>> I'm Kate T. Parker.
I'm a photographer, and I have a book called Strong is the New Pretty,
all about giving girls that power to be themselves
and to be confident and trying to just show girls
in that way through photography.
I'm here today, we're shooting for the Girl Scouts,
and I think combining the Girl Scouts and showing girls
in a strong, confident, powerful way, I mean,
that's kind of like there's no question that's
who the Girl Scouts are, so I think it's this great, like,
melding of two things, and the girls have been amazing
and they're strong and they are confident,
and it's really just kind of letting them do their thing
and staying back and capturing it.
>> It's a really cool experience because we get to do something
that most kids our age don't get a chance to do.
>> I love showing girls
as the strong confident people that they are.
I'm a mom of two girls and I felt like the images that we saw
in the media reflected back
to us did not show girls in that way.
They didn't look like my girls, and so I wanted,
as a photographer, I wanted to show my girls
that who they were was enough, that them being fierce and angry
and full of energy and not necessarily spotting
for the camera was okay, and it was more than okay.
I wanted to celebrate it.
So that was -- that's really was the genesis of my project,
Strong is the New Pretty and it's just kind of expanded
from really just small for my girls to girls all
over the country and all kinds of girls.
>> This book focuses on the inner beauty, and you can --
as a girl, you can be anything you want to be,
you can do anything you want to be,
and you're beautiful no matter what you are.
>> So when I was younger, I was a Brownie,
and I think all those experiences of, you know,
trying to be entrepreneurial and the leadership things
that you learn, they all shape you, especially as a young girl,
but to show that you are capable,
that you can do anything, that you can be in charge,
I think it's amazing, and I think especially when it's
in your formative years, it's huge.
It's great for our girls to have those skills and especially,
you know, to carry them forward in their life.
