USA news on Youtube Jun 16 2018

Hi guys welcome back my the channel so recently I went on this really cool adventure

that inspired challenge and scared me so I'd very much like to share it with you!

One of the biggest surprises I've ever had came a while ago when Red Bull (The energy drink company)

emailed me and they said - Curtis would you like to fly out to Texas USA, watch the Red Bull Cliff diving

and present part of our show?

so of course I said

I'm on my way!

So I arrived at Heathrow airport and I kissed my worried mum goodbye

checked my flight time

Checked in at the flight desk

navigated through security

Had a cheeky muffin

I love muffins

Cracked open a Red Bull

I got a little bit distracted by this robot woman!

I've never seen one of those before

and then I found myself waiting

Finally it was time to check in and I boarded the plane!

When I reached the hotel I was tired from the all the travelling and anticipation for the next day

so I just went to sleep

The next day for breakfast I ate with a Texas shaped waffle which was very cool!

Day one was all about social media!

the next day I would be facing my biggest challenge yet - Television presenting

So we hit the road and we got to Possum Kingdom Lake!

I didn't have long to relax and look at the views because this wasn't a vacation this is serious

So Lina what's the plan?

The plan is to go to the diving platform and see if Curtis is afraid of heights

We have got a little bit of a walk ahead of us up to the diving platform

I'm guessing it's up this way?

look out for the snakes

is there actually snakes?

yeah rattle snakes! Oh no!

So the divers have to walk up this every time?

yes

do they wear shoes?

I have seen them without shoes

There is a snake!

I actually thought that was a snake!

We are at the top of the cliff. The top diving platform is the men's and the women's is lower.

even this ladder looks scary!

Nearly got squashed!

are you sure this is safe?

No it isn't

It isn't really safe because nothing is safe here

Well I have signed a legal form

It's all covered!

coming from someone that hasn't watched cliff diving before

while I was standing at the top of that platform looking down I gained a whole new perspective on the sport

how awesome these divers must be to dive off these massive platforms

Just dealing with the impact of the water alone these divers must be so strong

they go from traveling 100 Km/h to 0 km/h in seconds

Just to demonstrate how dangerous this sport is imagine this watermelon is your head

After this I really think Red Bull enjoyed scaring me!

So I have to write a sign saying I need a job!

and that's actually true because if he doesn't get get a job he has to pay for himself

What you didn't tell me that?

Oh sorry I forgot that!

So now Robert had made me aware that I got to work finding a job as soon as I could

I need a job

Do you have a job for me?

You can ride back down with me?

I have to make some money somehow

You are hired!

What is my job title?

Passenger

Ok sounds good lets go!

But after being told that a passenger doesn't get paid I quit my job

and I was back looking for jobs

so what am I gonna be doing?

We are going to do a little bit of cliff diving today!

That still looks very high!

It's not so bad and put some speedos on!

It seems a lot higher now I'm back up here!

I don't know how they do off the massive platforms

yeah, that was awesome!

That was my first day experiencing the action but I was still aware the real challenge was tomorrow

since before I can remember there's only ever been one thing that has scared me

and that has to be public speaking

nothing else comes close

I think mostly the fear comes from the thought are being judged by other people

and that's a reason why I started my youtube channel as it's a way to express myself without being on stage

But I knew this is something I had to go out my comfort zone for and face head on

so before I knew it I was standing on top of a podium surrounded by hundreds of boats

the music had been turned down and everyone was waiting for me to introduce

the 2018 Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series

If that's not facing it head-on I don't know what is!

Hey guys my name's Curtis Tilbury and I'm excited to join you from Possum Kingdom lakes in the USA

and we are about to watch big a Red Bull Cliff Diving commence

I'm really excited because this is my first ever Red Bull Cliff Diving event I have attended

I'm also going to soak in all of the action as well as the sunshine as we don't get much of this in the UK

I got the chance to go up to one of the top diving platforms the other day

and I can't believe people dive off these things they're so high

I was just looking down and I was very scared

mum what did you think of me doing the Red Bull thing?

awesome!

Fantastic, I thought you did so well!

So how did you and dad watch it?

We watched it on the TV

Hang on we have incoming

It's my random nan!

brilliant!

right so Grandad

What did you think of me doing the Red Bull thing?

you will have to wait a minute

is it that hard?

yes!

do you need to write a script?

what have I got to say?

we will come back in about 10 minutes then

So Dad what did you think about my Red Bull appearance?

well I can only say one thing about it, you were

You're unbelievable

how good is that!

unbelievable

One hour later

No I can't think of anything, turn the camera off!

One eternity later

There's so many words in the English language. Mum is laughing in the corner!

superb!

Celebrate good times come on!

I wanted to make the most of it so I got on one of the party boats and did something else for TV

hey guys so as you can see I'm on a boat now with some amazing people they're

really enjoying their time watching the cliff diving aren't you?

So we would love to know where you guys are enjoying the cliff diving fom as well

maybe that's in a water cooling down from the Texan heat

maybe that's on another boat

or maybe you're just at home enjoying yourself

I've also seen Parks Bonifay on a jet ski so I'm going to see if I can catch a ride, let's go!

Thank you Red Bull Cliff Diving for inviting me out to Texas I had an absolutely amazing time

experiencing the event and meeting some amazing people

also thank you for the cool watch, I love it!

I really want to do more adventures like this one in the future

so if you did like this video make sure to give it a thumbs up

subscribe if you haven't already and I will see you in my next video bye

World Cup Begins Without The U.S. Men's Team - Duration: 14:04.

World Cup Begins Without The U.S. Men's Team

The United States is among the notable no-shows for the month-long World Cup tournament.

Its the first time since 1986 the U.S.

men havent qualified for their sports biggest event.

Soccer officials say they are moving on from criticism and controversy to get the mens national team back on track.

But some wonder whether theyre focusing on what really needs to be fixed — from improving coaching to broadening the appeal of the sport at the youth level — to put the American team back on the world stage.

Still stings.

Its been eight months since the disastrous match where Trinidad and Tobago beat the U.S., knocking the Americans out of the World Cup.

Nineteen-year-old Christian Pulisic, a star midfielder for the U.S., played that night.

He still laments hell be watching the World Cup rather than competing.

You know [its] sad, obviously, Pulisic said.

Wed like to do it [play in the tournament] but now were just working on developing this team and being ready to qualify for the next one..

Pulisic was part of this team that took the field two weeks ago in a Memorial Day friendly against a national team from Bolivia.

The game was in Chester, Pa.

and more than 11,000 fans were there.

So were top U.S.

Soccer officials, like Nico Romeijn.

As chief sport development officer, Romeijn oversees five departments in the Federation, including youth national teams and talent identification.

Asked whether missing this World Cup means theres a crisis in mens soccer, Romeijn said no, [thats] too strong..

Carrying on after criticism.

Not qualifying, of course, was a big disappointment. And Romeijn says it gave urgency to work already underway.

For instance, work on coaching education.

Its so important to improve the level of coaching all over the U.S., says Romeijn, adding not only when youre looking at the highest levels, but also when youre looking at grassroots.

Because its all connected to each other..

Romeijn says youth development continues as well, with recent signs of success.

The U.S.

made it to the quarterfinals last year at both the Under-17 and Under-20 World Cups.

U.S.

Soccer may be keeping calm and carrying on.

But it cant ignore the fractures in the mens national team that contributed to the qualifying debacle.

Fractures caused by coaching controversies and the harsh criticism that followed the Trinidad and Tobago upset.

The Federation has responded by adding new personnel.

Last week U.S.

Soccer hired former player Earnie Stewart as the first-ever general manager of the mens team.

In February, U.S.

Soccer elected a new president.

Hoping for a culture change.

Former national team player and current NBC soccer analyst Kyle Martino ran for president of U.S.

Soccer, but lost.

Still, Martino continues to share his campaign calls for reform.

Starting with the U.S. Soccer culture.

Theres a culture of patronage, says Martino.

Its become incredibly insular [with] a handful of people that dont have the technical qualifications or the history as a player to grow the game and create macro architecture that can help not only develop players but improve the quality of experience within the sport..

[U.S.

Soccer] hasnt become the meritocracy it should be, Martino continues, where the qualified people who are in it for the right reasons rise to positions where they have the authority to, in a democratic way, make great decisions for soccer in this country..

Despite his criticism, Martino says hes rooting for new U.S.

Soccer President Carlos Cordeiro.

I hope he does a great job, says Martino.

I hope [he pushes] the reform thats necessary to change the culture within U.S.

Soccer and bring this game to a larger amount of people whove found it hard to either participate or stay in the U.S.

Soccer family for a long time..

Casting a wider net.

Martinos particularly passionate about the idea of spreading the game.

As the new board chairman of Street Soccer USA, a non-profit working to grow the game in inner city communities, Martino wants U.S.

Soccer to cast a wider net at the youth levels of the sport – as part of a broader search for the next generation of national team players.

Its the most diverse and non-discriminatory game in the planet.

And in our country its a rich kids game.

Kyle Martino.

You have to create the architecture so that its inclusive, he says.

This is a blue collar sport everywhere else in the world.

The teams that win World Cups, that list is made up of kids from favelas in Brazil and the streets of Buenos Aires.

Thats where the game lives.

Its the most diverse and non-discriminatory game in the planet.

And in our country its a rich kids game.

Fixing that absolutely will improve our national team..

A hopeful glimpse of the future.

At the game in Chester, fans were happy for a night.

The U.S.

beat Bolivia and two 18-year-olds were stars.

Josh Sargent and Tim Weah both scored.

Sargent made his national team debut.

I was very nervous to be honest, Sargent said.

It was my first professional game ever, so it was a pretty big deal to me and I was proud to net one..

After Pennsylvania, the U.S.

went overseas and lost to Ireland and then tied World Cup-bound France.

The friendlies perhaps offered a hopeful glimpse of the future.

Now that the 2026 World Cup is coming to North America, qualifying for that event, at least, may not be an issue since theres a good chance the U.S.

will automatically qualify since its the principal host.

But new Federation President Carlos Cordeiro has the kind of big plans that might help the U.S.

avoid other World Cup qualifying embarrassments for years to come.

We believe this event [the 2026 World Cup] will become a lightning rod, Cordeiro said Wednesday, after the U.S., Canada and Mexico won the bid.

It will become transformational for the sport as kids thatre now 8, 10, 12 years old can all dream of potentially playing for a national team..

I make the argument, Cordeiro continued, that we are a vast, powerful, wealthy nation, but we have haves and have-nots.

And our disenfranchised are underserved, and in many ways these are the people with whom the sport resonates most.

We dont have enough of them – at 3.5, 4 million registered kids [in U.S.

Soccer], we believe there are many, many more who could be playing with us..

Its a message of inclusion that should give hope to critics — that with the right people making the right decisions, the U.S.

finally can realize its potential in mens soccer.

Competing In The Alternate World Cup Is A Dream Come True For Tibet - Duration: 9:18.

Competing In The Alternate World Cup Is A Dream Come True For Tibet

The first time he touched a football, Gelek Wangchuk was 9 years old.

It was in a settlement of Tibetan refugees in Himachal Pradesh, in northern India, where he and other Tibetan boys attended the Tibetan Childrens Village, a school founded by the Dalai Lama, the Tibetan spiritual leader.

I didnt know how to play, I didnt have any [football] kit.

But I had a lot of interest, said Wangchuk, now 26.

I started playing football only for enjoyment without any shoes..

Wangchuk became good — so good that he is now a midfielder on the Tibetan national team representing his country at the Confederation of Independent Football Associations (CONIFA) World Cup.

The ten-day tournament in London brings together 16 teams from nations, minorities and regions not part of FIFA to compete in an alternative World Cup.

The competitors include the Romani people, the North American region of Cascadia, Matabeleland, Panjab and United Koreans in Japan.

CONIFAs constitution states that members are eligible to join if they are football outsiders [overlooked] by FIFA or left behind by their mother country.

New members are voted in by existing CONIFA members.

Since 1950, Tibet has been ruled by China, and many Tibetans have fled to other countries for a better life and more opportunities.

Its national team consists of 22 young men with Tibetan roots, now living in Nepal, India, Canada, the United States and France, all playing football in the name of their ancestral homeland.

Players are recruited on the basis of their performance in the Tibetan settlement tournament, held in India every year.

It is Tibets first ever CONIFA World Cup game since the tournament started in 2014, and the teams first trip to England.

The green spaces and parks in London remind Wangchuk of Tibet, where as a boy he shepherded sheep and cows in the pastures.

It is a dream to play for the national team. the midfielder says.

Football is the game that can make your country proud, whether you win or lose.

I feel proud to play for my nation..

Wangchuk has never been back to Tibet since escaping on his mothers advice in the middle of the night, 17 years ago.

She had said to him that in India, he would have more opportunities to study and work.

If he remained in Tibet, she told him, he would have no education and have to do construction work.

He trekked two months through the snow-covered Himalayas, accompanied by strangers.

A month ago, Wangchuk was able to get in touch with a family member, his sister, for the first time since he left, using the Chinese messaging app WeChat.

She told him that their mother had died.

He said that they are not able to talk about politics, the Tibetan situation or even Indian society, because the Chinese government will know. But he did tell his family he would be playing on the national team.

His sister cried of happiness.

Passang Dorjee, the executive secretary for the Tibetan National Sports Association (TNSA) — which the football team is part of — said the organization was the brainchild of the Dalai Lamas younger sister, Kasur Jetsun Pema.

She thought this association was very important for Tibetans in exile and especially for the young people, Dorjee says.

It was a great way to show our country to the world..

The players arent professional footballers and seldom have the chance to play together.

Most are full-time students.

For this tournament, the team only had the chance to train together in London just nine days before the start of the event.

Their football kit was sponsored by COPA, an athletic clothing company; the flights and other expenses were paid for by the Tibetan Central Administration and public donations.

Dorjee said his predecessor tried to enlist the team into FIFA but was told that it did not meet eligibility rules, since Tibet is not recognized as a country but rather an autonomous region of China.

He said it is disappointing for countries like Tibet not to be able to compete in the FIFA World Cup, but that he is very grateful to CONIFA for giving them such an opportunity.

We might not have freedom, but we are one country, he says, sitting in lotus position on the sides of the football pitch.

The chance to play is especially rewarding, given the fact that the team had trouble securing a visa.

While the average wait time for a UK visa is up to two weeks, some team members waited 45 days.

We didnt know if we would make it or not, says Pema Lhundup, the 21-year-old striker.

I feel like there was a lot of pressure on England from the Chinese government..

But now in London the team has broken records — attendance records.

Playing against Northern Cyprus at the Enfield Town stadium, the Tibetan team was cheered by 1,200 spectators – the biggest crowd ever at the venue.

And while they lost 3-1, the players were not discouraged.

We feel really glad to represent our country through sport, here in the Mecca of football, Lhundup says.

Before flying in for the tournament, the team received an audience with the Dalai Lama, who gave them his blessing and told them to be Tibetans and to show compassion even on the field.

Says Dawa Tashi, the 30-year-old defender: It was one of the happiest moments of my life.
