One of Japan's most beautiful signature items

the kimono

As lights come on at night and curtains are lifted

performers wearing sumptuous kimonos of vibrant colors or flower patterns

paired with elaborated hairstyle and makeup

performs orginal and unique century –old stories of Japan.

We are at Shochiku Costumes

a renowned kimono and Kabuki costume company in Osaka

many of Japan's film industry costumes and props are from this company

Is this luxurious and familiar looking kimono

going to be my next challenge?

Do I look a little not at ease?

That's because the kimono I'm wearing weighs 20 kg!

Hyesoo is wearing a luxurious hand sewn kimono

made with only natural dyes

The actor who plays the princess in a Kabuki performance

wears this kimono

It's really exciting to wear

such a precious kimono that can only be seen in museums!

But I'm also a bit worried

I don't think I can eat anything(in this kimono)

Did you know

it takes at least 1 hour to put on a formal kimono

even with help from other people!

can you dance in this ? is it possible?

Finally, set the kimono in place with a lavish sash

and we're done dressing…?

I forget there would be a ribbon on the back !

it's actually a huge ribbon!

A sewing machine was not used at all

For the embroidery, every stitch was made by hand

The embroidery takes one person 6 months to finish

Together in Tokyo and Osaka , about 100 people do needlework

and we outsource to an additional 100 people for sewing

With the kimono wrapped so tightly on you

, walking is not so easy anymore!

now there will be a little surprise!

OneTwo

Three!

This is a not-to-be-missed feature in kabuki performances!

To speed up changing costumes during a performance

staff members stitch the red outer garment by hand when the actor puts it on

which makes it possible to quickly change costumes between acts

This kimono is for princess that lives in a castle.

The embroidery is elaborate and fine. It's for theater performance

I mentioned about using the "thread-up" technique

that's to create a better stage effect

you can add another piece, the most, it will puff up

this exquisite kimono to be worn inside

costs 3000000 Japanese Yen!
