MANIKA: We are truly a STEM focused organization.
And we really wanted to open our doors
and show that to you today.
[MUSIC PLAYING]
NATALIA: How old were you when you knew you loved math?
KATHY: I recall first knowing I loved math in the third grade,
so it must have been around age eight or nine years old.
And it was really around learning multiplication tables.
Something about that challenge, and I
wanted to be the first in my class of mastering that.
ELIZABETH: Why did you choose a career in math?
KATHY: One thing that helped with that
was that I had a math teacher, a middle school math
teacher in seventh grade, which is where you guys are now.
She really inspired me, just in terms
of what was a possibility.
NATALIA: What advice do you have for me to pursue a STEM career?
KATHY: Take those challenging math and science classes.
If you gain and learn math and science really well,
it really opens doors to just about anything
that you want to do in the future.
ELIZABETH: Did you ever feel discouraged?
And what inspired you to keep on going on?
KATHY: Oh, yes, absolutely.
Everyone feels discouraged from time to time, whether it's
someone kind of giving you a hard time
and implying you can't do something,
or you get a bad test grade or something like that.
But what inspired me was that I knew I was capable of more.
Let's say if it was a bad test grade,
I knew that if I really was honest with myself,
if I would have worked a little bit harder,
I probably would have done better.
Right?
And if someone kind of doubted my ability to do something,
I like to prove them wrong.
You can do absolutely anything you want to do.
