be unusual.

With 'yet' and 'already' we usually use the present perfect, not the simple past.

So when do Americans use the present perfect and when do they use the simple past?

In written English and when we're speaking carefully, we often use the present perfect

with 'yet' and 'already'.

But when we're speaking informally, we often use the simple past.

'Did you do it yet?'

sounds a little more informal than 'Have you done it yet?', especially if we use the less

careful pronunciation 'Didja do it yet?.

And there's something else.

My theory is 'Did you do it yet?' can sound just a little more urgent in American

English than 'Have you done it yet?'

I agree with that, Vicki.

Let's share one more example.

Did you do it yet?

What?

You know.

What?

Oh I forgot!

You didn't pay the electric bill!

Sorry.

And that's it.

Now you know how we both use the present perfect with 'just', 'yet' and 'already'.

If you enjoyed this video why not share it with a friend?

Boat Oil Change: How To Change the Oil on a Marine Diesel Engine | ⛵ Sailing Britaly ⛵ - Duration: 10:07.

Hello. in this video you and I are going to change the oil in a marine diesel

engine. This is a really easy job but it really prolongs the life of your engine

so it's a very worthwhile skill to learn. You don't need to pay somebody to do

this, you can easily do it yourself and here's how. First of all let me introduce

myself my name is Chris I'm one third of Sailing Britaly, along with my Italian

wife Rossella and our 'Britalian' baby Emma who's 7 months old. We're currently

living on board this boat while we refit her, so if you hear baby noises in

the background that's why. So, what tools and equipment

do you need to change the oil on your boat? Almost nothing!

You'll need your oil: you can find out the capacity of your engine so you know

how much oil to buy and the grade of oil that you need online quite easily, and

then go and buy your oil. Then you need a very small, very simple, very cheap hand-

pump like this. These are about twenty dollars you can buy them on Amazon or

Ebay and you'll find links in the description

below, really, really simple. It's tiny so it's very easy to stow on a boat. You see

very large and complicated versions of this but at the end of the day, you don't

need them, this is hand-operated it pretty much is impossible to break and

it takes up no room on your boat- so this in my mind is the best pump available to

do this job. You also need some empty containers to collect the old oil and

I'm just going to use empty water bottles. I need three of these because

our engine takes 4.1 liters of oil. I also recommend that you change your oil

filter every single time that you change the oil. They are only a few dollars and

you may as well have the cleanest oil possible while you're doing this job.

So let's get started. First of all you need to run the engine until the oil gets

nice and hot: the hotter it is the less viscous it gets and therefore the easier

it is to pump it out. I've just completed a job on this engine and I've been

running it at about 2,000 rpm to test it and when I completed that job the oil

was 55 degrees C it's now dropped down to 44 degrees C but that's fine that

will be nice and thin. All you need to do then is remove the oil dipstick which on

this boat is here and when you've got this out it's quite satisfying to do a

comparison between the old oil and the new, so at this stage if you get some

tissue paper and just put that old oil on it - a drip of it - then you can compare

that to the new oil later on in the job.

Then you just get the thin tube that comes with the pump and you stick it

down into the hole for the dipstick. It's quite easy to go too far down so you can

also roughly estimate the distance between the top of the dipstick holder

and the bottom of the sump and that's how far you want your tube to go down.

Then you get your empty container, pu the large hose into that, and then pump out your oil. I think you can see

how easy this is people who use the big massive versions of these pumps will

probably say "Oh it's too hard to use those little pumps" It's not! Look, two

fingers, that's all it takes.

Ok, that's 2 litres already so that is half the oil withdrawn in just very few

seconds. So I'll now switch bottles...

Ok, that's 4 litres, so we've nearly finished.

It's a good idea to have plenty of tissue paper at hand to mop up the excess. We've got an

old sleeping bag here that was on the boat when we bought it. This has already

been earmarked for the bin, so we're using it just to mop up any drips.

They are the dregs now we're sucking up the last few drops. You can at this point move the tube up and down inside

the sump to get the low spot and then it collects all the oil. Ok that's that!

There will be a few drips of oil left in the bottom of the sump but that's going

to get diluted with the four point something litres of all that I'm going

to add now so that's negligible. Before I fit this oil filter I'm just going to

make a note of the date...

...and then that reminds me when I replaced the oil. Now we need to get that old one

off, which would be very, very simple if people fitted them at the correct torque,

but usually you find that they're really very, very tight because people over

tighten them. Let's see what this one's like...

Yep, just like that! So, if you've got

a strap wrench you can put a strap wrench around the filter and unscrew it.

If you don't have a strap wrench you can use a screwdriver and a hammer and knock

into it and you can use that as a tool to unscrew it.

There we go, that's that started. Oil will come out of this so be prepared to catch that.

Then you get your new oil filter, you lubricate the o-ring with some oil...

It even tells you how much to tighten these on the oil filter so it says tighten 3/4

of a turn after gasket contacts base. We'll make sure this face here is clean too. You get

the new filter, screw it into position.

Okay it's just starting to touch there, so we want three-quarters of a turn from

here so, half a turn... this bit wants to end up just over there. That's it so it

doesn't need to be any tighter than that and it won't leak despite it not being

really, really tight. Then you remove the oil fill-cap and add the correct amount

of oil- in this case just over four liters.

I suggest that you add slightly less than the book amounts of oil and then

leave it a good 10 or 15 minutes to sit, reinsert the dipstick, remove it, and then

check your oil level. Okay I'm happy with that oil level there, you don't want too

much oil: if you do overfill it by accident then you can use the same process we used

to remove the dirty oil to remove the excess clean oil, and then you get the

satisfying part here which is where you put your new oil next to the old oil...

There you go, before and after, now just think how much happier your engine's

going to be with that oil in there. Once you're happy with the oil level I

recommend that you run the engine and then turn it off let it sit for 15-20

minutes and then check it again just to be doubly sure. So that's how to change

the oil on your marine diesel engine. It's a reallysimple job, it doesn't cost a

lot of money, but you will definitely prolong the life of your engine by doing

this regularly. I do recommend that you wear barrier cream or gloves while are you

doing this and that will make cleaning up afterwards a lot easier. I hope you

Eminem vs Johnny Cash vs Deep Purple - The Way You Hurt (Letra e Tradução) - Mashup - Duration: 3:02.

I hurt myself today

To see if I still feel

I focus on the pain

The only thing that's real

The needle tears a hole

The old familiar sting

Try to kill it all away

But I remember everything

I wear this crown of thorns

Upon my liar's chair

Full of broken thoughts

I cannot repair

Beneath the stains of time

The feelings disappear

You are someone else

I am still right here

Aah I gotta hear you sing

I am still right here

I am still right here

You are someone else

You are someone else

You are someone else

I am still right here
